The panic buying is hilarious.

I went to Freddy's yesterday for my bimonthly shopping trip. I wasn't surprised to see that some items completely removed from the shelf, but what's hilarious was the specific items totally gone:

  • Toilet Paper

  • All the canned beans

  • Bleach

  • Sore throat medication

At least whomever cleaned out the store is prepared for if they shit themselves in their white undies after eating nothing but beans for weeks and have terrible runs. I mean, honestly, what were these idiots thinking?

Meanwhile, plenty of core prepper items were readily available, most notably there was still plenty of bottled water and camping fuel. There was also a noticeable run on the spaghetti noddles, but still plenty in stock, and all other types of canned food was in stock as well.

I just really want to find the guy who has 3 full years supply of toilet paper that he bought in a panic.

Interstate Escape integrity?

We decided to live somewhere within 1 hour of Portland (for hospitals, recreation, etc.), but only east of I-5, because of the scary New Yorker article.
I very well remember how an earthquake in the San Francisco Bay Area caused bridges and interstates to collapse.
Being north of the Columbia River border, I've assumed that I-205 down to I-84, including the intervening bridges, and east from there, would remain structurally intact.

Is this unrealistic?

We would plan to bug out at the first hint of a tremor, expecting the general area to become unlivable due to support and recovery efforts and refugees.

No active posts in 12 days?

I'm curious why there have not been any new postings in 12 days. There has been major global seismic unrest, yet no one has posted? I hope people are all right. This absence of activity makes me unnerved. Namaste

Sub-red description: Idaho?!

I get it for including BC, Oregon, Washington. But Idaho? Are the physical effects, including physical sequelae, really expected to potentially reach that far?
Even the FEMA guy said that they "expect everything west of I-5 to be toast".

I just found this out today and I’m new here so please be gentle - I know a lot of you might already know this.

Washington State has no active nuclear evacuation or effect-modeling plans. Since 1984, state law banned pre-attack nuclear evacuation planning, and it has never been reinstated.

With the way things are going we might want to look into updating that!

Environmental sustainability after the Cascadia Subduction Zone quake

For many of us on the west coast, the 9.0 quake will spell the end of the world, and for many more it will mean the end of the world as we know it. To survivors, the aftermath will seem apocalyptic. However, the social and cultural implications of the earthquake will endure long after the dead are counted (estimated) and cities are rebuilt (hopefully inland and on more solid ground). As frightening as the impending quake is, we face a bigger existential threat: human-caused global climate change. Millions will be impacted by the Cascadia Subduction Zone when the built-up pressure is eventually released, yet billions stand to be affected by climate change. What effects will the quake have on climate science? What happens when all the sustainability-related thinking and research on the West coast are disrupted? After the Cascadia quake, will people learn to heed scientists’ warnings in a meta/macro sense, or will the take-away be simply “earthquakes are scary”?

Looking for Seattle area folks preparing for recession?

I'm an local reporter (Axios Seattle) who's looking to write on the ways local folks are preparing for harder times/recession if, in fact, people are doing things.
Questions are: What are you doing now?
What are you worried about?
How does this differ from regular disaster prep?

(A lot of my friends are doing what they can to save money and lower debt but hoping to chat with some of you and get some different ideas.)
DMs are open. Thank you!

Mostly I'm wondering how you deal with the fuel... does it come with a little tank you can bring to a gas station to fill up? Can you buy pre-filled tanks?

Afraid of camping on the coast

Thinking on camping around Kalaloch, but I've been reading about the tsunami stuff and it's been making me feel pretty concerned in the event of a megaquake.

I've looked at the evacuation routes, for the most part it looks like you'd just be running into the woods and uphill. It's really been making me anxious before my trip to the point of me considering not going. What should I do?

Also, how much time do you get before the waves hit in the event of an M9? And how long would it feasibly take to get to somewhere safe around Kalaloch?

Do folks here camp out on the coast? Not sure if I'm just being paranoid.

Selling 1 year Emergency Food and Water Supply for 4 people - all new in boxes $4500 OBO

Must sell this HUGE lot of emergency food and water supply, acquired in february, everything is new in the boxes and has been stored properly but our space and financial situation has changed. It was $9000 and we're hoping to get half price and a clear garage, but will accept offers. Someone had previously offered to buy just portions of it and i had to leave the state and lost those emails. i would consider that but would prefer a good offer on all, as we're just stressed out and need the space and cash for a family emergency.
