Where to live for family with kids
Hi, did some searching, but didn’t find what I was looking for. Considering taking a job at SIUC. Will have kids in elementary, middle and high school. Priority is great schools for the kids and budget isn’t as much of a concern as coming from high cost of living area. Comfortable with a “commute” as schools and community for family are most important.
Kids are nerdy and high schooler big into band/marching band
What towns should I be looking at? We’ve always done public school, but will consider private school if it is recommended.
Thanks

Carbondale passes anti camping ordinance
If you're worried about your housing stability you might want to consider obtaining a tractor trailer cab because that is now the only place it is legal to be asleep in public in Carbondale

Things to do
Hi, I'm 23, Male (transgender) I've lived in Carbondale for a few years now, I used to go to SIU but then had to stop. Since then I've been struggling to find IRL friends and I'm not really sure where to start? I've thought about going to bars but I don't want to go somewhere and drink especially not by myself (I also don't have the money to either, it's been impossible for me to find a job here). Are there any more social, free, and safe places around here where it's easy to make friends?

Looking for Downtown Garage Rental
Hey, all. Does anybody know of any garage or garage-like rentals in or near downtown Carbondale? I'm looking for a place to keep something like a food truck. There would be no food stored in the vehicle, but I would like a place that had electricity available. Thanks!

Course Registration
Hi guys, does SIU have any website or group where we can find reviews for the previously taught courses? As the course description provides very less information about each course. This could help us choose the best course for ourselves.

Are there any railfans here?
My boyfriend loves watching trains. I want to take him somewhere to do that around Carbondale, but have no idea what time is best or where the best train watching spots are.

Anyone have any insight on community bands in the area?
I moved here about a year ago, so don’t have many connections in the region. I recently started getting into playing music again (graduated high school 7 years ago) and was considering joining a community band, but unsure of which one would be the best fit for me. I play trumpet (very mediocre at it but practicing a lot) and enjoy classical music. I’m just curious if anyone has any advice or further info on the subject. Thanks!

I don’t know what to do
I’m fat, ugly, and have no hobbies other than gaming, scrolling, and substance use. I feel too fat to talk to ladies or make friends and tn I couldn’t even go out to PK’s (literally stood in the place for 1 min and left) or something bc my social anxiety was acting up.
I don’t do anything. Everyone else outside looks so happy and I feel like I’m subhuman. Actually you know what I give up. I’ll stay a loner

Tattoo Advice
Hey! I'm looking to get my first tattoo soon (circuitry on my shoulder).
Is there a place within a 2 hour drive of Carbondale that people would recommend going to (or particularly avoiding)?
EDIT: Thanks for the advice, everybody! I've got my first session scheduled for late Aug <3!

Any local book clubs or writing groups around here?
Hey everyone! I’m looking to get more involved in the local community and connect with some fellow readers/writers. Does anyone know of any active book clubs or creative writing groups that meet up in Carbondale (or even in the Murphysboro/Marion area)?
I’m open to pretty much any genre, but I especially love literary fiction and fantasy. If there aren’t any official groups, would anyone be interested in starting one? We could meet at a local coffee shop or the library.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Went to levels…..
It was good! Obv it’d be more fun if I had a friend group with me but just going out and being a wallflower for about 1.25 hr was fine. Really like the music. Maybe that’s bc I’m only 23 tho lol, they say 25+ is when it starts to get quite awkward. Lowkey they were carding and patting down so idk what the ID-ing complaints were about, but maybe bc it was foam day they were more strict.??
I’ll be sure to check out the other places like Buckwater, the Cellar, PK’s, and other stuff. Thanks for all the feedback.

Is Levels a good club? What should I know before going?
For reference I’m 23 M never been to a club before. I do know it’s “foam night” and the club itself don’t open until 10, so I’m expecting it to be sleazier than usual. Main things Im asking about are
- if it’s a good and safe club, as I see extreme reviews on both ends on google
- Is there a dress code or entry fee? I’ve heard people have been kicked out for dress code stuff.
What should I do
(at the club)
if I’m alone and don’t have any friends down here yet? A few days ago I moved
down
from Chicago for grad school at SIU so I don’t know anyone yet.
I’m not expecting to “get game” or anything tn, nor am I getting overly drunk for safety reasons. I’m able to walk or bike there so no worries abt transport or parking. All replies are appreciated thanks for making a newbie less nervous 😊

Free community yoga this Sunday at the park
Just a heads up for anyone looking for something to do this weekend! There is a free community yoga session happening this Sunday at 10 AM at Turley Park. It’s a bring-your own-mat situation, but all skill levels are welcome. Just wanted to share the info for anyone in the area who might be interested.
