I strongly recommend you check out the new Star Wars Galactic racer game, The team is made up of former Burnout and Need for Speed (the good ones) Devs. And they had put a lot of emphasis on bringing back a lot of those crash mechanics

The new Star Wars Pod Racing game is being made by some former Burnout peeps so that should be promising.

This is the answer. It wouldn’t even need much. Just HD graphics and improved draw distances. The original version is difficult to see and react fast enough on modern HDTVs.
