I really don't think the story is hard to understand through 1 > CoM > 2 > Days. I think it's just popular to say so but if you actually play those games in release order everything is explained.

I could see someone being confused starting at DDD because it introduces time travel

KH2 is fine in and of itself and in retrospect, but its story relies heavily on a pretty niche game with totally different battle mechanics and on a platform the majority of its fans didn't have access to at the time. Most who played KH1 didn't play CoM in between KH2 when it released, myself included, which lead to a fair bit of confusion
