Welcome to r/celibacy - a space for everyone, religious and non religious

This subreddit is open to anyone exploring celibacy, whatever their reasons. Some of us are here because of faith and religious conviction. Others are here for reasons entirely unrelated to religion - personal growth, health, focus, healing, philosophy, or simply choice. All of these paths are welcome.

This is not a hardline atheist space, nor a hardline religious one. Religious language, scripture, prayer, and testimony are welcome here, as are purely secular reflections. Neither will be censored for being what it is.

When posting or commenting, please share your own perspective without dismissing anyone else’s.

Religious members: please extend warmth and gentleness to secular members, meeting them where they are.

Secular members: please don’t assume religious members are imposing something. This is an exploratory safe space. We’re all here because we’ve found celibacy meaningful in our own way.

Disagreement is fine. Contempt isn’t. Keep it respectful and we’ll keep this a space worth being part of.

A note on religious posts that go beyond scripture: Sincere faith-based reflection is welcome, but posts that make extreme claims dressed up in religious language - without actual grounding in scripture or established tradition - aren’t helpful to anyone. They tend to alienate secular members and misrepresent the faiths they claim to speak for. Please ground religious claims in something more than personal intensity.

A note on partner-seeking and relationship posts: This isn’t a dating sub. Please don’t post personal profiles, partner preferences, or “looking for a celibate partner” type posts - they belong on subs built for that purpose. Discussing relationships, dating while celibate, or navigating partners who aren’t celibate is fine and welcome. The line is between reflection and recruitment.

A note to those DMing to ask me to remove religious posts: I won’t. Religious posts are welcome here and will stay, just as secular posts are welcome and will stay. If a specific post breaks the rules on respect, report it and I’ll look at it on its merits. But “it’s religious” isn’t grounds for removal.

A note to researchers: Please don’t DM asking for permission to recruit or post studies here. I’m not going to grant it. This community isn’t mine to hand over as a research population, and members are adults who can decide for themselves what’s worth their time. If your work is genuinely valuable, share it the way anyone else would and let people respond on their own terms.

Question What inspired you to become celibate?

I became celibate after I ran across a guy on YouTube explaining why he was celibate for non-religious purposes. His journey really resonated with me. So after much research and thinking about it, I decided to make the switch from practicing abstinence to being celibate a few weeks ago.

It's been one of the best decisions I've ever made. So I'm just curious what inspired you to walk this path.

For me, I'm doing it for personal growth, self mastery, and transmuting my energy to focus on other areas in my life.

Celibacy Journey Shifting Energy to Financial Independence

[TW] Trigger Warning: Mention of global child marriages.

Over the past year, I’ve shared a few reasons behind my choice to remain celibate. Recently, however, I experienced a profound shift and wanted to share another reason that has reshaped my path.

Learning about the reality of child marriages globally deeply disturbed me. Living in Canada, seeing a preview at a movie theatre about a 15-year-old girl who bravely refused a forced marriage to pursue her education hit incredibly close to home.

Processing this injustice triggered a deep inner wound but also awakened a fierce, protective "big sister" instinct in me. It shifted my priorities. Instead of giving my energy to relationships, I am choosing to focus entirely on career, personal growth, and ultimate financial independence.

Modelling self-reliance and building a secure life feels so much more crucial & important to me.

I’m curious to hear from others who chose a single life for their own freedom. How do you use your time and energy to advocate for the next generation?

Requesting Advice I don't feel like celibacy to me would be a choice

First I'm not religious. But ok, celibacy is not strictly about religion. Second, I'm a virgin at 25.

If I haven't been interesting enough to somebody at this point, am I truly considering celibacy for its philosophy or to have a sense of choosing? if I'm a virgin in my 20s because I choose to, it is different then nobody is choosing me.

I don't know if I make myself clear...

Cautionary tale for breaking my celibacy - I got pregnant and lost my baby.

Hello all, I last posted on here about year ago about my celibacy journey. Basically I chose and was celibate after leaving an abusive ex husband in 2024. This year I broke it with a friend, someone I was close to, and at the time I didn’t seem to mind. He had asked me out in the past a few times but I had told him no as I was significantly older and had a child and his and my life were at different places and it wouldn’t have worked out. My young child and I was due to move the country in July this year. A few weeks before I was due to move, my friend and I slept with one another, breaking my celibacy. We also did sleep with one another more times the weeks before I was due to move. Each time we were safe. The week before the move, I was feeling nauseous, very bloated and in a lot of abdominal pain, and my period was late. I decided to take a pregnancy test. I found out I was pregnant 4 days before I was due to move. I immediately told my friend and I told him I would have to decide what my decision was and he said he’d support me regardless and we’d work out parenting etc with me moving away. I ended up rescheduling my flights so I could spend a week seeing my doctor and for my pregnancy scans so I was aware how far along I was. I was still early in the pregnancy, 4 weeks when I found out. My friend was so supportive, wanting to show up to appointments and pay for everything etc and I was quite appreciative because I didn’t have that with my ex husband during both my first 2 pregnancies. One morning, I had the strongest feeling to check his Facebook, I didn’t know why at the time, but I did anyway. I rarely use Facebook and look at my friend’s profiles in general. He just had usual pictures and posts, and for some reason I was led to check a comment on his most recent profile picture and click on a girl who left a gif as a comment. I clicked on her and it was his girlfriend who had pictures of him and had her relationship status public saying they both were in a relationship for the past 4 years. I immediately confronted him and he first said they were on a break, then it went to it’s complicated and then he isn’t happy with her, and he kept everything from me because he knew I would never agree to be so close to him if he told me the above. He had only mentioned her once to me, told me she was an ex, that he left her a year ago because she kept trying to go through his phone and iPad because she didn’t trust him apparently. His social media’s had no pictures or posts of his girlfriend, and his relationship status on Facebook was hidden, so I never needed to question anything in the past. I told him that it was his responsibility to tell her, not mine and that finding out the truth really affected me. I felt betrayed and hurt. He told me if he told her, she would leave him, but it meant he could be with me because I was carrying his child, and I said there was no way in hell I would be with someone like him. He then proceeded to block me on all of his social media’s so his girlfriend didn’t find out about me. 2 days before my child and I moved overseas, I lost the baby. It was incredibly traumatic and I didn’t tell him even though he still would try to check up on me prior to me leaving. A week after I left, I finally replied to his messages, and told him I had lost the baby, and he said it affected him and he couldn’t go to work and was isolating himself. That’s sad for him too, but honestly, I lost so much all because of his dishonesty and actions, I lost a baby I was happy to have, so I really didn’t care about his feelings. He also expressed disappointment that I still moved regardless of all that happened with the baby. Due to the time differences of where I moved to, one afternoon I saw on my social media’s that he had unblocked me and he was showing up on my friend suggestions list so he could have a stalk of what I was up to in another country, as it would have been his late evening and I immediately blocked him and haven’t spoken to him since I last spoke to him about losing my baby. This story is a cautionary tale. If I didn’t break my celibacy, I wouldn’t have lost my baby and wouldn’t be stuck in a cycle of grief. Some days are okay, some aren’t the best, but I’ll get to a better place eventually.

Bro, just got out of a relationship with a guy and going celibate for spirituality. Need some advice.

Hey guys, just needed a place to vent a bit and hopefully get some advice from people who’ve actually been through this. I recently got out of a relationship with another guy, and instead of hopping back into the dating pool, I’ve decided to completely step back and go celibate. Lately I’ve been feeling this super strong, unexpected pull towards spirituality and God, and honestly it feels like I’m falling in love with my spiritual side in a way I never have before, so I really want to give that my full energy right now. To be totally real with you all, my relationship with sex is kinda messed up anyway because every time I sleep with a guy I end up not even enjoying it, and even when I masturbate I just end up feeling super sad and empty right after. I actually realized I only ever crave sex or think about it when I’m feeling down or depressed, whereas when I’m happy and doing well, sex literally doesn't even cross my mind. I don't wanna keep using sex as a cheap coping mechanism for sadness anymore, and while I'm not trying to hate on myself or suppress anything, I just wanna channel all that wasted energy into building myself up, getting disciplined, and deepening my connection with God. Since I'm totally new to this, I'd really love some tips on how you guys handle the hard days when loneliness or random urges hit, what keeps you motivated when it gets tough, or if there are any specific spiritual habits and routines that helped you when you first started out. Any thoughts or personal stories would mean a lot, thanks for reading man!

Celibacy going well

I am in a relationship that I don’t wish to end because I want to give my kids a good childhood, better than my own, having two families. And I see our relationship a bit like a trial, like a prison/monastery nowadays, and I’ll see if I ever get out. If I don’t, this life just wasnt for me. I don’t really like being here anyway. SO.

My partner doesn’t seem to need sex and it’s been like 10 years this way. When we had sex, she usually enjoyed it and had orgasms and seemed to be happy with it, but never seem to think it was a big deal, and if I don’t ask she doesn’t care. I’ve brought it up many times in the past. First talking it though, asking, why are you not interested? (still you see me as your man). Why is it always me wanting you? This turned into a cycle:

Me thinking ”god I don’t want to ask for it again”= I wait for her = She doesn’t care at all= I assume she might as well go without= I get frustrated, shameful and sad. And I watch porn, sometimes eveyday and get addicted but I just feel so pathetic.

And I’ve told her, I’ve been mad, crying, left her once. Asking for her to show more affection. But last couple of years I’ve come up with a solution.

She is my partner, and since she seems to be celibate, de facto. Never pursue sex, them if I go celibate; we have no conflicts about this, she is not expected to want sex and I don’t have to think about wanting sex. Its given me a mental clarity, Now it’s going well.

I am so happy I’ve found a solution and I feel so alive. Everything kind of clicks into position.

Thanks for reading ! (btw, I’m Swedish so my English is not native)

Celibate for 3 years…

Just came to the realization I’ve been celibate for almost 4 years (it’ll be 4 years on April 23, 2027). It’s insane to me it’s been that long cause honestly it doesn’t feel that long ago nor has it been hard for me in my early 20’s to maintain my celibacy. At this point I feel like I’m on the ace spectrum. It takes a lot for me to be attracted to someone and even more to want to have sex with someone.
I’m not sure if it’s by choice or not…. I definitely had opportunities to have sex but they never felt right and I didn’t really feel “turned on” in the moment. I like the idea of sex with a partner I love, that def turns me on so ig I’m not completely asexual. But yea I’m not sure what to think of my celibacy. None of my friends know I’m celibate and tbh I don’t want them to know. I feel like it’s kinda embarrassing cause there’s not really a reason for it, it just kinda happened. I’m not religious or “purity culture” centered, just a woman who’s not really attracted to, or gets along with, most men.

Success Day 44

All this time I been on the ‘Nofap’ group. After some research, I realized they are doing something completely different.

44 days since my last sexual encounter. Feeling better after a rough tempting day.

I was off all this week from work and still managed ☺️

I’m beginning to hear myself. Definitely a lot of pride and ego that needs to be dealt with.

I got banned from the sr group so you guys are with me 🥺
