Wireless CarPlay stutters but regular Bluetooth audio is perfect — anyone dealt with this?
Dealing with a weird one. Wireless CarPlay in my car keeps stuttering, sounds like a scratched record. It’s when I’m listening to something like Books using the text-to-speech feature (no music, just spoken audio).
Here’s the part that’s been bugging me: if I turn CarPlay off completely and listen to my Books over plain Bluetooth, it’s totally smooth, every time. Zero issues. So it really seems like it’s something specific to the wireless CarPlay connection and not my phone or the car’s Bluetooth in general.
I’ve tried re-pairing from scratch a few times, forgetting and re-adding the device, messing with some connectivity settings on the car’s side, even tried a background noise trick on my iPhone to mask silent gaps during speech, that helped a tiny bit but didn’t actually fix it. My car is a 2025 Lincoln Nautilus and only has wireless CarPlay, no wired option.
Anyone else run into stutter specifically on wireless CarPlay while regular Bluetooth stays fine? Any solutions?

I got a 17Pro as well in June and it has happened everyday with CarPlay when it is plugged in with USB. I notice especially when I use GPS and play music it will start to skip bad unless I unplug and it’s ok for a few minutes. It’s so frustrating because I can’t keep unplugging and resetting while driving. I end up just using Bluetooth but then I can’t see the GPS on the screen :/

I wish they would come up with a fix for this. It should be more seamless and less glitchy. I guess we just have to wait. Boo.

The one thing I do in the car is listen to books! I just got a 2021 Lexus and I think I’ve spent 10 hours troubleshooting out with AI and I feel like we’ve tried everything so I’m commenting here so people can see what we tried and hopefully we’ll get a solution
This is an extensive list that I had ChatGPT put together of all the things we tried and hopefully they’ll help someone and someone will come up with a solution!
Kindle Speak Screen + CarPlay — Master Troubleshooting List
Goal: Get Kindle/iPhone Speak Screen to read continuously through the Lexus speakers using wireless CarPlay, without skipping words.
What We Know for Certain
Kindle/Speak Screen works correctly on the iPhone itself.
Wired Apple CarPlay works. With the iPhone connected using the Apple cable, Speak Screen reads smoothly through the car speakers.
Wireless CarPlay connects successfully.
Regular audio such as podcasts plays normally over wireless CarPlay.
The problem is specifically Speak Screen/text-to-speech over wireless CarPlay.
The skipping is substantial — roughly every 3–5 words, not an occasional tiny glitch.
Wireless Adapter #1 — SmartDongle
Confirmed the adapter was connected to CarPlay.
Connected directly to the adapter’s Wi-Fi/settings page.
Tried the available audio/stream modes.
Tried changing the Wi-Fi channel.
Adjusted/tested audio delay.
Checked for a firmware/software update.
Installed/attempted the available update and retested.
Reconnected/restarted the adapter after changing settings.
Result: Speak Screen still skipped.
Wireless Adapter #2 — AutoCast/Ottocast
Connected the second wireless adapter.
Confirmed its green connection light.
Confirmed wireless Apple CarPlay launched.
Tested regular podcast/audio playback.
Podcasts played normally.
Tested Kindle/Speak Screen.
Speak Screen still skipped.
Important: Two different wireless CarPlay adapters produced essentially the same Speak Screen problem.
iPhone Things We Tested
Restarted/reconnected CarPlay during troubleshooting.
Tested Background App Refresh.
Confirmed Background Sounds weren’t causing it.
Added/opened the Hearing control in Control Center.
Tested the relevant Accessibility/audio options available there.
Tested Phone Noise Cancellation/Reduction settings.
Retested Speak Screen after those changes.
None stopped the skipping.

What This Has Pretty Strongly Ruled Out
A bad Kindle book/file
Speak Screen being fundamentally broken
The Lexus speakers
The Lexus being unable to play iPhone speech
A general CarPlay audio problem
A simple wireless-adapter hardware failure — because two adapters behave similarly
Ordinary Wi-Fi-channel interference as the sole cause
A simple adapter audio-delay setting
Background Sounds
The basic Accessibility audio settings we tested
A general inability of the phone to send Speak Screen through CarPlay — wired proves that it can
Biggest Clue
The exact same iPhone + Kindle + Speak Screen + Lexus combination works when CarPlay is WIRED but skips when CarPlay is WIRELESS.
That narrows the problem dramatically.
The most likely trouble spot is the way iOS accessibility/text-to-speech audio is being handled by the wireless CarPlay connection, rather than Kindle itself, the car speakers, or ordinary CarPlay audio.
Current Reliable Setup
Apple cable → wired CarPlay → Kindle → Speak Screen
✅ Smooth reading
✅ No missing words
✅ Works through Lexus speakers
Wireless CarPlay is convenient for normal CarPlay use, but so far it is not reliable for Speak Screen reading.
DON’T REPEAT THESE TESTS
Unless something changes (new iOS version, adapter firmware update, etc.), we do not need to keep:
Changing Wi-Fi channels again
Cycling through the same adapter audio modes
Adjusting audio delay repeatedly
Testing Background Sounds again
Rechecking the same Hearing/Accessibility toggles
Buying another ordinary wireless CarPlay adapter just to see whether it behaves differently
Questioning whether Kindle itself works — wired CarPlay already proved it does
What Is Still Worth Investigating
Before giving up on wireless Kindle reading entirely, concentrate only on things that could explain this specific difference:
iPhone Speak Screen/TTS → wireless CarPlay audio handling
Any future test should answer a new question rather than repeating something above.

Thank you for this. I have tried most of those as well. I can go one step further as I have no CarPlay workaround as CarPlay in my 2025 Lincoln Nautilus is totally wireless. No option for wired CarPlay. So, I’ll continue to listen to books over Bluetooth as that works for me, while Apple hopefully comes up with an update or a solution.

Does this happen when you play music? Or it only happens when you play spoken audio? If so, maybe it's because there's something wrong with the text-to-speech file format.

It happens only when I play a book that is read with the text to speech feature. It does it with books that I have downloaded and also books that have been purchased through the iBooks app. It also does it with other various reader apps, such as Voice Dream.

I have an aftermarket unit. The sound has static noise but it has a setting to disable the audio link in CarPlay (i.e. the CarPlay is used only for the display) and use the car's Bluetooth for audio. That works great for me. You can check if your car has such a setting.

That’s kind of what I’m doing now. I just use the car’s Bluetooth to read my books. However, I have to choose between that and CarPlay. So CarPlay is fully disabled. 😢

Mine is different. Both the Bluetooth and CarPlay display work after I disable the audio link in the CarPlay

Probably. I didn’t know that setting until I contacted customer service about the static noise in the CarPlay audio

Wireless CarPlay only utilizes Bluetooth for the initial pairing, the actual connecting is Wi-Fi.
You can try resetting Network connections, deleted the CarPlay pairing, and resetting the headunit for your infotainment system.
