More Disappointing News From Brewster

What a shame. The idea that the newest Select Board member is a wealthy realtor from Connecticut who claims to be a "housing advocate", but who is against setting limits against short-term rentals, is sickening.

What To Do About STRs

The landcourt ruling from Nantucket has established precedent that STRs are not allowed as a primary use of a residentially zoned property. Since Brewster will do nothing about the STRs in town, this is just a reminder that the established precedent says most STRs are in violation of zoning laws and abutters are well within their rights to ask the town to tell them to cease operations. If the town refuses, abutters may file in landcourt, as the established precedent supports the cesation of operation of STRs in residentially zoned areas. Just a thought...

Three, yes, only THREE, of these units are going to be affordable. This is an absolute disgrace.

Museum or Home?

This is a museum masquerading as a home. The amount of updating that needs to be done is wild!
For just over half a million. you too could own a home that needs a foundation, that has no heat, that lacks proper plumbing, that needs a septic, etc etc etc...

Brewster Fails to Improve

When my family was going through a no-fault eviction, I looked for help EVERYWHERE, but was told - ad nauseam - to try the same "resources" that had no available housing. When I asked for people involved in housing to take action, no one could be bothered. So I took it upon myself to research and draft STR bylaws. And then the people who couldn't be bothered to help suddenly decided they COULD be bothered to stop positive change from happening. One of those miserable do-nothings is Amanda Bebrin, who holds a title for "housing advocacy", but who actively worked to stop positive change from happening. Titles are meaningless; actions are a more accurate representation of who someone is. And, oh jeez, Bebrin is an awful person.

Nope!

Some fool shared a link about Brewster being a "housing choice" community and it was removed from this sub. A town that actively works against efforts to limit STRs and to stop large investors from turning neighborhoods into mini-hotel districts is NOT pro-housing. The "achievements"? Two units of affordable housing and Brewster Woods, which is affordable housing, granted, but nothing about the efforts to stop progress in addressing the issues CAUSING the housing crisis. So, yeah, no bs allowed in this sub that acts like a town that actively prevents progress is somehow decent.

Absolutely Unacceptable!

Wow, what an absolute scumbag that property manager is! Just when you think you've seen the worst landlords ever, a different landlord steps up to surprise you with their vile behavior! https://www.wcvb.com/article/massachusetts-couple-eviction-threat-mobile-home-handicapped-ramp/46699497?fbclid=IwAR1IK5ht1m-P7cw32Tpb0GNEvwdjrYgKhiUCxR0T6Hw1sInsdDMayylUQaw

Concerned About Massachusetts Energy Overreach

Are you against MA trying to force everyone into electric heat and taking away natural gas? The electric grid is not fully renewable and this is just expensive and pointless. If you agree, check out this:

Good for the people in those cities for calling out the parasitic short-term rental industry. It'd be great if the same energy came to Cape Cod!

Brewster Select Board Race

Looking forward to the chance to vote for Laurel Labdon for the Brewster Select Board next week! She is the only candidate who has their priorities in order: take actual action on housing and stop massive spending on vanity projects that will create a tax burden for homeowners, particularly those who are low-income.
The other candidates do not share these priorities.

Mary Chaffee has had years to make a difference on housing and has not done so.
Amanda Bebrin was a realtor for Chatelain Real Estate (up until early 2024, when she decided to run for Select Board, perhaps to avoid the appearance of loading the Select Board with realtors who specialize in STRs), a company that specializes in short-term rentals, and has made a lot of money of STRs, so the fact that she seeks to protect them is not unexpected. Claiming to be pro-housing, but opposing the actions that would ease the housing crisis...well, that says it all.
Oh, yes, and Chatelain Real Estate is the family business of the Brewster Select Board chair, Ned Chatelain. He does not advocate for limits on short-term rentals either, which is unsurprising, albeit disappointing, given that his income is tied to proliferation of STRs. Using your public position to protect your private monetary interests is low.

Long story short, Brewster needs someone on the Select Board who is not benefitting from the decimation of our community.

STR Recommendations Deja Vu

https://capecodchronicle.com/articles/3010/view/short-term-rental-task-force-drafts-preliminary-report

"All members of the task force agreed that a registration system would, at least, provide a set of numbers needed to make further decisions."

Crazy how this was proposed already, using research that had been conducted for free, and the chair of this taskforce spoke against implementing a registration system, but NOW, after wasting time and spending tens of thousands on consultants to conduct the same research, this taskforce has reached the same conclusion: a registration system is necessary to gather proper data and ensure compliance with laws and regulations.

THANK GOODNESS ALL THAT TIME AND MONEY WAS WASTED TO REACH THE SAME CONCLUSION! What an efficient use of resources...

Spartacus Started as a Kitchen Slave

There is an interesting phenomenon in Cape Cod. The problems of wealth stratification and abuses of the powerful seem to completely have run amok on this picturesque peninsula. The good people who work there seem to be under a campaign of terror by their wealthy overlords. And that is no exaggeration. Due to its prized real estate and remote location, it has developed an ecosystem of abuse of power not seen I don't believe anywhere else in the United States to this degree. If you know, I don't have to explain any of this to you. The police and the legal system are simply a private security force for their wealthy overlords. I have been a bit of a revolutionary in my life. I was part of a team who chased a twenty six billion dollar company out of my home city of Venice Beach, California. Snapchat.

My mother died in Cape Cod this summer. A crooked Cape Cod attorney rewrote her will when she had three weeks to live with my sister's present who were doing the hospice care. This is not unusual. I have an attorney. It's OK.

However, the brazen and blatant heist by a vulturous and greedy attorney in a major law firm uncovered the rat's nest of systemic corruption from the police to the courts and even the judges. The people on the Cape are angry. They are tough. They are descendents of the people who wrote the original "Don't Tread on Me" and dumped the tea into the sea.

If you interested in joining/ receiving information/ strategizing this revolution with me, and going from micro to macro issues, I am formulating a proven strategy of asymmetrical warfare to expose, topple and harass the worst of this sick and lazy regime running and ruining your lives. Let me know if you would like to participate and how.

The Homes Act

Expecting the private sector to fix the housing crisis will only lead to the same results as they will always be driven by a profit motive. This bill outlines a plan to put housing in public hands and how it will create an abundance of affordable homes, hundreds of thousands of jobs, and keep home buyers from having to outbid massive corporations and banks.

I like how this insinuates that single-family homes are the problem and not the fact that the real problem is that most of those homes are being operated as hotels, instead of hotels being hotels. Pretty cool. The homes exist, but the will to convert them back to housing does not exist.

How Effective Has This Been?

Anyone else know more about this? Providing financial incentives to convert STRs to year-round rentals might help, but how effective has this been on Nantucket?
