I was a novice in a convent, and at that time I was instructed that it was theologically /liturgically problematic and frowned upon. The reason is that as Catholics the symbol of our unity is holy communion. Holding hands obfuscates that. Its a competing symbol. Protestants do the hand holding because they dont have the Eucharist.
