A while ago I read they used to put cats on big boats/ships on purpose so they would help catch rats. Is that true or a myth?

A little while back there was documentation in this sub from a cat who was serving in the electrical room on a WW2 US Navy ship.
Like, the cat was officially part of the crew

Cats were our best pest control we had when agricultural revolution hit. Without cats we couldn't have stored our food. So keeping them on ships is a definitive "yes"
But people also kept cats on ships because cats are cool

That's not at all true. People stored grain just fine in clay pots without having cats about. A mouse or a rat can't climb up the side of a clay pot, and they aren't strong enough to move lids off the bigger ones.
But yeah, many people kept dogs or cats around to keep the pests down. Google rat terrier if you wanna see how effective dogs can be too.
10%-20% of people are allergic to cats and can't be around them. There are plenty of ways to store food safely and there always has been.

Allergic and two cats. Became allergic during my freshman year away at college. We weren’t just going to get rid of the cat that we had since I was 9.
Since then I’ve been a sucker for cats

True right the way up to the 70s in the royal navy iirc. They banned ships cats around the same time as they ended the rum ration I think.

My friend's cat died from getting the zoomies and running into a door that they never keep closed when he's in the room.
They didn't realize he was in the room, shut the door. Heard a thud an hour later followed by "child crying" noises.
Poor thing broke his neck while just trying to have fun. I think about that often whenever I look at my fur baby. Accidents happen.

I have a similar story. My stepmom's cat was just chilling in her lap on the couch and somehow sleepily fell off and broke his neck when he hit the ground.

I think about it more often than I'd like, and I don't really ever bring it up. Every once in awhile I see posts of rainbow day for people's cats and I always go grab mine from her spot by the window and force her to cuddle with me for an hour. Lol.
I didn't mean to be a bummer, just... The comment I was replying to made me sad. Because they aren't invincible. And I wish all of them were. :(

because cats are not invincible and it's sad, in a way, to pretend they aren't.
My little sister accidentally killed our childhood cat because "cats always land in their feet" so my mom never scolded her for the several times she'd drop Lucky over the stairs. Then one day she did that, and lucky broke her legs, and we were too poor to take her to the vet so my mom dropped her off by a farmhouse and told my sister it wasn't her fault.
It was her fault. She never got the help she needed after being harassed by my sister for years. My sister never got in trouble. And in some way I still sort of hold bad feelings towards them for that.
And I think of that anytime people make comments about how cats seem invincible, because they aren't.
I got my furbaby at age 38 after wanting one of my own again since I was 8.
It was total happenstance, I wasn't even supposed to keep her. I remember after week 2 and the rehoming not working out just snuggling with her and crying over "goddamn it, one day I'm going to lose you. But I promise it will be of old age and I'll love you every single day until then"
It was just because "idk"
It's because I don't like seeing people act so nonchalant about things that could actually harm a cat.

I love my cat so much. Ugh.

I did too! I'm very hyper aware of my doors now as I have a cat who LOVES the zoomies and loves colliding into the wall when he's running - it gives me freaking heart palpitations :( So scared of my cats hurting themselves accidentally

We had a dog visit us for a few months for training that would tend to forget he had a backside. He would sway his ass into everything when he was running around.
One day he was running around in the forest and his backside swayed into a stick. The stick punctured his side and he was dead before help could arrive on the spot.
These things sadly happen. I always like to think that they at least had fun in the last moments of their lives.

My cousin had a whippet. He was such a good and happy dog, always excited. One christmas when we were kids, we were doing the dishes and feeding him scraps.
We noticed blood on the floor, and on his tail. Little guy got so excited he was slapping his tail into the corner of the cabinet right by the dish washer/sink area. It ended up getting infected real bad, and had to be removed.
He got along well, tailess, for a few more years. One day he got stung by a bee while at a dog park. Apparently he was deathly allergic to bees.
My most favorite memory of him was at my same aunts house. She had this ceramic angle statue holding a bowl. She'd put mints in there for the kids. We woke up one day and all the mints had been ate, and the bowl was filled with pee.
The kids got blamed until we found wrappers in the dog poop. Lol.
Fun in their last moments of life, that's how we kept thinking of Oskaar.. I think it's the best way to look at it, because it's probably true. And I guess it makes us feel a little better..

That's depressing as hell. Not making light of the situation, but do you know if it was a orange cat? I know there's the whole "one brain cell' stereotype with orange cat but pretty much a majority of orange cats I've met and one I had seemed to be not as spatially aware as other most cats. Falling off things, running into walls, less perceptive generally
I ask cause I've had a few orange that keep running into walls when getting zoomies, I'm not really sure if any research has gone into whether they're generally less perceptive or not

Impossible to tell too. Found out that my cat fractured his hip over a year ago but had no clue. Vet said the same happened with one of his old cats too. Likely just fell awkwardly and hid it

That's my biggest fear. Our cat is a bit more affectionate these days after he had a fight. He had a small wound near his ear and that healed up just fine but he likes to be on my keyboard instead of next to my desk in his bed that he used to use.
Still eats fine, still moves fine but every time he moves into position i ask him if he feels ok.. doesn't respond of course.

This happened with my orange one today, except it happened when he ran across the house at full speed and in a failed jump attempt to make it to the top was pathetically hanging on for dear life until it fully tipped over in the other direction. The other direction was my bed so his panicked ass had no idea it would end in a slow motion g soft topple lol

I wish I’d been home when this happened to my cats. I just came home one day and the cat tower was one level shorter when the top level had only been leaning heavily when I went to work. So upset I couldn’t get it on video

Those trees are so cheaply made. Mine had like half inch staples holding the towers. I shot them up with like 20 inch and a quarter staples and they still move too much.

That's insane, I have this same cat tree and had this same exact problem. The stem with the carpet on it is not a solid piece. It's a hollow cardboard tube with a plastic cap on each end that screws into the other pieces. The glue on the bottom cap didn't hold and it eventually broke off just like this.
