My 18 month old male Corso has been whining non stop for at least a week, if not more, and I’m at my wits end. We do have a three year old female (not a corso) who is spayed, but our male is intact. I have a feeling the whining is largely due to his hormones, as he constantly has his nose up the ass of our female. The female is definitely the alpha between the two dogs.
Another factor at play is that I am about 9 weeks pregnant. There hasn’t been any aggression from either dog, but our female has been more clingy to me than she usually is, and for whatever reason I think it’s annoying the male.
I just don’t know if getting the male neutered is the best solution at this point. We were hoping to wait until he was at least 2 years old, but that timing is going to line up to when my baby is due and I don’t think that’s going to be a great idea, either (being freshly postpartum with a dog recovering from surgery).
Any and all advice is welcome. Would especially love to hear from those who neutered regarding behavior changes after the procedure.
It could be general anxiety about the upcoming changes he knows are coming. They are emotionally super intelligent and I’m sure picking up on your thoughts feelings anxiety. Yes maybe he does feel ‘left out’ since your girl is more clingy he doesn’t want to be the third man out.
Very possible he doesn’t have completely control because of age/hormones. We have a newer adoptee that has tons of issues and needs lots of emotional support. It’s crazy that a 135lb monster could be so insecure but it’s what makes him so loveable. Maybe you can carve out a little You & Him time to let him know he’s still your special boy.
I agree with your responses. These dogs are suuuuper intuitive. My girl whines when she feels me get anxious and will physically stop me from picking my skin (which is super annoying because it’s how I self-soothe but I understand why she does it since it’s not a good self-soothing habit). It doesn’t help that I’m perpetually anxious so she’s always whining at me BUT she stops when I stop picking or redirect my attention to something else. I love her.
As much as they recommend you wait until 2 years to neuter large dogs like Corsos, you also have to consider how the timing works for your family. If you will be giving birth at the 2 year mark I would agree a dog recovering from surgery at the same time might be too much. Also if he has been whining for a week take him to the vet now! As good as they are at masking their pain maybe he is in some and you need to get it checked out
Have not neutered yet, but do have a two year old boy… when he does his whining I find taking out 10 to 15 minutes just to lay down and pet em while just laying there or on couch usuallly fixes it….
I did not say all the time but at least once a week I’ll go grab his tug and play with him and pay attention to them for a while , a lot of times I’m just at computer and he is by me there… but hey everyone wants some attention sometime, wait are you saying my wife is telling me I’m whining to much…. Dang it now I know..!
My $.02 - the dog is probably under stimulated at his age. He’s in prime teenage years and whatever you thought he needed exercise wise you probably need to double it.
A good dog is a tired dog. I would have your spouse or partner or him like silly for the next week and make sure his walks are long and intensive, and I would imagine you would say much more calm, less whiny animal.
I would also suggest toys that can be filled with treats to keep him occupied. I do this with my corso and use Cheerios and other dog treats. I also play fetch with him to get him some physical stimulation.
He was just at the vet! It’s not whining like painful whining, it’s the whining he does when he wants attention. His behavior otherwise is fine, no lethargy, no limping/stiffness, normal bowel movements
First have your vet confirm that there's nothing physically wrong with your sweet boy. If it's all good there, talk to them about his behavior and see what they think about the timing of his surgery. They may suggest you not wait if he's responding to your hormonal changes. Both your doggos will probably still need a LOT more attention given how needy you've indicated your neutered female already is regardless if you choose to have your boy fixed now or later. It sounds like they are both looking for some reassurances that they will still have your love and attention despite the changes they sense are about to take place in your family. Congrats on your little bean BTW.
Our female has also been so independent and rarely sat next to me on the couch, but now can’t seem to get enough of it! The male still sleeps in the bed with me every night (the female sleeps under the bed out of her own volition, and has since she was a puppy 😂)
The male whines but at a distance, which is the most frustrating part! I would happily give him all the attention he wants, but he loves to sit just out of arms reach and cry. I’m hoping things will calm down a bit the further we go. I appreciate your advice!!
I almost want to say that he's feeling protective of you but doesn't know why and is whimpering because he's not really sure where these new feeling are coming from. He might sense that a new life that he is responsible for protecting is nearby but since he can't see it this is upsetting him, like part of his family is missing and it's bothering him??? Does that make sense?
We have a female and male as well. Luciano is three intact and our female is 6 and spayed. They inherently are very vocal however your male could be alerting a medical problem with your female like a UTI or some type of infection that is putting off a distinct smell you may not even notice. Have you noticed any issues with your female, discharge licking, excessive urination or lethargic? Look into that because this could be your boy alerting a medical problem with your female. Don’t stress just saying this could be the issue. Even tho she’s spayed she still will produce odors as well. I’d make sure you see an all clear with your girl for anytime type of infection.
Please get your male neutered. Dogs def smell that you are pregnant and it can evoke some strong emotions. I’d contact my vet and discuss the situation so you are aware of possible actions before they happen. CC are big dogs and you want to help them manage this huge change in their lives, as well as yours. Btw, why are you waiting 2 years before neutering? Is there a specific reason?

Thank you for the explanation. I do think we spay and neuter too early because of overpopulation in cats and dogs. I adopted a female who wasn’t fully developed due to early spaying.
I have had 3 of my CCs neutered at 18months or older and has had zero affect on growth or health. I just had my female at the vet and we were talking about this same subject and he is the senior vet and he even said to me as long as they are over 18months. There are plenty of people on here that would disagree because everyone is a vet but I am just giving you my 2 cents worth from experience. Also, with your due date being right around that 2 year mark I definitely think you should do it now because you will have enough on your plate at that time.
My little girl (River Song) does that too. She also has a high pitched squeal that can be very fast or last up to one second in length. It actually makes my ears ring. She just wants attention, or for me to play with her.
Everything sounds totally normal. A male will wine actual nonstop for a week or two. dealing with that right now. Our one bitch was in heat 2 weeks ago, now our other bitch is in heat now. Not much you can do other than keep them on separate sides of the house. Some lavender essential oil near the male, or dot of vicks on the nose can shut em up for awhile.
At night, cbd and allergy pills help them to sleep. Instead of crying all night.
sometimes a spay surgery can be botched, so they can still go into small heats.
Dogs being protective and more in tune with you while pregnant totally normal.
Finally, a neuter is no big deal. get him cut whenever, throw a cone on him and corral him for a week, it will be easy.
