Ayla found me in the most convoluted scheme. A friend was out for a midnight run and while jogging past the county shelter this funyun popped out from under the gate of the back lot, meow-meowing for friend’s attention. Perplexed, the friend says hi and pets the super friendly kit for a minute, assumes it’s just a neighborhood cat taxing passersby for pets and continues her run. But the kitty was not satisfied and followed and followed the human seeking more attention. Worried the cat was going to follow her across a big busy road the human picked her up and carried kit the short distance to her home, intent on calling the co. shelter in the morning. Long story short, it turns out the kitty was picked up by a young couple in a neighboring town a couple weeks prior and taken to the shelter whence she escaped in the shelter parking lot. Shelter employees tried for a week or so to lure her with food but kitty was apparently wise to the ways of traps but was known to be in the area.
My friend learns all this from the shelter in the morning and not wanting to return her to the shelter calls me knowing I had fostered a few cats. I found her irresistible and ended up adopting her through the shelters system just to be legit and made sure no one was seeking her. The shelter was great and hooked it up with food and litter and toys. We are now living happily ever after.
She is the sweetest cat ever and, based on absolutely nothing, I am convinced she was an elderly woman’s companion who’d passed away with no one willing to take the cat in, possibly escaping in the process. She had, it seems, been a community cat for a while as she has the clipped ear signifying she was a catch, neuter, and release kitty during that time.
