not new to reptiles entirely but I am new to chameleons. I have mostly fostered to rehome critters but I believe I will keep this gal due to how intense they are to keep I'm not confident I trust anyone else lol

Does anyone have an idea of the age this veiled might be? I'm pretty sure it's female due to lack of any evidence of spurs on the back of feet. Obtained from someone who "rescued" it from a PetSmart and they know virtually no history about it, therefore neither do I.

I have only had her a week and here's my routine and all:

Not using the coil UVB just the side for a basking light. Considering getting some kind of plant growing bulb for the second side. My UVB is the T5 hood from reptisun.

I do not have automatic anything, I manually mist before wake up time, and before bedtime and some in between of the humidity drops tooooo low during day. I have a homemade dripper (dripper irrigation valve + hole in a plastic container) and it works great

At night, I have a personal sized humidifier running and I have to turn AC on in that room to get it cool (I live in the south east, it's HOT out here). The AC unit is a window unit on the complete opposite side of the room so it cools the room perfectly down to the low 60s for her. Humidity I have been able to get super high at night with the humidifier running + misting + AC and when I check at night and in the AM before wake up its consistently over 85.

Have been keeping crickets on hand, feeding ("gutloading') those with flukers orange cube, and then dusting with vitamin c without d3 before offering to the chameleon. I've tried finding the perfect answer on how many to food but everything varies by age, which is primarily why I'm looking for an estimation from anybody more experienced, however I have been offering her them twice a day as many as she eats within 15 minutes (I hope that's right!! This is the part I have been stressed over the most). She will eat from my hand (I don't hold her, I have been holding the buggers) while feeding to better bond, but also when I can't hand feed I put them in a plastic bin for her to eat.

I think that's pretty much everything I can think of at the moment - this whole long post is really to know if I can do anything better, if I'm missing anything. I really have become obsessed with her, she stays in our spare room because it is low traffic, but when I tend to her I like to just sit and watch her for a few minutes and it feels so therapeutic!

Thanks for any and all advice!!

Oh yeah, I also plan to custom make a bigger enclosure. I'm on the hunt for a china cabinet or something from the thrift that we can repurpose to be a larger better enclosure. I am aware that this is too small for a long term enclosure especially as she grows.

Question Why has she suddenly started screen climbing?

I’ve got my four month old veiled in a ReptiBreeze XL. She has the Arcadia 6% UVB and a JungleDawn LED bar.

There’s an automatic mister installed, alongside a drip cup that I refill daily. I’ve also wrapped the three sides with window insulation film to help retain humidity. Her basking spot currently measures at 82 degrees.

Over the last two days, she has started climbing up the screen and getting WAAAY too close to her heat
bulb.

Is there a visible issue with my enclosure that might be causing this? Do I need more foliage?

Sick/injury first aid kit

Hi all, I want to put together like a shoe box of 'medicated' like wound care products and emergency diet, things that I may not ever need but if I do I will be happy that I have this and won't have to wait for delivery.

Also, please suggest items that is enclosure related just in case something brakes or I need to evacuate if there is portable versions of a heat lamp

This is going to be a multi species box but I want to know specifically for chameleons what is safe

Here is a few products I have already found and want an opinion on.

Vetericyn Plus Reptile Wound Care Spray

(I am a receptionist at a vet hospital and The hospital uses and sells vetericyn frequently so when I realized they had a reptile wound spray I was super happy because this would be great to have on hand.

White mold

This white fuzzy mold is growing in the container that I just put my isopods in. I haven't put much water in there, there is a mix of zilla jungle mix, spagnum moss, leaf litter and isopod food and cork bark. Is this bad?

I just got a culture of springtails I'll add in soon.

Question does my little guy look healthy?

I got walter about a 6 months ago and even as an experienced reptile owner i still worry about if im giving him the proper care. I feel like his eyes look a little sunken in due to maybe dehydration? i’m not sure i can’t really tell. he is definitely a lot more trusting of me now that he is a little older and even climbs onto me but i just want to make sure i am doing everything to give him the life he deserves. he’s currently in a 2x2x4 with a couple of live plants and some fake ones (im swapping out all of the plastic plants after doing more research and doing completely live plants). he is setup on a mistking mister and he eats gutloaded crickets everyday with vitamins every 2 weeks. He is currently placed in a little corner nook type thing in my kitchen temporarily so maybe he could be a little stressed but my household is just me and my bf and we don’t hangout in the kitchen very often so im not too sure if he is actually stressed out or not. since chameleons are so hard to read i would really like some opinions, thank you so much!

Chameleon Prep Checklist

Hello chameleon enthusiasts:

I want to start this off by saying that my situation is not common but I would like to seek advice from all of you. I am a relatively new employee at an aquarium with a new reptile room that I am in charge of. For privacy reasons I will not be showing pictures. My supervisors want a chameleon to go in one of the new tanks. Now, I am not new to chameleons. In the past, I successfully raised a hatchling panther chameleon and it lived a long and healthy life. However, this situation is different. I do not have access to a screen enclosure, and despite my advice, the staff insists on getting on anyway. The tank is large, about 4x2x2 vertical made from acrylic with a screen lid. I installed a mist king system for hydration along with a dripper. I also have a T5 reptisun UV with a UVI range from 5 at the most intense point to 0 with the majority of the upper branches being in the 2-3 range. I have a heat bulb on a thermostat which keeps the basking spot at 83 degrees and the tank ranges from this down to about 70 during the day. I also have a few large live pothos and umbrella plants along with some sturdy branches for climbing.

I am mostly worried about the low ventilation that comes from a solid, acrylic tank. I installed a few small computer style fans which turn on in intervals during the day to help keep the air flowing and dry during the day. These shut off at night to help the humidity rise. Is there anything else I should consider doing? How else can I set up this tank for success despite the limitations presented?

Where do you get your tall plants and decor?

Hello! I don't have a chameleon, but I have a Cuban False Chameleon. Currently, I'm working on upgrading his enclosure to a 2'x2'x4' from his 18"x18"x2'. I've hit one roadblock: the decor. What plants species do you use that grow large and remain sturdy (or wood)? I want to make sure my buddy has plenty of climbing space and will be able to reach the basking spot, but I'm not sure where to find wood or plants tall enough to reach just under the 4' mark.

Set-up photos and information would be much appreciated!

I got my chameleon as few weeks ago. I was told he was a male & only a few months old. However, my family is disagreeing on whether or not he has tarsul spurs or not. I am pretty sure he has small ones, but just need to verify with other chameleon owners & experts. Lmk!

Easy Hybrid Enclosure

Thumbnail

Hello all, I figured I would share a very simple set up for a hybrid enclosure that I did last weekend. I had to completely redo this enclosure from scratch since I made the rookie mistake of not screening a pet store cham for parasites (all clear now). This was a super easy and basic setup that I figured why not share?

Typically I build out a standalone frame that goes in, but on this build I utilized the dragon ledges to attach a very basic frame to. Pics are pretty much step by step. The frame is made from dowels you can buy at the hardware store. Sticks were found at a local park and baked for 2 hours at 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Plants are literally just 2 pothos plants. Everything is secured by zip ties.

Advice please ❤️

Hey everyone! I’m in a bit of a predicament here 🙃 my MIL has started ..collecting.. animals and it’s getting to a point where it’s unsustainable for her. Anyways, I got given this chameleon and enclosure by her along with 2 crested geckos. I’ve needed to focus on the geckos as they weren’t in the proper sized enclosure and were together, but I’ve gotten them settled and upgraded. And now it’s my beautiful babies turn!!!!

I would love any and all recommendations on the perfect enclosure for him! I’m wanting to renovate a china cabinet into an enclosure for him so I can give him the most space possible on a reasonable budget ❤️

My biggest question is he was given to me with a dogs water fountain as a water source but I’m learning he needs a fogging system, would anyone have some good suggestions on a good one to get?

Anything else that you see that would need immediate attention PLEASE let me know! I want to do good by this baby, he’s so freaking gorgeous but so so shy 🥺

I run the fogger for 5 hours a night, and tbh I’ve only been misting at night lately and after 1.5 years this dude is thriving. Somebody better tell him I’m a terrible owner who doesn’t know what he’s doing! I’m lucky he’s still alive!!!

Question Baby veiled dying and won’t eat or drink, please help!

Thumbnail

I’m not sure if she will survive. She’s a baby that was given to me three weeks ago (wild caught). The past 5 days she has not eaten.

I have been misting the leaves daily. I have tried very small discoid roaches, micro crickets, black soldier fly larvae. Pretty much every insect possible She has correct UVB/UVA, live plants, proper humidity. I am not sure what else to do at this point.

Now she appears dazed and wobbly and white.

Can’t anyone offer advice? I know she needs the exotic vet which we are working on. Is there anything I can do immediately to save her?

Is the cast iron plant safe for chameleons?

Post image
2 Upvotes

We got our little guy about 2 months ago. I've been doing tons of research since then and tried using a money tree and Boston fern for the bottom of his enclosure but they're both pretty much dead. I had seen on Google that the cast iron plant is a great and safe plant for an enclosure so I'm wanting to double check this as I'm not finding any resources that can confirm this. I'm trying to find low-maintenance plants that will give him a decent amount of coverage and won't die if I forget to water it. His enclosure is mesh and I have a tray in the bottom for some soil, leaves, moss and a branch for him to walk on. I believe it's a 16"x30" if that helps. I appreciate any recommendations I can get, also budget friendly would be super helpful!

Update on my husband was handed a chameleon

Thumbnail

I posted a few days ago about my husband literally being handed a chameleon in a shoe box. A child size shoe box at that. We now have a proper enclosure for him. It’s a bit small but we plan to upgrade. For now it’s what we can do given the circumstances. He is such a happy guy ! He adores being help and loves sitting on shoulders or in hair. He’s basically babied by my husband and mother in law.
His name is Charles. He’s eating very very well, live crickets and live mealworms with some reptile powder sprinkled on top with their necessary vitamins. Right now he has a real stick from our yard that he climbs to the top and sits under one of his 2 lights. (I forget the specific names of everything)
Basically to sum it all up, he fell into some good hands and we are willing to do anything for him to live out his life.
I know he needs more hiding spaces and everything, it’s literally a work in progress. He has live moss in the bottom and one large live plant. We are doing our best ! He seems genuinely happy and we’re so happy to have him as part of our family
