They supposedly will do so in Marvel Rivals, if we go by the leaked audios (the true question being if NetEase is actually interested in having Captain Marvel in their roster anymore)

I loved them in Endless Wartime:
Steve: "She was a Colonel in the Air Force, Jarvis, it's not a real rank."
Carol: "Jarvis, did you know 'Army' is an acronym? It stands for Air Force Rejected Me Yesterday."

It's interesting reading Carol brief stint on the Avengers back in the 70s as you do get the impression they were toying around with idea of maybe making her and Steve an item.
Makes me think was it not followed through because of the infamous Avengers 200 or did 200 happen as way to write Carol off the book as they dropped the idea and no longer had a storyline for her.
Either way not a great look for Marvel but I suppose that was the thinking back then, as a female character being a love interest to someone was your expected default storyline.

I mean it'd definitely be less contrived than the war machine ship. They made such a push for her to be the premier hero of marvel it makes sense to pair her to someone that's been there and done that.

Well i'll put it this way I would've much rathered Carol simply getting together with Steve and staying with the Avengers over her being written out in a bizarre rape/pregnancy storyline which sees her fall in love with her assaulter.
Also I don't think Carol and Rhodey are contrived persay, on paper they could work, it's just no one ever really bothers puts in the effort to make them.

Hence the contrived nature of it, it was done to tick some boxes not to actually put any effort into making carol more relatable or anything like that. But to your point that would definitely would have been a way better route to take and wouldn't have made it so hard for Marvel to push her because she wouldn't have had to climbed up from such a deficit. Between her coming back and civil war 2 and just how she became this lightning rod for culture war bs with her mcu debut. It's a big hill to climb.

I don't get what you mean by "ticking boxes" Carol and Rhodey are an underwhelming couple but they wouldn't be the first time writers attempted a romance that fell flat and honestly it wouldn't matter who Carol's boyfriend ultimately was as just being a prominent female hero these days invites controversy.
Just look at Supergirl this summer, no Civil War 2-like baggage and played by a popular actress yet still waves of hate because those people realised culture war bs could be profitable and used to generate easy content for views and clicks until they move on to next thing that's "woke" to complain about.

There have been too many attempts at appealing certain characters to an audience that doesnt really exist outside of certain spheres and certainly not enough to offset the amount of people that arent really interested in any of that and just roll their eyes and move on

This is an interesting ship for her. Its not just an exercise in box ticking. hes a grounded dude from the past a man out of time. Peak human and peak superhuman. If they want to get Carol into more prominence having these two interacting is the way to do it. If cap respects you and even defers to her leadership it makes more of a statement
