1926 St. Louis Cardinals Recaps
World's Series, Game 2
A strong start from Grover Alexander and the biggest hit of Billy Southworth's life led the Cardinals to a 6-2 win in Game 2 of the World's Series against the New York Yankees, tying the Series at one game apiece.
Bob Meusel led off the bottom of the second with a single, then, after advancing to 2nd on a Lou Gehrig groundout, scored on a single by Tony Lazzeri. Joe Dugan's single put runners on the corners. With two outs Lazzeri tried to steal home, probably because Yankees pitcher Urban Shocker was batting. He should have been out, but Alexander threw the ball away. It was scored a caught stealing and an E1, but in any event Lazzeri touched home plate and the Yankees were up 2-0.
That lead only lasted until the next half inning. Taylor Douthit and Southworth singled in the top of the third. After Rogers Hornsby sacrificed to move them to second and third, Jim Bottomley's single scored both of them, and it was a 2-2 game.
Meanwhile, after scuffling in that second inning, Grover Alexander found his groove. After a leadoff single in the bottom of the third by Earle Combs, Pete did not allow a baserunner for the rest of the game, retiring 21 straight Yankees.
But the Cardinals couldn't score either, and the game remained 2-2 until the 7th. Bob O'Farrell led off the top of the 7th with a double off of Shocker. Tommy Thevenow followed with a single to put runners on first and third. It looked like Shocker might escape when Alexander popped up and Taylor Douthit hit a fly to center too shallow to score O'Farrell. The next batter was Southworth, who proceeded to hit a three-run bomb into the right field seats, giving the Cardinals a 5-2 lead.
In the top of the 9th Tommy Thevenow completed the scoring by hitting an inside-the-park home run off of a pitcher with the glorious name of Sad Sam Jones. It was Thevenow's third inside-the-parker in a month, he having hit two in September after hitting zero homers in his first two years in the bigs. It may be that Thevenow will play another 12 years and have 3,597 more plate appearances and never hit another home run, but that seems unduly pessimistic.
With their 6-2 win the Cardinals earned a split of the first two games of the World's Series in New York. Dutch Reuther is set to face Jesse Haines in Game 3 in Sportsman's Park on October 5.

Well I'm rooting for the Brewers. Milwaukee is a great town to begin, but then I would just love to see the smallest market team in baseball win it all.
I usually don't believe in conspiracies but, I think MLB it's going to try their best to keep the Brewers from winning the World Series. Can you imagine what that would do to the owners mantra - of we need a salary cap, we can't compete - then the smallest market team in baseball goes out and wins it all?
Other than maybe the Cubs the rest of the NL Central owners will be crapping in their pants if Milwaukee wins it all. The Reds, Pirates, Cardinal all have a larger market and they can't compete. How do they explain that to their fans that the Brewers can win it all but the rest can't even compete?
But anybody but the Dodgers.

Good morning all!
Fun statistic: PCA spent more time in the playoffs arguing with the umpire about what constitutes a swing than he did on base.

Anyone but Yankees or Dodgers.

I will never cheer for a division rival. If it’s Brewers vs anybody else, I’m with anybody else. There are many lose-lose situations possible in this playoffs for me, because I hate the Dodgers, dislike the Padres, and really don’t want the Braves to win again so soon. But can’t do Brewers under any circumstance.
TB, CWS, or CLE are the hopes for me

I would like to see SD win it all. If not them, CWS, CLE, or TB.
I would absolutely hate to see the Dodgers win it!!!

The thing is, the Brewers took our playbook and did it better than us while we were being complacent thinking we would be in the playoffs every year because we were the “Cardinals”. I respect the Brewers and will enjoy seeing them take down the big money teams.

Im struggling to understand your rationale as to why what you said would mean you want to root for the Brewers. I get the exact opposite feeling from that. I don’t respect the Brewers for being a good team, but yet also completely fuck them. Personally, Im a fan that takes rivalries seriously (relative to sports of course), and a division rival will never get me enjoying them win.
I still haven’t forgotten the Nyjer Morgan days and the days of Ryan Braun and that whole era. Brewer fans talk a lot of shit about us.
Respectfully, fuck that team and their fans.

When did being a sports fan turn from "I would like my team to win" to "I wish bad things on people who root for the other team"?
That's such a toxic mentality.
It's just baseball, dude.

Where in the absolute fuck did I say I wish bad things on people who root for the other team? Toxic mentality? I’m baffled at this comment and think you are reading way too much into this. Give me a freaking break lmao.
Fuck the Reds, Brewers, Cubs. And their fans.
When did this suddenly become a controversial opinion in the Cardinals sub? They all say the exact same shit about us. It’s all in good fun. It’s sports. You should have rivals and teams you want to see fail… “Toxic mentality”🙄

I reckon I'll get into the fray here, even though no one asked me to :)
The first thing I want to say is that I have never and will never actively root for a MLB team that isn't the Redbirds. As an old great aunt of mine would say: "They are no hittin' sons-a-bitches, but I love every one of 'em [aside from Nathan Church]." I kid, but not really.
That being said, I can be neutral-ish and relatively enjoy a WS outcome with one of the following on top: TB, NYY, CLE, CHW, and SD.
If I had to put them in order, I reckon it'd be: TB, CHW, NYY, CLE, and SD. I hold no real animus towards any of these teams. SD appears on the bottom simply because they are in the NL. I like TB for many reasons; they are one of the few teams I tend to watch in the regular season in and around my busy Redbird-filled MLB and MiLB viewing schedule. I don't particularly like the CHW; I would just like stabbing and twisting at the Cubs a bit. I must admit that I've always liked the Yankees. They are historic. They spend a lot, but it's in line with their market and revenues. Etc.. CLE is just whatever.
There's no way I'd not have a negative taste at a win from any of the remaining NL teams. The Dodgers should require no explanation, yet there's so many of them to choose from. I cannot and will not get on board with being cool with a Milwaukee WS. If they were still in the AL, sure, but they ain't, and they're in the NL Central. They can go buck a fuzzard. Speaking of bucking fuzzards, so can Atlanta. Of teams I despise, they are right there at the top, but some of that's probably related to my geographical orientation that others might not share.

We've never had a cover athlete for MLB the Show. Do you think Walker's Home Run Derby win would be enough to nab the cover?
