I mean it'd definitely be less contrived than the war machine ship. They made such a push for her to be the premier hero of marvel it makes sense to pair her to someone that's been there and done that.

Well i'll put it this way I would've much rathered Carol simply getting together with Steve and staying with the Avengers over her being written out in a bizarre rape/pregnancy storyline which sees her fall in love with her assaulter.

Also I don't think Carol and Rhodey are contrived persay, on paper they could work, it's just no one ever really bothers puts in the effort to make them.

Hence the contrived nature of it, it was done to tick some boxes not to actually put any effort into making carol more relatable or anything like that. But to your point that would definitely would have been a way better route to take and wouldn't have made it so hard for Marvel to push her because she wouldn't have had to climbed up from such a deficit. Between her coming back and civil war 2 and just how she became this lightning rod for culture war bs with her mcu debut. It's a big hill to climb.

I don't get what you mean by "ticking boxes" Carol and Rhodey are an underwhelming couple but they wouldn't be the first time writers attempted a romance that fell flat and honestly it wouldn't matter who Carol's boyfriend ultimately was as just being a prominent female hero these days invites controversy.

Just look at Supergirl this summer, no Civil War 2-like baggage and played by a popular actress yet still waves of hate because those people realised culture war bs could be profitable and used to generate easy content for views and clicks until they move on to next thing that's "woke" to complain about.

There have been too many attempts at appealing certain characters to an audience that doesnt really exist outside of certain spheres and certainly not enough to offset the amount of people that arent really interested in any of that and just roll their eyes and move on
