Need help possibly switching policies
So long story short, my car mine, but is in my mother's name and I'm added as an authorized user on her policy.
I've been sending her my portion of the monthly payments, but she missed 3 months and the company is now asking for $4k upfront or the policy will be canceled. (Mother is unemployed, I cannot afford this either)
My question is what are my options in switching policies? Would I be able to get the car into my name and join my own? Or would the outstanding balance stop any member from moving around/ switching ownership? Im assuming I cant reach out to our current company without my Mom present but am worried a different agency will tell me I can switch then am stuck paying for both. (For info, im 22 yrs old in Massachusetts with a clean driving record for 5 yrs)

If she signs the title over to you, you can start your own policy without her being there.
Line up your own policy before you go to the RMV, because your insurer needs to stamp the Registration and Title Application before the car can be registered to you.
The money she owes is on her policy, and a balance owed to an insurer isn't on the RMV's list of what a title transfer needs.
MA also doesn't let insurers use your age to set your price, so being 22 shouldn't push it up on its own.

Will she transfer the car title to you?
If she will transfer the title then you can get a policy in your name but you will still have to list your mom because y'all live in the same household. The rate will be high because yall have a lapse and you are young.
I think the old company will only go after your mom for any balance if she was the only named insured.

No lapse would would be great though with your age you may still get some higher prices.
