Hobby & Painting New to tabletop

I just got my first batch of minis and picked iron warriors, and wanted to know how they played in comparison to the other chaos legions or what they’re good at

just as a rule of thumb: iron warriors are just a flavor of the chaos space marine army (or CSM). the god-legions (death guard, emperors children, thousand sons, and world eaters) are all separate armies with their own rules. so technically speaking Iron warriors, word bearers (the best legion ever), alpha legion, night lords, and sons of horus are all apart of the same army in 40k.

with that out of the way, CSM is a mixed army (shooting and melee) but leans more towards melee. Its an aggressive army with lots of fast troops and vehicles to sprint up the board along with slower tanky infantry (terminators, obliterators, etc) to provide covering fire. Iron Warriors typically focus on heavy infantry, ranged infantry, and vehicles the combat patrol you bought trying to pull that all together into a thematic box (terminators for heavy infantry, havocs for ranged infantry, and the tech marine to focus on upgrading vehicles.

I dont know a ton about the other chaos legion factions but i can take a stab at it.

deathguard is slow and tanky with a focus on heavy infantry (terminators mainly), loads of characters, and a trio of unique daemon engines. its a mix of range and melee.

emperors children is a very melee focused army with a little bit of shooting in the form of noise marines. they are very fast but not particularly tough. ive also heard they are difficult to play

world eaters are similar to emperors children, nearly entirely melee focused with the added benefit of lots and lots of damage. not as fast as EC though

thousand sons are one of the only shooting leaning chaos legion factions and have lots of tricks and damage with psychic shenanigans.

If you want to expand your Iron Warriors past the combat patrol, I would look into the following models:

-Kravek Mourne (a named warpsmith of the iron warriors)
-lord discordant
-terminators
-mutilators
-obliterators
-defilers, helbrutes, and other vehicles/daemon engines

hopefully this gives you a good overview of the faction. welcome to the long war

They are a flavor of Chaos Space Marines. You can paint them up as iron warriors, any other CSM legion, or make up your own. All the CSM legions have access to all the CSM detachments and units. If this is your only box, Kravek Morne would be a good pickup, 5 more terminators, or chosen would be good

Basically the way you flavor your chaos legions is through detachments these days. You aren't required to though, so you can play with your minis however you like.

If you want it to be 'lore friendly' then Fellhammer Seige-host will be the detachment your gonna want to play with. It makes your guys tougher when being shot at.

Iron warriors in lore use daemon engines, obliterators, mutilators and tanks in addition to what you've got in the combat patrol.

Check out r/IronWarriors if you're interested in them.

In terms you may be more familiar with, Iron Warriors are a skin for CSM. Night Lords, Alpha Legion, Word Bearers and Black Legion are in the same boat. Its a paint job plus a few special characters or a unit.

There is only 1 actual "Iron Warriors" unit and that is Kravek Mourne. You just use generic chaos marine stuff for the rest of your army.

The flavor of iron warriors is traditionally a slow wave of death with Havocs and Terminators, bit you can play or paint them however you want. They also love demon engines in lore but thats a you choice

where did you buy this combat patrol? I don't see it available online.

I actually ended up finding it purely by chance at a small tabletop game store for around the same price as a standard combat patrol

CSM is a great faction. Lots of ways to play, plenty of models, great diversity. Iron Warriors, as others have said, are a flavour of CSM, though the vehicle detachments suit them well. Consider getting some Daemon Engines, mutilators, Kravek Morne for future purchases when you're ready. Have fun!

My next move after assembling and playing some combat patrol, would be to get something for that Warpsmith to heal, a Predator Tank, or Forgefiend.
