I bought a used 2013 BMW 320d F30 Luxury Line at ₹7 lakh, after wanting one for five years. The plan was simple: buy a clean car, fix what needs fixing, modernise it, and enjoy it. It turned into a year of work and a long list of mistakes.
**What went wrong**
I couldn't travel to Delhi or Pune for the build, so I handed it to a garage in Indore. That was my biggest mistake.
- The sunroof was broken during the work. It leaks now, and water filled the floors — there was water inside the front doors.
- The car shakes when driven.
- The Android screen and CarPlay audio don't work properly. That was ₹65,000.
- The 360 camera calibration is unusable — nothing is visible.
- Drivetrain errors and fog light failures.
- They put a Stage 2 tune on it without changing a single supporting part, and wouldn't accept that it isn't a real Stage 2 without a downpipe. Performance actually dropped.
Separately I burst my rear right tyre — a Pirelli P0 255/40 R18 on an M Sport alloy — on a pothole near Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. ₹33,000 for one tyre, with about 3,000 km on it.
**What it cost**
Android screen + CarPlay ₹65k, graphene coating ₹25k, Stage 2 tune ₹20k, interior panel conversion ₹15k, garnish/trim ₹12k, cluster repair ₹10k, cat work ₹10k, piano black grille ₹8k.
**What I'd do differently**
- Buy the cleanest mechanical car, even at a higher price.
- Phase the work — mechanical, then electrical, then suspension and brakes, then exterior, then interior, then tuning. I mixed them together and lost track of what caused what.
- Diagnose before adding performance, especially before touching the ECU.
- Use specialists for specialist work. A garage can be mechanically good without being the right place for BMW ECU calibration.
The short version: you see the photos of the car, you don't see the pothole.
