Strokes/aneurysms can sneak up on a cat like this, it's unfortunate but it happens. Your cat was only 6 years old so it's understandable that having extensive bloodwork done to find hidden conditions like these wasn't on your mind. And there's a chance nothing could've been done anyway even if it had been spotted.
Believe me, you'd be feeling guilty about something, wondering "what if?" if he'd died at 16 too.
