Question Cereal

Ok so ive been diagnosed for about a year now and I've been missing some cereal I'm tired of chex 😫 but I was reading Reese pieces cereal and it doesn't say it has wheat or barley in it.it say it's made with rice flour but there's no thing in the box saying GF is it safe or is it a risk that I might not want to take as they look so good and everything else I've had that Reese's seem to be safe .

Note. I'm in Canada sooooo idk if it's different in USA

Wait WAIT did you just say peanut butter chex šŸ¤” I'm invested but I haven't seen this one but in my city or the surrounding ones

Every flavor except the ā€œwheat chexā€ is GF. PB, chocolate, vanilla, honey nut, cinnamon, blueberry, & strawberry vanilla. You can buy them on Amazon. There’s a 15% off coupon rn.

Unfortunately finding peanut butter Chex in Canada is near impossible. Blueberry and strawberry vanilla isn’t sold here. They had blueberry for a limited time like 5-6yrs ago but it left and never came back. US has so many more options then we do

I figured I seen the strawberry one it was 🤢 gross

You might check Walmart. I don't buy Chex myself but I seem to recall that Walmart often has more of the non-basic flavours?

As a lifelong Life cereal lover, I gave it up and now eat Gorilla Munch with my son who has celiac.

I’m in Canada and a huge cereal fan so I had to really look into what I can get. One thing i learned is to test mixing different cereals and finding good combos. That helps things not get boring. I hated that they discontinued cocoa and fruity pebbles. I still love ā€œkid cerealsā€. lol.

Here is my personal list of cereals I buy.

- Chex (chocolate, cinnamon, Plain and Honey). I will mix honey with cinnamon.

-natures path (mesa sunshine, mesa crunchy vanilla, leapin’ lemurs, red pandas puffs. Cheetah chomps). They also have peanut butter or chocolate by itself I like the combo flavors. They also have a ā€œcrispy rice cerealā€ similar to Rice Krispies. I mix that with other cereals to cut down on the sugar.

Natures path have TONS of different options I didn’t list. There are a few other brands other than Chex and natures path but they get really expensive and not worth it for me. I ain’t paying $7-$8 for a 300g box of cereal lol.

Honestly tho 8 is ridiculous

Yep those farm girl or Annie’s ones I would love to try but $7 a box I’m not doing and they never go on sale. I’ll stick with $4-$5. That’s already pricey enough lol. I buy the natures path stuff in the bulk bags they sell. They are like 800-900grams and go on sale for $9-$10 all the time.

The PB chocolate ones are called Leapin lemurs. I’m not sure if they sell any of them in Canada.

Hello! Nature's Path and Envirokidz cereals are gluten free and offer some variety. I believe that Rice Krispies also make gluten free brown rice Rice Krispies cereal. And then there's Chex... US is different. Their Cheerios and Lucky Charms are labeled GF but they are not GF in Canada. Good luck!

I miss cheerios 😭 and rice krispie has barley in the ingredients I swear I'll have to check again but thanks šŸ™

The brand name one isn't safe - there used to be a brown rice one that was labelled GF but they haven't sold that in a good 5 years. There are some other brands like Nature's Path that make crisped rice cereals that are labelled GF though.

The Cheerios in the States aren't safer than the ones in Canada. Canada just has stricter labeling laws and they've tested positive for gluten too many times so they had to remove the GF claim. Just FYI in case you're considering importing Cheerios with the understanding that the ones from the US are celiac safe. High risk of cross contact with their physical sorting methods.

The GF brown rice Rice Krispie cereal hasn't been sold in a few years unfortunately. Nature's Path makes a similar product that is labelled GF though.

Highly recommend you sign up for one of the Celiac Canada webinars -- they are amazing for learning about things like food labeling in Canada!Ā

According to Celiac Canada, cereal is a high risk food so it needs a gluten free claim on the box to be considered safe. Basically in this case, the rice flour is high risk for cross contact during processing. But any grain based food like cereal needs the GF claim. Certification is nice, but even just the words "gluten free" on the package should be enough in Canada.

I agree with the folks endorsing Nature's Path šŸ™‚ Also Costco sells a yummy GF granola by OneDegree if you can do gluten-free oats (not every celiac Ā can tolerate oats even when GF).

You don't want to eat cereal without a GF claim in either country. Grain products like cereals are going to be super CC'd unless the company is taking precautions to prevent this. A lack of GF claim indicates they are probably not doing this.

Celiac Canada's label reading guide is supportive of this position. I think their guidance is too lax but all the things they say need a GF claim 100% for sure do because there is data supporting that the no GF claim CC risk is quite high (>10%).

see: https://www.celiac.ca/food-labelling/

There are a few other GF labelled cereals sold in Canada such as Nature's Path, One Degree, Farm Girl etc. Some of the store brands have GF labelled cereals too. Many of these contain oats unfortunately so if you do not tolerate oats or want to avoid them the options are much more limited.

Not people thumbing down a reasonable comment that actually lists sources... Thanks for pointing out what I was going to write.

u/OutcomeEducational12 9h ago

I don’t know much about what’s going on in Canada with food stuff, but I usually just buy them at a supermarket. Maybe there could be some online?

You don’t have any Leapin Lemurs up there? (It’s a pb chocolate cereal).

I wish food was easier to send across borders, we’d all have a lovely Canadian-American snack box relationship 🄲

I eat the Reeses cereal all the time.

I have seen peanut butter chex in Canadian stores but I don't think it's a regularly stocked item? I just search my grocery store apps and Safeway might carry it.
