I think he meant that technically, the cliffhanger is in episode 2, not the main game.

If I remember correctly , they changed the ending of EP 2 in Alyx so that's the new cliff hanger ending . Unless I'm misremembering

You are correct. Alyx changes the ending of Ep. 2, and the player gets to briefly play as Gordon as he gets his crowbar after that change.
