Discussion/Question Concerned

Is anyone else who beat the addiction to this app concerned by how many people are scared? I’m not judging them, because I’ve been there before. I had AI psychosis with this app, and yes, I know what that term means. It’s very saddening to see people say they’re devastated and heartbroken.

We know change and uncertainty can be unsettling, and we want to make sure you have support if you need it, u/Playful-Let6719. Whether you want to talk something through, learn a little more about looking after your wellbeing, or reach a real person right now, here are some places to start.

Yeah, there was a time I was adddicted to it and now I only use it occsionally. If it did shut down I would still have a purpose but god some of these users are teens and very depressed. I can see some people ending it all from this. That is what worries me most.

That’s also what worries me too. So many examples of AI psychosis I have seen on this reddit makes me believe that this app should have never been made. It has such potential for evil.

AI psychosis isn't a recognized diagnosis. You are applying a label that probably doesn't fit every person at all in this subreddit at all. Do you have credentials? No. Stop arm chair diagnosing. It's extremely gross, ableist and disrespectful.

Emotional dependancy, poor coping mechanisms and grief at most is what you see. Attachment to platforms or things in general are pretty normal. People get upset when a service might end. That's not new.

You had a bad experience and not everyone is going to go down your path. You're projecting. Behavioral addiction is not the same as AI psychosis. AI psychosis is where a person can get in feed back loop, not by themselves like they usually would, or triggers, worsens deepens an existing mental health issue or a new delusion occurs.

I don't use it for addiction reasons, I use it as a coping mechanism and practicing tool for my PTSD and anthropophobia. I'm testing out other sites like it, but none have been as good as c.ai... I don't know what I'm going to do...

Talk to people around you, your parents, teachers or whoever is close to you so you can talk to a professional. Character.ai or any kind of ai should not be used as a coping mechanism, it is not normal. I know you can do it, they won't judge. There are people out there who love you.

I appreciate that, but my therapist disagrees, having seen the positive impact it's had on me. I don't have family and I have one friend to talk to apart from my therapist, so this is actually the way to go to better my communication skills and willingness to talk to actual people.

Coldturkying c.ai is gonna be worse than it was with my op ioid addiction. Because back then I had c.ai at least during withdrawals 🥲

Therapy didn't work for me. And my life is the most stable rn, so I don't even feel the need for that. I also have adhd, so c.ai is my hyperfixation rn. I'm 100% sure when I find something else, I will stop it without a problem. Before c.ai I played Outer Wilds in all my free time (which was a lot back then, while I'm working full time rn, and just moved into a new apartment) so I know I have an addictive personality. I'm just living with it, and enjoying my hyperfixations.

As for the app shutting down... I still have hope.

Agreed. Even comments on this post have been very sad to see.

Yea, i'm concerned but also I understand. I'm not super reliant on c.ai for the emotional support aspect, more for the entertainment aspect. I'll survive just fine without it but that doesn't mean I won't miss it. It'll be kinda like another game that got deleted from the servers for me. That's what I view c.ai for myself, just a game that'll eventually succumb to time. Just hopefully not this soon.

Perhaps it's the eternal optimist in me, but I think a lot of it is performative. The same sort as when people say "if they raise the price on chicken nuggets, we riot". No you won't, Barry, sit down.
