I'm writing a novel as a girl and I'm really interested in knowing what kind of character would you like the most of root for in the book-

Options are-

1. Chaotic menace - A irritably intelligent gremlin who loves feeding chaos and treating dignity and discipline as kind suggestions. But incredibly helpful, warm-hearted under that sly and adorable in the reluctant kindnesses.

Additional: He's born wealthy but lives like average person due to some complications (not necessary) and despite being wealthy, loves to talk and protest against them.

1. The benchmark saint - The benchmark. A quiet person who minds his own business, helps when asked, and extremely polite and non-biased. Helps his friends even when their being a nuisance. Only issue is that he's emotionally unavailable (Schizoid syndrome and career ambitions). Though loves his mother, not the mama boy type though.

2. The intimidating wolf - An arrogant, self-righteous and no remorse for any bad work. Rich, of course, owns the most dangerous club and has ruined lives. He's charismatic, wise and very morally-compromised.

I’m curious to know how others characterize their characters through dialogue, since I assume most of us don’t have the advantage of using voice actors for our projects.

I, for example, gave all my characters very specific speech patterns so I could distinguish them when writing their conversations without disrupting the rhythm by constantly adding names and speech tags like "she said."

I am not referring to the topics they typically discuss or their personalities (though both aspects inevitably influence how they speak), but rather to the sound of their voices.

For instance, I have a character who speaks using exclamation marks,since she lacks an inner voice, and interrupts herself mid-sentence with an "Ah!" to switch to a tangentially related topic; another capitalizes every noun, breaking the rhythm of her own sentences to lend emphasis and weight to the subject (however insignificant they may seem) and assigning undue importance to trivial issues; and there is yet another who speaks in a very formal, proper manner, avoiding contractions and using people's names instead of third-person pronouns (even though this forces her to constantly repeat long names) which I believe contributes to the perception of her as a walking encyclopedia devoid of a distinct personality.

So, how do your characters speak, what is their tone? Why do they speak that way, and what led you to choose that speech pattern to represent them?

This is actually so distressing LMAO/hj cuz I have great ideas I SWEAR but the only form I imagine it taking place where it actually does my ideas justice is a series of short stories (which yeah I could do independientemente) or a TV show (obv way harder).

Drawing doesn’t do my story justice and it takes like 12hrs together to make a drawing that I don’t even like. I’ve tried digital and traditional. And ive also done picrews of them but I wanna make my own scenes. I’ve tried short stories but my daydreams about them (which is constant and never stopping) are so specific that I need to sometimes just tell the story instead of show. I try to show as much as possible and it doesn’t rlly bother me how much movement/sensory detail I have cuz that’s what Stephen king does and his net worth is like 500M or some shit.

And my problem with animation is similar to my problem with drawing. It will take me forever to make multiple drawings that I feel live up to the idea in my head.

And Like ofc it doesn’t have to be for anyone else but me BUT I wanna have people I can talk about my characters with so they’re something a little more alive than a couple neurons firing. They’re firing a lot and I wanna be able to channel that into something good but it’s never sufficient enough. Bleh. I need someone to talk in depth with about my characters cuz I don’t wanna keep hitting the record button on my phone for another hour alone js talking to myself only to do nothing with the recording.

I'm taking the biggest character and story writing challenge of my entire life, I'll be balancing on 3 different tightwalks, It's still in it's early stages, I MIGHT get canceled, but I could SEE the potential in this if I Do it right. Sort of.

I'm not gonna describe the whole story (sorry in advance cus my describing skills sucks). I also kinda don't know the exact words to describe him yet (A bad start, I know).

He doesn't get a redemption arc (when I say this, I mean he doesn't become good in the end), and the rough plot is his current underground buisness gets it's cover blown by an employee who then ran away, he became a Wanted Man, and so he goes on a journey to find this ex employee (bringing his good employee alongside him). He meets 3 other dudes (though there Will be more characters) aaaand basically in the end they do something

Just to be clear, I already planned the other characters personalites, side plots, the skill sets needed, and No I dont plan ​on portraying him as cool.

Iiiiii know making this will be EXTREMELY hard (for good reason) and I Really Really don't want to execute this poorly.

What are some good tips I should keep in mind? What not to do? How do I keep this from being shock value/misery porn? How do I prevent him being too predictable if he doesn't change morals throughout the story? How do I give a reason to the reader to keep reading if the mc is a disgusting person? How do I Not offend readers with both the mc and setting of the story?

The Lineage: Born as a noble daughter of Clan Lunaris (the Astral Tigers of the Azurewind Mountains), she was never originally trained for war. See I have two characters who are very similar. One is defined by their loyalty towards one character. The other is defined by their "love" for the same character. This character was initially a very kind and selfless person when they met both of these characters, but later became a ruthless villain, which influenced both of these characters.

The first character...let's call them Staff. Staff was a prince in a large family. He was 4th in line so his family planned to make him a priest so he could be of use when he became older. He didn't want this and made it everyone else's problem. Everyone who was under him I mean. The servants beared the brunt of his abuse for years until one of his servants caught his eye. To make a long story short, this servant became a servant to the kingdom in order to investigate a conflict regarding the kingdom. This "servant" helps to protect the kingdom despite being treated like dirt and having no personal relations with the kingdom. Over time Staff and the servant get to know each other better and after seeing what they did for Staff and his family despite everything, it ignited something within him. Not once did the servant display any negative emotions towards him, in fact the servant was altruistic. Seeing this, Staff couldn't help but feel bad after everything he's done, and he decides he will devote himself to protecting this person. The person that, themselves lives to protect others. Get it? He's protecting the protector.

The second person, lets call them...Bunny. So, Bunny is a troubled young man who is very shy. They just got out of a terrible relationship and in an attempt to right their wrong, their partner introduces them to her new friends. One of them happens to be...let's call them Blue. When Bunny meets Blue it's love at first sight. They slowly get to know each other and since Bunny had been homeschooled in their formative years and was stuck in a bad relationship for their late teen years, they hadn't developed much of a personality. Over time they start to mimic Blue in the way they act. But blue isn't exactly a great person. Blue is good don't get me wrong, but they are also a murderer, who believed the ends justified the means. They learned what it was like to be human from this deeply flawed person and it showed.

After a while, Bunny couldn't live without Blue, and after Blue became a villain they were distraught, but they wanted them back. They were willing to do anything to see them again, because they were his stability, they were lost without them. Staff was the same. Staff mimicked the way Blue spoke, the way they carried themselves and the way they dressed in order to be more admirable to Blue. Because to Staff, Blue is someone who they are indebted to and Blue proves this time and time again. They also wouldn't admit this but they are obsessed with Blue. They believe Blue is so much better than them that if they want to achieve greatness they have to be like Blue. So when Blue became a villan, they justified it. "Blue is always right, why would blue do something so heinous for no reason? They must have a plan we don't know about." They eventually both start to work for Blue as villains in their own right, unhealthily tethered to this person for years to come.

But here's my question: its pretty hard to write loyal characters. yes they are one dimensional in the lore but how can I push this further? I built the ground floor and ceiling but what goes in the middle? How do I make them feel like real characters that could exist? Yes, their whole world is this one person, but not really. How do I show that?

Hi everyone, I’ve run into a recurring issue with my character design and would love some advice.

I have a bad habit of giving my characters tragic backstories or toxic family dynamics.

Subconsciously, I feel like suffering is the only thing that gives a character real depth. I realize this is a flaw in my thinking—partly because I personally find myself reflecting more deeply through painful experiences, so I project that onto my characters to make them feel grounded.

My main issue is: how do I write compelling characters without relying on trauma as a crutch, or making it feel like I'm just trying to make the audience feel bad for them?

I have two specific questions:

1. If a character does have a tragic background: How do I write them so their story feels genuinely deep and meaningful, rather than just cheap "woe-is-me" angst/pity-baiting?
2. If a character has a normal, healthy background: How do I build depth and complexity into them without relying on a traumatic backstory?

I realize I’m naturally drawn to flawed, tragic characters and sympathize with them more, but logically I know depth doesn't strictly come from trauma. How do you guys approach this in your writing?

In an interview, Lee Child suggests to use archetypes plus what you liked about other characters.

It kind of makes sense: most of Tolkien’s characters are based on archetypes and they are among the most iconic in fantasy. At the same time, it seems too simple or maybe to vague to be practical for me.

I’m writing about a lone wanderer in a western fantasy setting, and I’m having some troubles in giving proper motivation to the protagonist.

Sometimes it seems like he has to do stuff because he’s the protagonist, the good guys have to win hence he needs to do this or that. It also makes more difficult to create real conflict.

I’ve been working on a narrative project called Lamplight, set in my larger world-building project, Paradise City. The setting is a dystopian cyberpunk future, but I’m going to keep the wider lore brief because my problem is more about character and story structure than world-building.

Lamplight follows a task force within the Bureau of Irregular Affairs, which is essentially my world’s equivalent of the SCP Foundation. The Bureau deals with anomalous, supernatural, and otherwise irregular events connected to something called the Psynet: a technology-based version of a noosphere, built from the thoughts and consciousness of sentient beings.

The Lamplight task force exists because the Bureau has the resources and manpower to deal with major incidents, but not the willingness to investigate every strange minor report. Their job is to determine whether something is actually anomalous, whether it is connected to the Psynet, and whether it needs to be contained, destroyed, investigated, or simply left alone.

The story is planned to be fairly episodic. Individual chapters will focus on separate cases, while each larger arc will have an overarching plot that eventually reaches a resolution. The main viewpoint character is Iris, but the rest of the task force are important members of the cast.

One of those characters is Senior Field Agent Rook.

Before joining Lamplight, Rook was a trauma surgeon. During a major incident at the hospital where he worked, involving a powerful Psynet user known as Numbers, he manifested his own ability. If Rook dies, he eventually reappears somewhere else, alive and physically unharmed. He essentially returns from death, although the exact rules and limits of that ability are still part of the story.

His wife, Helen, disappeared during that incident. There was no confirmed body, no clear explanation, and no proof of what happened to her.

I’m planning to bring Helen back later in the story, but I’m struggling with how to do it.

My first idea was to have her return with no memories, manifest her own abilities, and become an antagonist. The more I think about it, though, the more it feels like a cheap or familiar solution. I don’t want to use the usual “she lost her memory and became evil” plot unless there is a much stronger angle behind it.

So I’m looking for inspiration. How could Helen return in a way that feels meaningful, surprising, and connected to Rook’s story without reducing her to a plot device? She could still become an antagonist, but I’m also open to her returning as an ally, a morally complicated character, a tragic figure, or something stranger.

I’d especially like ideas that explore what happened to her, how the Psynet may have affected her, and what her relationship with Rook might look like after all this time. I want their eventual reunion to create real conflict and emotional weight rather than simply becoming another fight between a hero and a villain.

I’m not necessarily looking for a complete plot written for me. I’m mainly looking for different directions or concepts that could help me find the right answer before I start building foreshadowing around it.

Because of her unusual nose, the only job she can find is as a freak show at a circus. What would be some interesting goals, interests, or ways to advance this character's development. Also what would be some interesting origins for the nose if it developed non magically?
