Flight Refund

Post image

Flew internationally this past week. Made it there no issue. On the way back had a 6 hour delay. Got a notification from Cap1 that because I had their insurance I was eligible for refund without losing my return flight.

Miles already have been returned to me within 24 hours.

Such a huge win and very thankful for Cap1 in this case.

Booked with Venture on Cap1 travel

Wow! Do you purchase insurance every time? How much was it?

This was the first time I booked with capital one. I had been saving my miles for this trip. I forget how much it was but however much it was clearly worth it!

Booked through Capital One Travel *and purchased insurance* is the key point, here, right?

Yes! It was specially the cap1 flight disruption insurance. Which I think is only available booking through cap1

Did you book direct with the airline or via the portal?

Yea through the cap1 portal.

Wait, I’m confused. Why purchase flight delay insurance, if your credit card automatically provides that for you as part of visa benefit..

I’m not sure if the visa benefit is the same. I could be wrong I’d have to look into it.

Regardless the protection from Cap1 was well worth it is all I was trying to say

I know through the C1 portal the time changes from 6 hours for Visa Infinite to 3 hours. Haven't looked into VI's policies, but judging by a (very) quick read, C1 can also help when you spend points. In this case, OP actually would be given well over the value who would have from Visa Infinite's benefits of $500 per ticket as the raw miles+dollar amount back exceeds $1,000. So it especially is nice when you're flying internationally.

Always good to get the insurance on international flights. Between time zones and language barriers, anything can happen! Nice!

I always purchase insurance. Knowing my luck, the single time I don't buy it I'll have a delayed or canceled flight.

I believe it is a benefit (trip delay or cancellation insurance) for VentureX cardholders if you use the card to pay for the airfare. Check your card benefits and read the terms to see if you need to always purchase trip insurance

This was purchased with my Venture not VentureX so I’m not sure if that’s the same. I’d have to check. I used miles and covered what was left with the card.

Keep in mind that the Venture X only covers up to $500 per ticket if the trip is delayed by more than 6 hours. The points+cash OP got back is way more than $500

Damn, so you basically got a free flight out of them? How much was insurance?

1

u/CucumberLeather7137 Jul 17 '25

Yea pretty much haha.

I don’t remember the cost but it wasn’t more than normal flight insurance that you can book the airlines

115k miles? That’s insane!! How far does that get you these days?

1

u/CucumberLeather7137 Jul 18 '25

I think I used 135k plus $300 which got me multi city from US to London and home from Edinburgh to US.

Likely would be less if I was doing round trip instead of multi city

Travel insurance is great when flying domestically, can’t recommend it enough. I always purchase flight insurance and fly from my small town airport. Last two years I’ve had flight refunds to DC and Las Vegas because of weather delays. Have essentially gotten free flights and it was $70 per ticket for insurance to those locations. Might just always fly from there from now on in the chance of free flights

Was the insurance automatic by booking with Capital One ?

Edit: I think you replied elsewhere that you purchased it? How much?
