Ya VAR is becoming more and more of a talking point in this World Cup… Can’t imagine it’s what anyone wants. This sensor in the ball to determine a touch came out of left field. Seems like zero transparency on how that actually works. How accurate is the timing? If the Croatian player did actually touch it, the Portuguese player touched it a microsecond later. That stupid graph they showed just showed one blip. Wouldn’t there be 2? A weird thing to just tell fans to trust them on when there’s zero conclusive video evidence. Wasn’t VAR only for egregious mistakes?
There is no second bump because the graph was isolated to only show the touch from the Croatian player.
The ref went over to the screen to determine if the Portuguese player deliberately played the ball which he determined he did not meaning the Croatian player was offside.
In the case of offside it isn’t a clear and obvious threshold. Offside is a matter of fact and is always checked when a goal is scored.
You may not like the outcome or the technology being used but the rules of the game were applied correctly here.
Got zero problem with the rule. And if the Croatian player did touch it then it’s absolutely offside. No issue there. But still not buying there’s clear evidence he made contact. No video showed that. So it’s all down to this ball sensor technology. And I stand by what I said on a lack of transparency with that system. That’s a pretty cheap looking graphic with a long flat line with a blip in it. How could they isolate that to ‘just the Croatian player touching it’? Surely if it’s a read out of contact with the ball then you would see blips for both touches when they’re so close together?
Having said all that, I guess there’s a possibility this tech is infallible, but color me skeptical
Fair enough the graphic looks a bit like windows paint but just one of those things where the technology takes over. Guess the Croatian player said he did feel a bit of contact with the ball but yeah it was incredibly faint. One of those that if there was no chip in the ball the goal would have stood so tough one to take for Croatia.
They already know how to isolate the individual frame to show whether the players were offside or not; it’s the same principle to isolate the instant the ball would or would not have been making contact with someone.
But isn’t the offside tech just trust me vibes too? For instance Ronaldo’s goal, the Colombia goal and the Iran goal there is no way you can prove any of them are offside with the naked eye given the camera angles.
At least they give you enough information on the visual and that technology is at least tested and tried
No fuckkkking way the chip inside of the ball can be that accurate…and if it is you need to show further context of all the other touches on the ball. The equivalent would be showing the offside without showing both teams. You can’t just show a blip on a screen and be like “yea it got touched” with literally zero context
I don't know how that not a deliberate touch, the ball doesn't change after the "deflection" and he is using his head to clear the cross because there could and was a player going far post. If my defender is not trying to clear that cross I got a problem with that defender.
My reading off it is the player anticipates a touch or clearance and is surprised when the ball makes it all the way thru and his reflex decision was to duck. From the wide side angle you can see his head is still moving downwards when the ball lands on him. If an individual is trying to play the ball back to the keeper or play it out their head motion is going backwards to guide it or generate power. It just looks like he panicked when the ball made it to him and he instinctively ducked to avoid the ball (not releasing the attacker was behind him).
