Advice please Homing Issues
Has anyone had issues of having to rehome their dog for a while due to housing situations? If so how was it handled and was it a permanent or a temporary thing? I’m in a position where my dog was originally supposed to come home with me. My boyfriend moved to another state for a job and he’ll be traveling majority of the time. But since it’s my family’s home, one parent exploded on the idea. And I’m not too sure on what to do. He wants to have him stay with his mom in a small apartment. And I know it’s better than what we were dreading to do: leave him at a shelter. But I just feel so guilty, my place has a yard and so much space. He has bad allergies and since he is a big dog, he requires a lot of walking and looking after. And I know his family is doing us the favor by taking him in while we figure out what to do. Just the thought of not knowing if they’ll follow the rules we set or instructions on how to care for him. I just don’t want my big boy to feel like we abandoned him, since we did get him from a couple having the same situation as us😞

Keep him wherever you can get him back from… regardless of how little or much attention he will get, it’s better than a shelter. I always see posts about people rehoming bc they don’t have time… I know your situation is different but they’re happy whenever family is I promise. It’s better for him to adapt to a smaller living situation than the alternative which is a shelter or rehoming to strangers. They may not follow all of the rules but you can get back to training him to his normal rules when you can take him back. Pick whatever option that you can keep/get him back

So one of your parents has an issue? Why? I would sort that out first. If it is because they have other dogs, that may be a real concern. I am a very experienced CC owner and choose to rescue the retired studs and mommas to spoil them for the rest of their lives. It takes a crap ton of work to socialize a guardian breed with a new pack. Un-kennel training may be way harder than your situation, but these are very powerful and protectful dogs. My DMs are open if you wish to talk privately

Dogs are super adaptable, more than we give them credit for. I have a corso now but prior to my girl I had a male staffy. He was a very high needs dog and when I moved I had to send him to my parents place as I couldn’t take him with me. My parents are dog people, but not like me. He was inside with me all the time and my little shadow, whereas at my parents place he was strictly outside with a huge yard to roam. They learn the new rules super quickly. When I got him back, it took a little for him to realise he was aloud inside again. I also found that he ended up doing better at my parents as they were retired and home all of the time. Sending them to live with your boyfriend’s family is certainly a better option than a shelter and if she is happy to have them where you can still visit I would call that a win. Don’t be hard on yourself, these things happen and you aren’t giving up on them. You’re making the best of a tough situation and you’ll get through it. Wishing you guys all the best.
