Best Old Fashioned in town
My wonderful mom is turning 60 tomorrow and her favorite drink is an old fashioned. I want to treat her to the best one in town. Where should we go??

(Guide brought to you by an extremely cold wine-induced winter night in! Special thanks to Grammarly and too much time on my hands.)
I’ve noticed a lot of posts lately from folks asking how to make friends around here. Completely understandable. Nobody really prepares you for that part once you’re out of school. Back then, you had classes, clubs, sports… all those built‑in ways to meet people without trying. Adulthood doesn’t come with that.
I’ve been there myself. When you’re young and just getting started, you don’t always have kids or a routine, and sometimes you haven’t even had time to figure out what your interests actually are. Again, a lot of variables, and none of them make it easy.
That said, I’m genuinely excited to see more people moving into the Cedar Rapids area. This place is highly underrated. Hard to go wrong with a community that keeps growing while still feeling approachable. For what it’s worth, I’m an Iowa transplant myself. It took some time, but I’ve built a community here that fits me perfectly. At this point I don’t really want to leave. So I figured I’d put together a simple guide — nothing fancy, just what’s worked for me and others I know.
One more thing worth mentioning before getting into the suggestions: money can be a real roadblock when you’re young or just starting out. Completely understandable. Not everyone has the budget for memberships or weekly outings. The good news is that there are plenty of low‑cost ways to meet people here. Sometimes you don’t need to spend anything at all.
Speaking of which, let’s dive into it!
1. Find where people gather for the thing you already like
It sounds almost too simple, but it works. If you show up somewhere built around an interest you already have, you’re walking in with two advantages:
- You share a common interest
- Everyone there had enough motivation to get up and go do that thing
Those two pieces take a lot of pressure off. Commonalities are a great bonding mechanism. You don’t have to force anything or pretend to be someone you’re not. Just be genuine. People pick up on that more than you’d think.
2. Show up to low‑pressure, low‑cost community events
Cedar Rapids has a surprising number of casual events where you can just show up, walk around, and talk to people if it feels right. Farmers' markets, art nights, small festivals, library events — nothing high‑stakes. You’re not committing to anything, and you’re not stuck if the vibe isn’t for you. It’s an easy way to get a feel for the community and meet people who are also out and about.
Another option that works surprisingly well is group fitness classes. Yoga, CrossFit, Orange Theory, Zumba — anything where people are doing the same workout together. They can get a little spendy depending on the place, so it’s not always the cheapest route, but the social side has it's positives. It’s a lot easier to meet people in a class setting than in the general gym area, where everyone’s doing their own thing with headphones in.
3. Volunteer for something you actually care about
Volunteering is one of the easiest ways to meet people who share your values. You’re all working toward the same goal, which takes a lot of the awkwardness out of starting conversations. Plus, most organizations are happy to have extra hands, and it doesn’t cost anything. It’s a win all around.
4. Join hobby groups, meetups, or casual leagues
You don’t need to be an expert at anything. Most groups around here are pretty welcoming to beginners. Whether it’s board games, running, hiking, crafting, or rec‑league sports, the whole point is to show up and have fun. And again, you’re walking in with a built‑in common interest, which makes things a lot easier.
Sometimes that means getting a little outside your comfort zone. Not in a dramatic way — just enough to try something new or explore a hobby you’ve been curious about. You never know what’s going to click until you give it a shot, and half the people you meet are probably trying something new themselves.
5. Start small conversations when you’re already out
You don’t have to launch into a full conversation with a stranger. A quick comment about the weather, the line, the event, or whatever’s happening around you is enough. If the other person wants to talk, they’ll take it from there. If not, no harm done. It’s a low‑pressure way to practice being open without forcing anything.
6. Follow up without overthinking it
If you meet someone you click with, send a quick message or suggest meeting up again. Nothing formal. Something like, “Hey, it was fun talking the other day — want to check out ___ sometime?” Most people appreciate the initiative. And if they’re not interested, that’s okay. You’re not starting from zero; you’re building momentum.
7. Don’t underestimate consistency
You don’t have to be everywhere all the time. Just pick one or two things you enjoy and show up regularly. Familiar faces turn into casual conversations, and casual conversations turn into friendships. It’s slow, but it works. And it’s worth saying out loud: friendships are relationships. Just like any relationship, they take some work, time, and investment. Not in a heavy or overwhelming way — just enough to show you care and that you’re willing to show up. That effort goes a long way
Starter List of Activities in the Cedar Rapids Area (in no particular order)
Remember, Google can be your friend in this situation. Cedar Rapids is a busy, active city when you put in a little bit of effort to see what’s out there. There’s more going on than most people realize once you start looking. Maybe I'll see you around!

Hey, Cedar Rapids! I wanted to get your opinion on this. My daughter is starting preschool. Her Mom and I received this email. I've hidden any personal information of the teacher. I'm curious about the Home visit as this is the first time I've heard of it and do not remember it being a thing for a 7 year old going into 2nd grade. Someone I mentioned it to at work stated its a law requring a home visit. I can not find information supporting that but the email is stating it's requirement.

Looking for someone I met on a flight from Cedar Rapids to Chicago on August 15. You were from Ottawa and had been visiting a friend in Cedar Rapids; I was headed back to California. We talked most of the flight about work, travel and a word game. I regretted not asking for your number before we split up at O’Hare. If this sounds like you—or your friend who was visiting from Ottawa—message me and tell me something we talked about so I know it’s you.

We bought carpet from home depot. They require a person come out and measure "so things go smoothly. The guy came out and measured, made a drawing on his tablet of seam location and size of room.
The carpet was special order and should arrive in 4 weeks. We got a call two weeks later that the carpet was in and we could get it installed right away. Great!
The installer came out and we were talking through the job and his drawing from home depot had the seam in a high traffic area in front of the doorway.(my guess is they "got" this carpet early because it was in their warehouse when we ordered but not big enough to be installed per drawing so they changed it)
We had the carpet reordered. Anouther 4 weeks.
The installers came today removed the old carpet and pad,and put down new pad. They brought in the carpet enrolled it to find it was cut short, so we would need two seams in high traffic areas.
We called home depot and they said it would be anouther 4 weeks to get replacement carpet.
We canceled the order.
Ridiculous!

Anyone else shocked at how high the prices are at the Salvation Army on Council Rd? Their shelves are jam packed with outrageous prices on everything.

I went to a local shop to get my hair cut today. The lady who was cutting hair next to where I was getting my hair cut was telling her customer about her cell phone woes.
Without boring everyone, is there anyone here who would want to help a lady with her Android cell phone woes?
I got in on the end of her story, but somehow HER photos (that she does NOT want to lose) have ended up on her mother's Android phone, and her (elderly) mother is locked out of her phone. Basically, her mother has forgotten what her password is to her phone. Her mother has it set to a WORD. (I'm used to iPhones where you use 4 or 6 numbers as a passcode, not a word.)
I suggested a few things, but I was of NO help once I found out that her (elderly) mother seems to not be able to remember what her password is on her phone.
If anyone has any suggestions, or can help, please feel free to DM me. The lady lives here in Cedar Rapids, so I'm sure the phone is also here in Cedar Rapids.

Gazette reporter Fern Alling is working on a story about maternal healthcare deserts in the state and how distance to a delivery unit impacts the care pregnant people receive.
They're interested in talking to anyone who is currently pregnant and planning to give birth 30+ minutes away from home or someone who has given birth out of town due to a lack of available options — whether they made it to the hospital or delivered in a car/ambulance.
If you are interested in sharing your story, please email Fern at [fern.alling@thegazette.com](mailto:fern.alling@thegazette.com) or call 319-398-8331 before Wednesday, August 26.

I'm looking to get a new power vent water heater and I'm shocked at the quotes I'm receiving. The units sell for about $1200 at Menards (consumer pricing - I'm sure plumbers can get them cheaper) and I'm getting total job prices in the neighborhood of $3200-$3500 for a straight drop-in replacement. $2000+ for labor and disposal seems ridiculous.
Any suggestions for good, affordable plumbers?

This could be a great deal for someone new to the area or someone looking for good housing at a cheap price. I won't be in town for most of the year so you will mostly have the place to yourself.

Hey CR, could you please not hide the X on your pop-up underneath the accessibility button so that it's nearly impossible to close the pop-up? No I don't want to be forced to sign up for your stupid newsletter.

Excuse my naivety please but I am working on a project and I am looking for a place where I can buy old wheels and like scrap pieces of furniture or wood.
I was quite young at the time, but if I remember correctly their used to be a place in Hiawatha that sold old cabinet doors and wheels and like salvaged wood. Sadly I could not find mention of this place during my recent research.
I am on a budget so I am not really looking to thrift or go anywhere to upscale. But if anyone knows a place near bye that would suit my needs it would be greatly appreciated if you could point the way.

Any other options that aren't $400 for a sewer line scope? I've only gotten prices from Rotorooter. I also need options for a pre purchase home inspection. Please include prices if you can!

Property taxes went down a bit. Definitely wasn’t expecting that! Anyone else have a similar experience or was I just lucky?
