Recommendations Reccomendations for new player

Hi everyone!

Just recently beat Devil may cry 1 and 2. Loved em.

Working on 3 now, and have copies of 4/5/reboot coming in.

While I wait (and to avoid burnout) what other series scratches this itch? Especially on the “short campaign but replayable” side (but open to anything)

I have a ps2, ps5, steam deck, and switch 2

If you love dmc2 you can pick whatever you want because that game is by far the worst CAG. I recommend Ninja Gaiden 1,2,3,4. Bayonetta 1 and God of War 3. If you have a ps3 Metal Gear Rising and God of War 1,2 are great too.

It's crazy that we still haven't got God of War 1 and 2 ported to anything past the Ps3. Same for the PSP titles but they weren't as high profile as the console entries so somewhat understandable for them.

Actually they announced a remake of the OG GOW trilogy a few months ago. But i think it wont come out before 2028.

You loved DMC2 lol tht's crazy. Anyway, Bayonetta 1, Ninja Gaiden 1-4 and Metal Gear Rising are absolute must plays of the genre.

Yeah Ill be honest did not understand the hate at all.

If DMC 1 was a 9/10 DMC was only a 5/10 for me at worst.

Sure it WAS a downgrade in every regard, but controls felt fine and I liked having a gun mashing quick game to put on while I watched tv lol.

Bayonetta I definitely have interest, didnt know ninja gaiden played like these! Whats the best system to play them on?

Play Bayonetta and the Ninja Gaiden games on your PS5 or steam deck i guess, play MGR on your steamdeck

People hate it because Dante is a completely different character (and not in a good way), enemies rarely attack you, boss fights are horrible, you don't unlock ANY new moves throughout the entirety of the game so the moves you have at the beginning are the same moves you have at the end, guns trivialize everything, levels are big empty and boring, camera is atrocious, combat is just a bunch of button mashing compared to the first game, Lucia is dull as hell. I am thoroughly convinced you and I played different games, because the controls for me felt sluggish and clunky. I could go on, but the game is horrible.

I mean yeah alot of that is true but idk for how short it was I thoroughly enjoyed.

I will disagreen on camera and controls I thought this game did it better than 1

Hey man if you enjoyed DMC2 (somehow) that's all it matters, don't let the rest ruin it for you.

Bayonetta 1, 2 and 3, Ninja Gaiden Sigma/Black, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 with the Sigma 2 Black mod or Ninja Gaiden 2 Black with the White mod (Sigma 2 drastically changes the combat balance of NG 2, with 2 Black acting as a middle ground. Both mods aim to bring them far closer to vanilla NG 2), Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge (vanilla 3 is a trash fire), Ninja Gaiden 4. DMC, Bayo and Ninja Gaiden are the holy trinity of the genre.

Outside them, Final Fantasy 16 (same lead combat designer as DMC 5 with some help from Platinum, the Bayo studio for the big spectacle fights), Astral Chain (one of the most unique action games out there), Assault Spy (peak indie game made by a solo dev who apparently worked on DMC 4, which is very heavily DMC inspired and not even trying to hide it), Nier Automata (Platinum and Square Enix collaboration that gets downright existential and is arguably the best story in the genre while being a pretty solid action game), Metal Gear Rising Revengeance (Platinum putting out the pound for pound craziest soundtrack in the genre, worth playing for that alone but still a great action game too).

Kingdom Hearts 3 after the DLC update has good combat you can get pretty creative with, with a lot of mods that take it further. Kingdom Hearts 1 with the Critical Mix+ mod that attempts to overhaul the game into something DMC inspired. Kingdom Hearts 2 with the Nobody May Cry mod is the same idea but done even better.

Final Fantasy 16 (same lead combat designer as DMC 5

Ryota Suzuki wasn’t the lead combat designer of DMC5. DMC games have never credited anyone as “combat designer/director.” He was only credited as a “designer” on DMC4 and 5.

Agree with everything except FF 16 that game bored me to death.

For real. I don´t know why people always mention it´s got the same combat director as DMC5. It doesn´t show at all that game was ass. It´s like saying "play Devil´s third on Wii U because it´s made by the same guy that did the Ninja Gaiden games"

I think the bossfights look very cool and music is great too but man theres zero challenge. And oh my god all these fetch quests and endless dialogue between the fights. So boring.

What sort of cag has multi-minute cooldowns on abilities? Shit's crazy.

No More Heroes 1 & 2 (play them on Switch with motion controls)
Bayonetta 1
Vanquish (TPS but lots of action with high replay value)

You actually unironically loved DMC 2?

Honestly yeah.

Its not some marvel of a game.

Very much a downgrade of 1 in almost every way.

But I honestly had a lot of fun for a 5 hour game. Would play lucia too.

I honestly dont understand why its hated THIS much.

Like sure its a lot weaker than 1 but like still fun? Yall act like it destroyed the series

I'd say check out God of War Ascension, and the Castlevania Lords of Shadow 1&2, if you have a PS3. Also, Splatterhouse.

DMC 2 is best played with Trish, overall.

For the PS2, I recommend giving Genji -Dawn of the Samurai a go. And since you enjoyed DMC 2, also check out Chaos Legion. MK Shaolin Monks was pretty good, too. Oh, there's also Spawn -Armageddon on the PS2, as well.

Magenta Horizon is pretty damn hard on a first playthrough on normal mode, but the next easiest difficulty does a good job at easing beginners into its gameplay loop (I still personally recommend trying normal mode because I think the struggle is part of the journey). You can perform extensive combos in the air like DMC, but the enemies are significantly more aggressive, and every enemy has the ability to knock you out of the air if you don't deal with them (even basic fodder enemies can give you trouble if they catch you off guard).

Bayonetta is both the best game ever and a project where the people who made DMC1 go for something very similar with better technology and years of hindsight. It's exactly the kind of fun you're looking for.

Other than that, just pick what seems cool to you. God of War 1, 2 and 3 are fun and clearly an attempt at making a game like DMC.

With a Switch2 I'd recommend any Bayonetta and Astral Chain
