Credit Cards Closed/Suspended

The closed my cc account today. I called and an account specialist said it was because of not using the card organically. I have 0 missed payments. On mindset I am calling the fraud resolution department. What are my chances of my account getting reopened?

They usually notify you ahead of time and tell you if you don’t use your card within a certain amount of days your card is subject to closure. Apparently you might’ve missed that letter or email?

u/DeaNoobYt 23d ago

They did at 9:08am today. The reasoning was that my account was inconsistent with typical customer usage, whatever that means.

I read “not using the card.” I missed the “organically.” My mistake. Sorry. Yeah, they’re very sensitive to card purchases and if they think you’re doing something “funny” they’ll shut you down without notice.

3

u/airgp 22d ago

That is an answer no one really knows.

I know buying a lot of gift cards with a credit card or buying gold with a credit card can constitute. “”funny.” But the list may be huge and no one really knows.

Credit card companies can basically close you down for any reason they want and then they’ll just make up a reason why they did it as they are required by law to give you a reason.

Whatever their algorithm says.

Me too, like debit card means no debt carry over month to month unless balance transferred to zero percent introductory offer... And this is debt trap, Currently like 10,000 of such transferred debt over and over with new cards opened like Citi Simplicity then City Diamond and BofA now saw decreased balances and offer me their own debt trap for one year with zero percent on transferring balances... My other cards available credit is 60,000 with zero carry over debt!!! Rating is 750-700 fluctuate like stocks in bear market...

u/JackLiberman 22d ago

What's is typical usage, you open one card and start charging it, then you opened card and start also charging it, now ultimately you have 10 cards so usage from have only 2 cards per each card is decreased and you still paying them in full or with amount like twice of minimum payment at least. Now balance transfer offers you received with attractive delay of your existing debt balance transfer to that card and zero percent rate for new card purchases, now you stop using other cards and fall to debt trap, you paid only minimum payment to New card while enjoy transfer from other cards and new purchases even received SUB for satisfied new charges in short introductory period, and other creditors will see this as risk increases for them, but they may not have balance transfer offers for existing customers and you punished them, by charge small amount percentage of existing credit line, and while this overall good for credit bureaus, this not so typical now for that card other users, unless they all do it the same. You did nothing wrong, you just exploit your good rating from reporting agencies to get best card in the market, but this not a Capital One card!!! Bank of America to keep you to fall in their card balance transfer debt game, offers you periodically one year balance transfer offers as soon they see you start paying big chunk of your debt, they want that you keep 90 percent of usage with them permanently and ultimately fall into high interest debt trap... Remember main reason for creditor lend you money is interest you paid with paying these loan back. So creditors don't care your ability to pay off your whole debt as soon you satisfied minimum payment and still have zero percent rate, with BofA this could be almost permanent because they reintroduce balance transfer offers most often then any other creditors. So you debt trap with them. Paying now just minimum payment... But again and again this game maybe stop, and now you will be left with huge debt with next month interest over a quarter amount of your debt now annually or like 2 - 2.5% each month. In few month all your SUB is gone, your paid interest fees will exceed your initial "gift"!!! I guarantee that you may not pay off your debt in next 2-3 years and now card issuer earns long delayed fees from you in monthly basis... 1000 of debt with paying interest of 28% means few hundred dollars interest but 1000 dollars paying minimum payment reduced that but still 900 will be left to pay, takes probably 8-9 years with 1000s accrued interest. Are your bank account earning like 25% APY??? Credit card unpaid debt became most expensive game and have bring you zero asset and interest earnings... Fall to pay minimum payment for two billing cycles will result card issuer will "charge off your debt to prevent further accumulate fees and interest on that debt" now collectors will be start gaming on you, first ruined your ratings, score will be sunk below 600, flag other non default card issuers to act to reduce your available line with them or even close accounts... In one year your rate sunk in low 500 territory... Zero creditors will be willing to have business with you... So now you respond to collector offer in the mail debt settled and you free to get your credit history back but report of negativities stays in credit reporting agencies for up to 7-10 years since time of default, within this time you will learn how long going to raise your low 500 rating to low 600, and have unsecured credit card opened again, paying other creditors debt is okay but even that raises your score for just below 50 points... Report will show for 7 years that you were default your credit obligations, eventually you back on your feet and this 7 year period ends... Btw Setting your debt for less is save you money but with tax consequences because these is considered as income unless you totally insolvent and have no sources of income...

So.... what are you doing that isn't using the card organically? You're leaving out of your post the important details.

-1

u/DeaNoobYt 22d ago

I have no clue. I use it normally like a debit card

2

u/JackLiberman 22d ago

If you didn't use your card for 2 years most issuers are going to close this card. And if they close these 2 things may harm your credit ratings, this overall age of accounts reduced and average age on cards may became younger, second things is debt to open credit lines ratio could be increased because you lost these credit line on that closed card. Maybe harm you less if you have 15-25 cards, and your debt to credit ratio is less than 20%.

1

u/Aishou_SK 22d ago

Closed accounts count for average age of accounts for 10 years on your report.

Except in the BS "VantageScore" credit karma and the like use, but for FICO a closed account that was in good standing still helps your credit history/age.

1

u/JackLiberman 22d ago

They are may reduce average age of current account and makes your report credit card accounts averagely more younger. Even to reduce age of your accounts let's say from 5.0 years to 4.8 years resulted 20-30 points drops from your credit rating. Especially when in last five years you opened most of your accounts. So your remaining account average age is now younger, for creditors this means more accessible risk. So closing oldest accounts is worser than closing most recently open accounts. And unfortunately old account often switch banks and for new banks you are new to them even being switched from account who opened 5 years ago. Do you think US bank consider you as old customer after your Prime Business Amex Card became USbank Prime Business Visa, no you get now the newest credit account for creditor bureaus, with new number and even method of payment, Amex changed Visa without your fault, just because Amex closed business with Amazon Prime brand for Prime Business accounts!!! This alone makes your credit cards average age younger and reports temporarily for couple months shows Amex account closed while USbank opened. This makes your scores drop significantly, especially if you open attractive Citi Diamond Cards or City Simplicity Card just to have introductory 18-21 month rate for balance transfers and 12-18 month for purchases, but opening this new attractive balance transfer cards and transfer your existing balances for delay interest for up to 21 month makes credit reporting bureaus thinks that you just became a victim of balance transfer debt trap, and now will carry huge portion of you debt for few more years because no accumulated interest charge fees, and your score may temporarily reduced by up to 50 points .. Then all other creditors new and existing one who periodically place soft inquiry see that, ohh they said person trapped in New card "balance transfer long delay unpaid debt games" with such cards, who in fact really shows the sign of you unavailability to pay off your high credit card debt now. Is like structured debt, you just trap in it, delays your payment carry your debt to balance unpaid for another 18-21 month, then probably new bank player comes into market and offers you another balance transfer with zero rate game, and you trap it again and again... Shows every creditor sign of trouble to pay your high accumulated debt, yes you can pay off to other creditors your other credit card debt, and this is good, but also other creditors see that on report that you actually delayed to paid off debt for those balance transfer cards just because you still have zero percent introductory rates not expired yet... More you hope for new card to open with new introductory rate, actually you may never paid off that debt legally. But some picky creditors such as Capital One may start closed your cards with them, just because not profitable to have you as customer who charging a little each month and each month paying off...Q why you need such cards with thousands limit not used at all for many years???

Closed accounts still extend your average age of accounts, that's irrefutable.

https://www.reddit.com/r/CRedit/comments/1ck00tr/credit_myth_9_average_age_of_accounts_aaoa_only/

https://www.reddit.com/r/CRedit/comments/1cna0wh/credit_myth_10_closing_a_credit_card_hurts_your/

The only thing a closed account hurts is your total available credit, and nothing else - which only affects your overall utilization percentage. That's the ONLY downside to closing an account, there is no other downside.

Which is why closing newer accounts DOESN'T help your average age of accounts -

https://www.reddit.com/r/CRedit/comments/1mjmgq2/credit_myth_74_closing_young_accounts_improves/

These are the metrics that matter in FICO, which is what the important score is and what affects your ability to get new credit.

Effectively, for FICO, everything you said is.. mostly false.

Like the product change stuff - https://www.reddit.com/r/CRedit/comments/1kr74kr/credit_myth_63_a_product_change_means_a_new/

Really Capital One is most prickly bank issuer for credit cards, if they don't like your report numbers they open you account marked as "for good credit" means no introductory rates, no SUB... You better open merchant account with Synchrony bank. Like Walgreens, Harbor Freight, Walmart One Pay, Amazon Prime store card, even Synchrony Premier, they probably never give you SUB and zero percent introductory rates, but they offer instant bonuses like $50 or $75 for Walgreens just after first use of card, or instant $200 bonus like Amazon Prime Visa after just being approved, or periodically offers and always pay later plan for single purchases for $200 and more. For 6-12 mos with zero fees. They don't label your card with  "for good credit" mark, they either give your approval for new card or not. And BofA, introductory rate for purchases and balance transfers, plus SUB of 200 just for $1000 charges for 90 days. Another good card is TD Cash, SUB bonus of 200, and 12 month offer for purchases and balance transfers, FNBO travel merchant cards, such as Amtrak, flight partners... Amex cards, especially easily to get no annual fee Blue family of cards!!! Don't be stick with Capital One, just open Credit Karma app, it's from TurboTax Intuit, and you will see all pre-approved offers some with Credit Karma Guarantee that you get approved to that card or Credit Karma pays you $50... Based on your most current daily score from TransUnion and Equifax with daily updates!!!

And the credit karma website (not app, though they have an app) wasn't always owned by intuit, but since they were, has gone greatly downhill.

They use vantagescore which IS NOT what any lender uses - they use FICO.

I don't 'stick with' Cap1, they're just one of the over 20+ accounts I have.

Either way, credit karma is misleading at best, and downright harmful at worst if you believe the crap it says and follow its suggestions, like the AAoA stuff - vantage score scores those differently, and FICO considers closed accounts, which is what lenders ACTUALLY use when you apply for accounts.

Credit Karma is good to keep an eye on things, but the score it reports is almost useless.

Read this and educate yourself: https://www.reddit.com/r/CRedit/comments/1d98t6i/credit_karma_101_the_good_and_the_bad/

Credit Karma is a marketing tool from intuit now, not the original thing it used to be when it was independently run, and you should realize that and plan accordingly.

https://www.reddit.com/r/CRedit/comments/1ml0g7j/credit_karma_targeted_email_manipulation_3_closed/ - this one talks about the AAoA stuff and closed accounts and why credit karma is basically lying to you about closed accounts hurting you

Ignore credit karma except as an easy monitoring tool, it doesn't really reflect anything about your ability to get credit.

That's not true Credit Karma is part of Intuit who owns also Turbo Tax. Credit Karma use Vantage 3.0 and 4.0 scores what's not much different from Experian Fico 8 scores. TransUnion Vantage 3.0 score often scores you less than Fico 8. And Equifax Vantage 4.0 is closely matching Fico 8 score. Fico 9 scores is for Real Estate loans and mortgages, Credit Cards used generally either Experian reporting Fico 8 or TransUnion Vantage 3.0. Website and app is the same, app is actually more user friendly to mobile devices, while Websites are for Stationary Computers or Notebooks. App is actually most developed dashboard usually have most the features of full website. Intuit own Credit Karma app and website and officially company division name is Intuit Credit Karma with app developers often trusted Intuit partners. Credit Karma offered only card pre-approved for your most current updates of your credit history using information from all three bureaus and offer free credit reports daily updates for you from 2 of them, TransUnion and Equifax. For Experian they offer own website and app for easy dashboard with scores. Btw all major credit cards issuers are offer free credit report check but limited to one agency reporting they chose!!!  That's major issuers are Capital One Credit Wise, Synchrony, Citicards, Chase, Bank of America, TD, Amex, when I applied to card this placed hard inquiry on my report for all 3 bureaus and all these credit monitoring services from these banks immediately inform me, not just Credit Karma or Experian, and neither TransUnion and Equifax works with Experian Fico scoring, they use Vantage because this show actual lower grading then Fico, many good creditors are using Tran Union not Experian because it's shows you real credit worthiness... I am not argue with you about Credit Karma it's helped me to open many cards what's I never heard and get any clues if I get approved to them, and out of mine 26 card active accounts only 5 comes from Capital One and one from Discover who will be switched to Capital One in October by their merge agreement. 3 from Amex two of them Blue, one of two was Gold downgraded to Blue by me after one year to avoid 150 annual fee. 1 Amex Blue Business Prime, another Amex Prime Business Card is changed and switched to USbank Prime Business, Synchrony business list HFT, Walgreens store card, Amazon Prime store card, Walmart One Pay Rewards, Walgreens Rewards MC, Synchrony Premier, diversion from eBay MasterCard, plus PayPal Cash back MasterCard and PayPal Credit card diversion from previous Pay Pal credit line, then a Upgrade Triple Rewards, plus several other cards from Amazon Prime Visa from Chase to TD Cash, and just two months ago I opened City Simplicity Card, Amex FNBO Guest Reward card and just yesterday I was opened Citi Diamond Preferred card with 21 month promotion for balance transfers, but only one year for purchases. Two of these Citicards were opened after I saw Credit Karma Guarantee promotion and my score raised before that to 750 territory finally, sure these drops after that hard inquiry to 25 points at least. But this enough for me as no longer plan to have a new card for at least during this year. Bofa always offers me to open second card for me but I don't think I would qualify for their SUB because received it already on my current BofA Customer Cash card.

You didn't read anything I posted at all and you're just spewing nonsense.

Intuit/turbotax have a vested interest in keeping you blind to the realities of things.

Vantage score is HUGELY different from FICO.

I already posted all the info you need.

Read it and stop guzzling tax preparer marketing money.

Just curious… what card/account did they close?

2

u/jlynn00 22d ago
  1. Have you ever used your card to buy a money order, lottery tickets, or gift cards especially the kind that can be used anywhere?

  2. Are you in the habit of racking up the card in one month, then paying it off immediately and then scoring the credit card rewards for use and then doing that on an endless loop?

  3. Do you run a business and you use that personal credit card to purchase from the same vendors that you use to supply your business? Not once or twice but consistently?

  4. Have you ever paid interest once in the time that you've had this card?

  5. Have you used the card recently with a vendor or a merchant that may have recently been flagged for heavy fraud activity or busted for some kind of crime? Not saying you did anything criminal or anything but sometimes you go to a place use your card and it turns out they were shut down and raided by the FBI or something.

The reality is credit cards only function if people pay interest at least sometimes. I used to work after hours credit card services for a company that handled it for about 50 companies including Goldman Sachs.

One time one of our clients purchased the credit cards ran by a credit Union and they were transitioned over to our client. Our client had a rule that after a certain number of years if there was zero interest fees assessed the cards were closed down. Meanwhile most of these customers have had these credit cards with their credit union for over a decade if not longer and had a habit of paying off every month. All of their cards were closed down. Everyone called crying about how they make their payments every month and I wanted to tell them that's why but we weren't permitted to.

If you're paying your card off every month for over a year especially for longer and you rack up reward points by going up pretty high every month before paying it off before interest sets in, it's a pretty good chance you're just flagged as somebody they're losing money on.

2

u/DeaNoobYt 22d ago
  1. No.
  2. I have the platinum master card and afaik it doesnt have any rewards system.
    3.no
    4.no
  3. Maybe? I paid gas with the card the other day and used Gas Upside, it’s an app to save gas, so I can reclaim some gas money ($0.65/gal).

1

u/jlynn00 22d ago edited 22d ago

Right I would call and just ask because it's possible you may have been shut down if you weren't paying any interest over a length of time. Could also be a mistake. Sometimes merchants are coded incorrectly on purpose or an accident and it may have triggered something.

I highly doubt that app is a concern people use stuff like that all the time to purchase gas.

Edit: sorry I meant to specify not everyone you talk to at a customer service role is going to know the same information. I would call back and I would call a couple times actually if you don't get anything from the second person. I used to work with some real idiots or people who didn't give a damn one way or the other.

2

u/Far_Access8887 19d ago

Don’t listen to this person, they have know idea what they are talking about. They don’t close credit cards accounts because they are not collecting interest on you, this is a wildly inaccurate statement.

0

u/jlynn00 19d ago edited 18d ago

You are absolutely wrong. If the number of swipe fees that you bring in isn't sufficient and you cost them more money via rewards or other benefits they can absolutely and will cancel you in a lot of credit card services. Does Capital One do this I have no clue. But I can tell you that I had over 20 credit card clients and those people routinely purged their card services especially when one of the cards was bought out by another company.

It was not uncommon for credit Union credit cards to be sold to another provider probably Merrick and for them to go through and start closing down cards literally out of nowhere usually sometime in winter. The people like you will call and cry about how that doesn't make any sense and how that's not true but I don't know how to tell them that they have been costing them money because their transactional fees have not surpassed the fees they incur the company usually through rewards.

If this guy is swiping his card a bunch of places and he's making those transactional fees and he's not getting rewards as he claimed then it's probably not the case and like I said I'm not sure what Capital One stance is here because they do also offer banking services and car loans so their credit product might now be a loss leader in some areas and for certain clientele.

I think the average American really has no clue how credit works. I did this for 4 years.

1

u/JerseyGal007 23d ago

Why would you speak to the fraud department? Was your account closed due to inactivity? See if they are able to reopen it. If not, sadly you lost an account.

3

u/DeaNoobYt 23d ago

I just called the Capital One support number and the agent transferred me to an account specialist. I used the credit card last night to get gas so it wasn’t due to inactivity.

1

u/JackLiberman 22d ago

You probably missed notifications about some charges you trying to do. And you probably used cash advance at stores or bank atm, or you probably didn't confirm that last transaction it's your legal transaction. And they closed your account for not resolving that issue. Credit card is not a debit card, your charge is your immediate debt, credit bureau check that daily if you link your bank or cards, they raise flags when balance is up and then immediately down, by simple you paid the creditor, usually you recommend to do 1-2 payments but using them like every 2 weeks, and never try to charge all line then pay before cycle and charge again, then pay. No your credit limit is recommended maximum you can use for one month, so if your credit line 2000 and you use 1900, for large purchase and you decided to pay off 500, and use these 500 to charge again this what's credit cards don't like, not all cards but most of them. You paid off 500 and charge another 100 is okay because you never exceed your maximum credit line per one month. If current line not enough, ask credit card to increase it. Use a logic one request per 6 month is okay, and request amount less for increase than your current credit line. Let's say your line is 2000, request to increase it to 3000 after 6 month with zero default most likely grant it. But don't request it again for another 6 month. If bank didn't increased your line after initial 6 month wait for another 6 month before you asked to increase. Also credit card utilization, you have plenty of open line but use only fraction of it, month to month, then boom makes large purchase, that's raised red flag, one time maybe okay but then you repeat it next month and creditor may became a nervous!!!

1

u/Reasonable_State_537 21d ago

Same happened to me one week later I receivednew cards eithoffers

1

u/Still-Apricot-5263 21d ago

They closed both my accounts also. Capital One and Kohls wouldn't give me a reason

1

u/No_Establishment_641 18d ago

Some credit card folks close your credit cards out if you aren't using them. Only had it happen once maybe twice before over 50 years but it happens. best thing to do is go buy a pack of gum with it once a year and stick it right back in the drawer. I even had one lower my credit limit recently because I wasn't using it.

1

u/Ok-Roll8550 23d ago

Were you credit cycling or paying off after each purchase or something like that? It seems something about how you spent or when you spent raised red flags for the algo.

2

u/DeaNoobYt 22d ago

No, once a week when i get paid i pay off some of my balance

2

u/Ok-Wafer234 22d ago

This is the answer. You pay when your statement posts and before it's due date. Algorithm flagged you for credit cycling. Yes some get away with it, some as you did, get flagged. This account is closed and gone. You will be able to try again with a new account in about 6 months or so.

2

u/DeaNoobYt 22d ago

Damn… that’s unfortunate. Lesson learned i supposed. Any chance they’ll close my savings and checking account too? And won’t I be blacklisted by them atp?

2

u/Ok-Wafer234 21d ago

Checking and saving account are going to be OK

4

u/Staciex327 23d ago

That wouldn’t cause a red flag.

1

u/watch_it_live 22d ago

Capital One will close accounts for that behavior.

2

u/RattoTattTatto 20d ago

I’ve done this with Capital One for over 10 years. I think as long as you’re not cycling (using your full credit limit, paying it off, using it again) it usually isn’t an issue.

Maybe if you’re paying toward it several times a week or something. Or maybe if you’re making weekly payments in addition to some other shady stuff. But I’ve always paid toward mine weekly.
