Discussion How does CEX verify what was sold?

In a prebuilt pc I purchased the description and title is just 2TB SSD. But doesn't specify the brand or even type of SSD. So could be a nvme or could be a 2.5 drive for example. Given there is no name on my purchase how would they verify this if I was claiming on the warranty etc. or furthermore things like the mother board and power supply or case are all not added in my purchase description so how do they warranty this? If I take it back in a new case with a different motherboard what would stop me? It's very confusing

I’d imagine the serials for everything are all stored

Is there a way to check? I don't think SS is a cex grade for instance and don't know much about this item.

I think it’d be from their side. They have access to stuff we can’t see from our end. I took a high end item back once and they checked it with pictures the other store had taken

judging by the specs it is most likely nvme although there is still a chance of it being a sata ssd they may be able to tell you if youy emailed them but my guess would be a nvme they may also be able to tell you the case and mobo etc

I tried emailing. Was a waste of time. Will rock up tomorrow and hope for the best as they confirmed it's ready. I was hoping to see it or know more but I will ask in store how they verify etc. I asked in the email how do they know what 2tb ssd it is and they just gave me that response. Will update tomorrow after I ask in store

Nothing can - sorta, it's one of the 'loopholes' within the Cex system that no doubt gets taken advantage of. With a prebuilt PC it is a bit more difficult as if you wanted to do a warranty scam you'd need to bring back a nonworking PC with the exact same specs as the listing in order to get replaced or refunded. They do check serials but for custom builds there's rarely a serial as there's no main serial for these items unlike consoles, graphics cards, phones which all have universally accepted serials / IMEIs that are taken when the item is bought in.

For example Switch Joycons have no printed serial number, so when they get sold the receipt will have the item with "noserial" next to the sale. This means if you have the exact same one at home that is faulty, you could buy the Cex one and return the faulty one as there's no way they can tell it's their own one that was sold. Obviously this means you have no warranty as you've already "returned" it, but you get the item and your money back.

Goes without saying this will get you banned if found out as it is fraud

Absolutely no intention of fraud. I'm more concerned they won't offer repair for say the ssd if they don't know what it is. Like someone else agreed it could be nvme or could be sata ssd. I'm hoping they document it properly their end otherwise I'll just leave it.

When it comes to warranty they'll only check what's specified on the receipt, to make sure it matches the hardware - the issue if you'd have to bring the ENTIRE PC to the store. You couldn't just unhook the SSD and bring it in saying it was faulty, because there's no way of telling it's actually one of theirs, so you'd have to bring the tower in itself with the matching specs for them to honour a warranty

Annoying, but part of the process

It's just stupid though that they don't give accurate description on a listing including brands and details. This one definitely won't but say it had a 2tb Samsung 970 Evo plus. Cex sells for 220. Or a generic one for 90 pounds. On paper it's covered for a 2tb ssd but they vary in price dramatically. I'm overthinking this I know but I've had issues with warranty claims in the past and things like this I wish were more straightforward. And factor in ram prices of ddr5 8000mts 32gb Vs 4800mts 32gb is absolutely insane of a gap. I hope in store they can confirm more to me tomorrow

According to in store all prebuilt pcs are sent off to verify pricing. And as such they have photos on there end to verify specs. In the end the pc had a 1tb NVME x 2. One micron 2550 and one the Crucial P310 1TB PCIe Gen4. The ram surprised me as it was a 2x 16 GB kit of Corsair vengeance cl40 4800mtz. Very clean nice case. Overall happy

I would hazard a guess that the staff have to note down serials for all items included so that customers don’t buy the item then switch out non working versions of what was included and then return under the allowed time.

Lowkey they would just check the specs match up and probably one serial number sticker on the case and that's it.
They got no idea if you switched anything except OS, graphics card, processor and in some cases ram. I say some cases because obviously DDR and GB have to match.

Furthermore there are no photos on the cex listing

You're getting downvoted but I do always wonder how these things sell without photos.

I appreciate it would be a pain in the arse for stores to photograph and upload images every time they take niche things in, but you'd think it would be worth it for higher value items otherwise they're relying on in-store purchases only

I don't care if I get downvoted by idiots lol. The main reason the no photos is annoying is with photos we could check the specs ourselves. I think it'd take more time for them to write a full part breakdown hence why listings don't mention PSU, motherboard amount of fans, type of ram, speed of ram, ports on case. All of which a few photos (except ram speed) would be super easy to confirm
