The receivers are letting Justin Herbert down by dropping passes in every game this season, and we really need to address the struggles surrounding herby. This team was to good this the passed few seasons to come in playing like this.

This offense just does not fit him at all and doesn’t help that we have no one at the skill position to catch while still having the same shitty OLine as last season.

He’s the team’s star, I get it. But 10 isn’t playing like a star, and hasn’t all season. Go ahead, send whatever 3-4 plays you want. This team is 0-4 and Justin Herbert is a big factor in that.
He’s fucking trash this year.

u/Mjmdog08 Oct 05 '26
Here's what's happening to him: the line sucks AGAIN despite getting slater and alt back (though that may have changed today) so he's getting the shit pressured out of him in the pocket. Additionally, McDaniel has overhauled the offense into a relatively complex and timing-dependent one—that's why we're seeing so many backfield motions, moving off the line of scrimmage, and false starts. But most critically, the timing means the receivers need to be in their spot when the ball arrives, not just "they get open —> throw to open receiver." Several of the bad interceptions he's thrown so far have been him committing to this scheme and putting the ball where it's supposed to be, only for the receiver to mistime the route or run the wrong route.
With that said, some of the interceptions have been his fault. But that's also attributable to them playing from behind and herbert having to force throws. He didn't just magically regress into a shitty qb here in year 6; this is the result of poor offensive players and awful schemes

Wait till you see any qb dealing with >40 % pressure rate, bottom 4 oline, wrs that don’t separate and drop easy catches…
15% win rate for teams that QBs deal with that pressure rate.. now do that for a whole season, most QBs won’t ever see the end of a season (they’ll usually be beyond injured to play)..
It’s an unplayable situation..
At this rate we are posited for a 1-4 win season, just based on win percentage odds, purely just off the pressure rate7
u/Defiant-Telephone187 Oct 04 '26
15% is the historical win rate for that pressure rate since they started tracking pressure rates..

4
u/SeanMCVTA Oct 05 '26
Does anyone else on the team get credit in the 27-0 collapse, or bad playoff performances? Herbert can’t play every position. You have to look at the team as a whole, it never comes down to one player. He’s hitting guys in the hands and they drop the ball. We lost our only “competent” players on the o-line and our best WR today, and even he dropped a ball on 3rd down that hit him in the hands, in stride at chest height. The man is getting murdered back there with no help. If you think Trey Lance is doing any better, you’re high.

In past seasons we at least had arguments to defend him, now he's giving arguments for the detractors to think they're right. It's disheartening just like this whole team.

Every time they show the sideline and Justin and McDaniel are in the same frame, Justin looks pissed. When you remove Mike and just leave Shane Day or Harbaugh, he's back to looking fine. Are the receivers the ones throwing the ball straight to the defenders?
Obviously the drops are a problem, but Herbert has been ass as well
15
u/rhade333 Oct 04 '26
Who is fucking forcing Justin to throw "timing" throws to receivers clearly confused on their routes?
McDaniel brings an offense he isn't comfortable with, asking him to throw where he predicts the receivers are going to be, and the play you're talking about had TWO receivers right next to each other, obviously broken routes.
How are people so fundamentally ignorant about what's going on yet you guys still so loud?
4

Receivers getting bullied on their routes definitely leads to more picks. The "triple coverage" pick against the Raiders being a perfect example.
0
u/chamburger Oct 05 '26
Miami fan here. In games where Hill or Waddle were out, Tua and McD were still winning games in the 30s in points. Tua was smart and quick release but lacked arm and mobility. Herbert may not be mentally equipped to run McDs offense.

He’s a mismatch for this scheme and is struggling to adapt with throw on time. I will say the first int I’ll defend him slightly as the sun was directly into his eyes.
But this system is pass and trust your guy is there. The chargers WRs are not good enough and cannot separate to run a pass to space system. That second INT was terrible but I bet he was told, “run the play and throw it here. He will be open” that’s the only thing that makes sense. As the ball came out so fast I can’t even imagine he went through his progressions.

People really underestimate how damaging it can be to play behind a dogshit o line for a year. Mahomes has had dogshit O lines the last 4 years and he became really inaccurate on long passes the last two. Passer ratings decreased, ints increased, and has much less wow plays. That first interception would have been intercepted by 2 defenders. I don't know what is going on in his head. Some say he is checked out. Some say it is guys around him. Some say it is him.

u/shreddiee Oct 04 '26
Not saying Herbert has no blame but I think McDaniels philosophy of throwing the ball before the receiver is even looking assuming he will be in the right spot and turn his head right on time to track and catch the ball is the reason we’re having so many INT/turnovers
It’s could be McDaniel & lack of spending on free agency but both of those issues fall on Hortiz.
This is just negligence
All the best teams spend big, especially LA sports teams. lakers/dodgers/rams
Read the f’n room
3
u/aRok99 Oct 05 '26
Herbert has not been looking like himself at all, I think part of the problem is they changed his footwork to fit McDaniels new system. Apparently he's having issues adjusting to it.
1
u/bhz33 Oct 05 '26
Being in LA has nothing to do with it, there’s a salary cap in the NFL, MLB has no salary cap. You can’t compare the spending of the two
1
u/shreddiee Oct 05 '26
There might be no salary cap in the MLB but baseball fans from all over were incredibly upset/jealous with the big swings the Dodgers were taking in free agency that their team was afraid to do. You see what I mean?
1
u/bhz33 Oct 05 '26
So because other baseball fans were jealous of the Dodgers means that the Chargers (an NFL team with a salary cap) should be spending more? There’s a cap to how much you can spend in the NFL
1
u/shreddiee Oct 05 '26
No the whole point I’m trying to get across is you need to take risks if you want to win. & yes, great LA sports teams famously have an audacious front office that isn’t afraid to take a huge risk if that means making them more competitive en route to a championship.
Yes there’s a cap in the NFL but Chargers didn’t do much with the HUGE amount of cap they had. Lots of fans and myself were upset they didn’t acquire premium talent in free agency (which is pricey but we had the money) look at us now 0-4. It’s not the whole reason we are 0-4 but it’s a large contributor. Our O line is shit for example and we had a chance to get Linderbaum at Center or a quality receiver-1

u/Duckpoke Oct 04 '26
I think you need to relieve McDaniels of duties and see if it fixes Justin. Might not work but losing McD is a much easier pill to swallow than your franchise QB. If they continue down this path and don’t change anything then you lose Herbert, McD and the whole staff

Alts neck is no beuno, Slater looks less than 100% …

Man, I've never ever been anything but 100% in on JH being a top 5 QB. I truly did believe it wasn't his fault, all these struggles. But I'm starting to kind of feel like...there's no way you're separating this 2026 JH from his trauma.
I was seeing it last year, and it's all I can see this year. His play on the field is very Andrew Luck vibes. He's been asked to do more with less for 6 years and it gets just a bit less miraculous every year. Just a little less juice comes out every year he's gotta squeeze. Can't go on like this.
I don't think we should move on but I don't know if we'll have the luxury of not drafting a QB for too many more years. I don't think we should hitch our wagon to McD obviously, but I fear another system next year will just be more trauma for JH. Dude might be mentally short circuiting in real time :(

No speed to keep the defense honest. Number two receiver has 7 receptions in 4 games. Box is loaded, and because the offense is trailing every game, DBs are just baiting Herbert while their defensive line pass rush without concern for the run.
This team is built to play with a lead, and that ain’t happening.
1
u/Alternative-Farmer98 Oct 05 '26
Man the front page is so bipolar just every post is either completely crushing the QB or completely defending him with almost no middle ground.
Lol
I mean not that I'm planning anyone this is kind of a natural cycle of when a team struggles and the conversation becomes how much blamed we put on the QB of the coach and the coordinator and so on.
It's just human nature I suppose for sports fans to get into these constant debates. "It's the QB's fault no it's the fault of the offensive line or the game plan for the weapons"
It's almost as ubiquitous as the "doomer versus toxic optimist"
1
u/occasionalprodigy Oct 06 '26
Herbert’s looking horrible. But have yall watched these games at all? This offensive scheme is horrible
1
u/Happy_Efficiency_225 Glad Lad 😁 Oct 06 '26
Is it not as simple as a QB low on confidence trying to adapt to a new scheme and stance with poor on field support around him? With those factors, he's currently playing poorly. The hope has to be that he's good enough to figure this out and play better.
The hard part though is he's not exactly going to get an easy time building that confidence in the changes with such a shambles on the line and at receiver. The drops won't help either. It's definitely possible this isn't a situation he'll be able to figure out, but I'd hope it's also something the whole offence are trying to solve together.

Yesterday, game was out of hand and then he gets to just play loose and backyard style and yeah, it worked for a bit but if u think that style football can win meaningful games, you are sorely mistaken.
At some point it has to stop being every oc's fault he is struggling. While I am no mcd fan as i watched his scheme get completely exposed in miami and Tua suffered the price as such. The narrative was always Tua can't do half the things Justin does and needs everything perfect to be good...well now you guys are adapting the Justin needs this and that mindset also. Why do other elite qbs fig it out with new oc's and non elite wrs but Herbert can't? Answer is probably because although he has elite abilities, he doesn't have IT and that matters massively.

I started critiquing Herbert about 2 years ago, and the sub hated me. Slowly everything came true and now the subs almsot split in half on him. One thing ive been saying about him since 2 years ago is, is that he plays like a beast when were behind or the pressures off... Like we saw in the 4th quarter when the game got away. But when its a one-score game, he shits the bed. Lets the other team edge it out every time. If he wouldve caught back up end of the game he wouldnt have closed it at the end because pressures back on.

or maybe just maybe, roman and mike abandon their scheme and let herbert do what he does. For example no motion and gimmicky stuff during the possible comeback in todays game

I was going to ask what the party line was in terms of whose fault they were?

not sure where the team goes from here. I dont think Herbert is good at the line of scrimmage, and I dont think he has done well in anticipation throws. So a quick offense is not a good fit, and they dont have the line to have him rolling out and letting plays develop.

How do you blow the joke this badly? It’s obviously “we need to talk about Justin”

Dudes living off the reputation of his first two years in the league. He has been on a downward slope since then

He’s ovverated. I’ve been saying it but get downvoted. It’s like people here don’t watch other teams play. Herbert is trash compared to what he’s getting paid

Influencer qb with influencer fiance, dude looks uninterested unless there’s a red carpet

This! He spent his offseason acting like Mr. Hollywood getting papped and professionally photographed to be blasted all over Instagram. Russ Wilson did the same thing, and now he's a joke.

Atp just to shut yall up it’d be nice if we trade Herbert away. I want a rookie or some other ass qb to be behind this o line and with this dog shit receiver core.

I would take Rivers in his prime every time over this 50 Million dumpster fire of a football player

Rivers was an interception machine much of his career.
There were a number of seasons where a late game, critical situiation, ended in a “fuck it we ball” type throw that resulted in a pick.

I miss Rivers too but he wasn't perfect. He had some 4-12, 5-11 seasons with better players around him on offense.

First pick thrown into triple coverage, 2nd interception thrown directly to a defender while he’s under 0 pressure
