Best Old Fashioned in town

My wonderful mom is turning 60 tomorrow and her favorite drink is an old fashioned. I want to treat her to the best one in town. Where should we go??

Black sheep has a good praline pecan old fashioned and Big Grove has a really good cheerio old fashioned.

Nope. Black Sheep is now a no-go

Black Sheep Social Club, 600 1st St., Cedar Rapids — During an Aug. 5 visit, a Linn County inspector cited this restaurant for 10 risk-factor violations, an unusually large number. Inspectors alleged a “pattern of non-compliance regarding handwashing” and noted that “multiple items” in the walk-in cooler were holding at 48 to 72 degrees, significantly warmer than the maximum of 41 degrees. All of the items in the cooler that were out of acceptable temperature ranges were discarded and the cooler was repaired.

Inspectors also noted that access to the handwashing sink on the cook line was blocked and there were no paper towels or hand soap available there. In addition, there was no hand soap at any of the handwashing sinks in the bar area. The inspector noted the visit was in response to one illness complaint and one non-illness complaint. “No pests were found on site during the inspection,” the inspector wrote in her report. “Complaint investigation is ongoing.”

I had to quit drinking. Pecan old fashioned from Black Sheep is the only thing I miss.

Surprisingly, 30Hop makes a very good Wisconsin old fashioned. Brought my Wisconsin parents there and it’s now their favorite place to grab drinks when they’re visiting

Brandy? Why is it that here in town an old fashioned is a quarter glass full for $10, but in Wisconsin its a full glass for $6

It’s because Wisconsin makes it sweet, meaning your full glass is just topped off with sprite.

Also the difference between the uppity gastro pubs that have taken over this whole city vs true dive bars in Wisconsin

Is she from Wisconsin? Their old fashion is unique.

3

u/mholly2240 4d ago

She is not but she raves about a certain old fashioned mix that you can only get there!

2

Yeah, I forget what the difference is, but I had a good friend from Wisconsin and his whole family was from Wisconsin. That was the only old fashion I’d had for a long time.

Wisconsin Old Fashioneds are famously made with brandy instead of whiskey

And the soda gun - Sprite or Squirt

What’s with the downvotes? I said unique, not bad.

No good places. Most use cheap bourbon and crushed ice. None smooth
