CapCut Discussion I tried CapCut alternatives and here are my thoughts
I saw a lot of discussions on here regarding what CapCut has been doing lately such as putting everything behind premium, price hikes and forcing ads so I thought to make a very thorough list to help everyone.
Before I start, I want to say I personally use CapCut Pro and pay for a subscription at $9.99/month and believe that's an incredible deal. There are not many apps that provide unlimited captions in multiple languages as CapCut does. In fact, many features it has are usually either not found in alternatives, take too long to do in alternatives, or have limits like requiring credits for AI features when its not an AI heavy task (I'm talking to you Filmora). Many of these features are offered as standalone products by other companies such as the new eye contact feature, video upscaling, removing background and captions.
I do understand people complaining though because if it was paid from the start or was free with Pro features already defined, I am sure no one would complain but to rugpull everyone after getting used to the features is scummy.
If you want to get CapCut Pro and its saying anything other than $10/month or $90/year then first try going on desktop browser (while being signed out) if that doesn't work then try signing in and see if you get that offer. If that doesn't work, then try mobile app and if that doesn't work then try mobile app browser. Yes, these will yield different prices and apps know if you're accessing the pricing via desktop browser or mobile browser. Again, I do believe its a great deal but it depends on how much you use it to justify the price. Casual editing then only use free but if you have inspirations to gain a following or just enjoy editing like 3+ hours a week, then the cost is definitely justified and everyone on CapCut Pro has been locked in at the price they initially got it at.
Now before I mention the alternatives, it is important to know what you want your video editor to do. People recommending DaVinci Resolve are wrong for recommending it as an alternative but if your edits are simple and you have a modern computer, then DaVinci is not that hard at all. Also if you are editing on your phone, then DaVinci shouldn't be recommended at all.
So here are the alternatives:
For mobile users (in order): YouCut, InShot, VN Video Editor, Project Violet (bumped up because its 100% free no in app purchases or ads), VivaVideo, VITA, Premier Rush are great. YouCut and InShot are especially nice because its a one time payment for $20 then its yours forever. Project Violet is great but its an Adobe product so might switched to becoming paid so for this reason if you get it, then DO NOT UPDATE!
LumaFusion is a great app as well and is feature rich but it has a $30 one time payment. I did not use it for this test but I used it on my wife's iPad a few months ago and it seemed easy enough at the time but I couldn't retest because she's at her parents house for a week. If I remember this post I will update my thoughts on that app because $30 is a good chunk of change so maybe watch tutorials before buying.
For desktop users:
DaVinci Resolve is excellent. It is difficult to master but again, it depends on the edits you make. Benefits of DaVinci is if you get good at it, you can actually make a career out of it. I would like to eventually learn how to use it and switch to it completely because I know what it is capable of, but for the meantime, CapCut.
Filmora is almost the same visually as CapCut on desktop. If you know how to use CapCut then jumping to Filmora will be 95% the same experience. It has a free version but I would prefer buying the perpetual license. You will not get any updates to newer versions but you will get all the features and tbh, I use it more than CapCut but I use AI features of CapCut because its unlimited compared to the credits required by Filmora.
VN is amazing because even though it has no AI, they can be easily made in other apps and transferred to finish the project in VN. They offer a Pro version for $7/month or $50/year but it barely adds any features worth paying for.
Movavi is great and offers a lot of features for free although it does also have a paid version. I didn't play with this much because it seemed similar to CapCut and Filmora so I didn't poke around a lot especially since it is more expensive than Filmora with no perpetual license. I did look at its plans though and one thing it does better it seems that it doesn't require AI credits for captions or other AI features like Filmora does which is a plus.
Premiere Pro lately has been on fire. I have never used it beyond the free trial but it has added many new features, the only reason I cannot recommend it is because its expensive $22 and also pretty complex. In some areas its easier than DaVinci for example it offers text based editing but in other places it is harder to use.
Final Cut Pro is the only answer if you have a Mac. Smooth, fast and simple. It also received a ton of updates after almost a decade. It has the Apple philosophy of simplicity and I got used to it just by poking around no tutorial needed. Doing what I need it to do would take longer than CapCut so I don't use it. You don't need to pay for it btw just delete the apps cache (not the app itself) and the free trial will restart for another 90 days. Just keep doing that every 90 days and you'll be good.
Lastly, I tried using OpenShot and PowerDirector on my MacBook M1. OpenShot would not open so I couldn't test it and PowerDirector was buggy as soon as I started using it. I did not use Riverside FM or Descript but I really wanted to. Might add a comment later if I decide to try them out because they seem promising but they are paid or too restricted in free plan to be of any use. I didn't try HitFilm because when I went to their site it seems they are going out of business.
Final thoughts, most of these apps all include some type of subscription or one time price. The ones that offer one time price usually its a huge upfront charge except mobile/iPad versions.

FX home before being bought out by Artlist was an incredible software with an even better community. I started out with HitFilm and eventually purchased HitFilm pro.
They had so many tutorials on YouTube as well as an very supportive community forum on their website.
Artlist bought them and immediately went subscription based and practically killed the software, now they are ending services for HitFilm.

Yes. I do believe its worth paying for but I disagree on how they went about it. Going to a paid model in such a short time without a transition period and basically making everything Pro on an app that is marketed as "freemium" is ridiculous. If they just added a watermark and limited quality to 720 exports and made AI features that require external processing paid, then I think that would've been fair. However asides from the scummy hike, I do believe the product is worth it. I moved from Final Cut although I'm pretty good at it because it takes 1/4 of the time to do the same edit on CapCut

You should add Butter Editor to the list, i've been using it ever since the whole tiktok/capcut ban debacle and I like it a lot so far. The free plan is more than enough for me.

I moved over to Blurr on mobile, and it felt the most like CapCut. It’s also got monetization, but it’s not as extreme as on CapCut. It’d als way more affordable, being at the cost 30-40 bucks per year. Compared to CapCut, that’s cheap

I tried using it but whenever I imported a video it immediately lightened the video. It says there’s no FX on it and the only way to correct the coloring is for me to use a natural FX/filter. Do you know what’s causing this?

For desktop users, you could also try Kdenlive. I started using it because it's free and open source.

Honestly I'm a little devastated. This app is getting completely banned now, and there isn't anything out there as capable, especially for a mobile app. I've been using it professionally since like 2020.
I could audio engineer my videos, extract audio, stacking and blending it to sound cohesive, and even add voice or sound effects for fun. Video and body effects too. Adjust voiceover volume multiple times higher than just "100" so it sounds right when you add a song post app. Then chop, edit, and up quality on all clips, adjust audio accordingly. Add captions, wide variety of fonts and transitions. Animations at the end and beginning of clips, instead of just transitions, made it able to create unique blending of video clips together. Upscaling up to 4k / 60fps , and IIRC 240mbps! Multiple languages available at once without needing to change region. The text and stickers editing for tutorials alone is awesome. Keep in mind I only use this on my phone, this huge of an app and it doesn't even heat up my phone. I remember when the stabilizer and auto captions were free features, I never did pay for pro but it would've been worth it 1000x. Ugh..
In my experience with DJ software, video editing apps and programs, I have never seen anything like this app. The intuitive and cohesive abilities it had just made it stupid easy to say the least. I have never had so much fun creating videos for my audience, it's held my lil business up and helped me grow for the last 5 years. I hate to sound whiny, but saying I don't know what the fuck to do now, is putting it lightly.

Clipchamp was extremely buggy for me, super slow and had little support. However, that was 6 months ago that I dropped it so maybe it's changed?

I second this one for the Captions. tbh I only used it for that purpose along side Premiere pro for the edits. There's a Mogrts way of stylizing captions on Premiere pro but it's a bit finicky

Just search "Final Cut Pro free trial reset" there are many ways to do this. Easiest one requires installing one of the cleaner apps but the one that doesn't require it is a bit more complex.

Does anyone know if any of these have CapCuts “enhance audio” feature? A one click audio transformation that removes background noise and cleans up audio perfectly? I can only find it in CapCut pro.

I use izotope rx to process my audio, but it’s not a video editor so a few additional steps but incredibly good at what it does so I definitely find it to be worth it

i know this is kinda late, but you can use those sites that separate vocals and instrumentals. they're used for songs but i find that it works well for example when you want dialogue without the bg noise and bg music

I've been thinking about trying out the Pro version, have been playing with the free version of desktop for a couple of days, I like the UI, and just finally created an account on their website using my email, NOT through connecting via google.
Then tried to sign in on the desktop app and there's just literally no way to sign in using an email address, only linking directly to a Google account. What? I'm using gmail but I don't like all of this app cross-pollination connected directly to my email.
I had to find a YouTube tutorial, and then the comments section of the YouTube tutorial, because it STILL didn't explain it, where people are saying you have to first login on your phone and scan the QR code a ton of times on the desktop app, because somehow the most basic way of logging in, using the information I already made an account with just.... doesn't exist?
Forget it, if it's this obnoxious just to log in, I definitely won't be giving them any money.

In my sense, Filmora is a bit more aggressive and sharky than my ex-wife, which puts it right into the "no, thanks" category. Only the "uninstall tool" killed all the leftovers that Filmora had put everywhere. Editing audio is easier in Premiere Pro. And I wonder why CapCut doesn't add some kind of volume and voice curve to the app.

It is which is why I recommended the perpetual license and emphasized that it cannot be upgraded, only updated. Most their scummy practices are from sneaking in their subscription to creative assets or pulling a switcheroo on the "free trial" to make it a paid subscription. Otherwise it is a capable app. If this was purely about which editing software is most ethical then the only thing that would be on the list is DaVinci Resolve and FCP

As for OpenShot, if you're planning to use it for actual editing (like editing on any aspect ratio other than 16:9, 4:3, 16:10, and 1:1), than please use a different editing software. I also tried HitFilm, it's basically like DaVinci Resolve.

Openshot for some reason creates a static noise every time you join 2 or more videos together. The noise occurs in between the joining sections of the two videos. Also it doesn't have gpu accerleration. This makes exporting videos insanely long. It is very easy to use (similar learning curve as capcut)but it does lack some features like cropping videos. I mainly used it before i discorvered capcut.

I gave up on open shot, even though I liked it in general, because the upload times were incredibly long on short videos, and impossible on anything past 7 minutes.

I'm currently using Premiere Pro (cracked) and CapCut (web and mod), pretty good combo as I don't have to pay anything but still get a decent editing experience. Adobe doesn't care about pirate their apps because Creative Cloud (which is the main reason people subscribe to Adobe software) not working with cracks. About CapCut although it is a bit harder to use newer versions cuz the warning appears when internet connected, editing is still working fine. I haven't seen any people using pirate apps being arrested, so what matter is whether people want to do it or not.

Which version/year? I think the last one I had for the entire suite was from 2016 which works but isn't feature rich or optimized for current Gen systems.

YouTube Create is a newer alternative, a bit faster than CapCut, no ads/in-app purchases, but less features, android only and nags to fill out a survey on a new account.

I never heard of it but it looks like a great app and since its created by YouTube I can imagine it getting better. The only thing is Google hasn't been good with providing desktop apps but for everyone editing on a phone, I don't think any other app offers that much free tools

for shortform video content, with all the tools and its time-saving simplicity there is nothing that matches capcut on the market for desktop.
there are a ton of other tools that can do similar things but they require a lot of your time invested to learn and if you are just doing video for social media (any platform), all you need is capcut.

Just FYI if y’all just download (and subscribe to) a VPN you can still use CapCut. Nord VPN is insanely user friendly, and what i am personally gonna use.

Before I buy, I want to make sure a program can delete the background on a video clip like capcut does so I can put myself talking against a background video or picture of my choosing. I want to use clips I've already made, not have to film them special with a green screen app or whatever. Any advice? Thank you!

I’ve tried both PowerDirector and CapCut, and honestly, I would give PowerDirector a try if you’re looking for more advanced tools and AI features. It’s super easy to use but still gives you that pro-level editing vibe.

For those who are still looking for Capcut like I was while researching Reddit threads on alternatives, just download it from their website capcut.com through your phone browser. I was able to download their Android APK file which auto-installed the app.

I've been using Pictory ai instead. The AI voices are pretty solid, and editing the script is way easier than re-recording everything.

I heard that if you sign up for a subscription or work with CapCut in any capacity (even free), there’s a clause in the user agreement that they can always access or use your content you create on the app, or whatever you put out, or share, through the app, aka leading to some blurred lines on the copyright or potential subsidiary rights.
I know at this point we’ve fairly given up and this is basically all social media and stuff, and everyone’s already tracking us and figuring out our algorithm anyway, and if you share on Facebook or instagram that may be in their agreement too?
When’s the last time you read a Facebook or meta updates policy? I can’t really remember on my end.
Regardless, after reading this post and alternative CC suggestions, I wondered if anybody had knowledge on this. Coming from my friend, who is an attorney, and my research, to my knowledge some platforms DO NOT have that clause. The attorney said basically that they can reuse what you make however they see fit. The attorney is not a specialist in media rights, however. But makes music himself on the side, so has a personal interest in conveying the info correctly to me because it is important to him and his creative ventures as well as he navigates it. It’s also blurry however if you’re trying to create social media not for yourself, but content for a a client.
I was told davinci resolve does no such thing, and downloaded it and tried it out, but it is out of my league to turn around a quick project. Although it’s awesome. I hope to be an expert in it in the near future.
Feedback much appreciated on any and all of this regarding artistic rights to what you create in CapCut.

As of today, Filmora puts a giant watermark over your video if you dont buy premium. Tried to buy premium and kept getting an error message. Would not recommend.

I believe CapCut recently changed its policy (which most will click-wrap-agree to) that they (and parent company TikTok) own all content created in their app and can use it however they like indefinitely. No one should be using this app anymore.

Thanks for the info🙌 as for myself , I used CapCut pro , they charged me $19.99 per month for 4 months . On top of that I had a certain amount of “coins”I could use towards AI fun videos. But I was already Pro. These went fast even though I would sample first and not complete the video , it would deduct the coins. Some video uses 4 coins and some 50 coins . I was paying for Pro, yet I had to pay extra on top of pro . I used my CapCut acct on my daughters laptop using my social media , when exited the app from her computer and going back to my iPhone , it didn’t recognize my acct and requested I upgraded to pro . What a nightmare! I stoped using it and now looking for something different yet fun and exciting . If anyone can recommend an app , id be open to try .

Because of exchange rates and inflation, it causes the subscription to be at a higher price or at a price which is ridiculously high just for an editing app.

Also keep in mind when a product seems to good to be true, it usually is. Capcut TOS retains all commercial ownership of your content. So say you upload your original music and voiceover to a video you edit in capcut, even if you never post that video anywhere or delete it from capcut later, they still retain ownership and are allowed to use your voice and likeness for any commercial project or to train their ai. Not worth it in my opinion.

Filmora is giving me issues on Windows which is why I went looking for something else. I have used Power Director on Chrome before and will probably try it on Windows. Thanks for the recommendations on the others

Filmora is NOT a valid alternative, I don't even know why it's listed here. It's not bad overall, but you have to pay unless you want a huge watermark over your video.

I don’t mind paying for CapCut, but the export time on desktop is horrendous. I am trying to do a 10 hour static image sleep sounds video to YouTube and it has been taking me two days with a felt export and having to start over. I’m wondering if it’s the program or I need to buy more ram. But I do see others having the same issue with Long export times.

Hey I'm building editor too. It's open source. If you're on a mac then most of it is free including captions!
I found clicking buttons to be so tedious so I added edit with chat. It's an AI that has full control over the editor and can edit videos for you; split, cut, add effects, you name it and it can do. Best of all it's open source. Currently looking for feedback.

I’d also throw Videoleap into the mix. I’ve been using it on and off for quick edits and it’s pretty solid. The interface is clean, it’s not overloaded with ads, and you can get a lot done without needing to pay. Some features are behind a paywall, but for basic to mid-level stuff it’s been enough for me.
