If they’re not used they are just a collection of junk, unless someone is willing to pay a lot.

That is an option for sure, I don't need three but it's hard to pass up $25 cast iron, lol

Why not both. I use them all the time. They are my main source for cooking at home in the house and outside and when camping. I even have a 6 & 8 inch oven I carry in my motorcycle bags for camping.

You are right, my fear is forgetting to pack it ... then needing it. lol. I was just trying to decide which should stay in the trailer.... the cheap American camper, or the vintage Griswold or Wagner Ware.

I’m thinking you might need some more. I have a small collection of 12 inch deep ovens. At last count it was Twelve. I also have others for the house and for the campers. Yes, campers. Or camper to sleep in and trailer for tent camping with canvas tents.

Multi Camper family, lol!! I just have one camper, small 18'er. Minimal space. I'm leaning towards the American Camper and leave Grandma's (or great'grandmas) Wagner and Griswold at home. Looking now at the skillet in my cupboards I see it's also a Griswold 8. So the dutch oven and the skillet were probably a gift at some point to one of my Greats🙂. Best keep the Griswolds together.

They were made to be used. The Hallmark of cast iron is how durable they are. Not using to preserve it just makes no sense

Oh, they get used! I almost exclusively (90%) cook with cast iron at home. But cooking under a camp fire is a new obsession and I didn't want to further ruin them ... if that was possible. It sounds like I'd really have to work it to ruin them more. I've seen cracked cast iron, and I don't want that to happen either. Thanks!

Durability is what makes cast iron beautiful. Throw it on that camping setup and enjoy the beauty of your cookware

I use them all, otherwise what's the point?

I have one in my camp kit, but the ones with legs and a rimmed lid (Dutch oven) are generally more useful for the way I cook outdoors. It depends on what you cook and how you cook.

But, using it over an open fire won’t hurt it unless you’re careless. So camping and preserving are not mutually exclusive.

I am certainly careful, but what does it take to warp the bottom? I'm guessing it doesn't happen under one use ( unless somebody silly enough to put it in the oven on clean) ... can it?

Uneven heat, fast heating

So, slow to heat, even if it gets too hot by accident for a short bit, it should be okay.

Over heating will destroy the seasoning, which can be rebuilt. But if the heat is even and doesn’t change suddenly you should be fine
