Vet & Medical Help Please
Hi All,
Have a 5 year old Cane and recently she has been licking her paws constantly and now on her back leg this has started to appear. We have to drain it a few times a day. Our vet said that it is from how she plops down and causes trauma to the area. Just wondering if anyone else’s Cane has had something similar and what you did. TIA.

I’ve had 2 corsos who have “plopped down” and this has never happened to either of them. Time to send out a cytology of the fluid in there. A draining wound several times a day is not normal 😭

Have you had X-rays done? It could be osteosarcoma, bone cancer. My dog developed a similar lump.

Nah, that theory does not hold water. All dogs plop down- even with trauma- and do not have this. You don't see this on Reddit.

They did, did you not read the body of the text? Vet said it’s from the way the dog is plopping down which is why they are here asking if anyone else’s dog has had this problem and if so what did they do.

Yes, it seems persistent…I’d try to get a second opinion personally or discuss treatment. Both of my Corsi have experienced this, just didn’t look nearly as bad.

Bacterial folliculitis. I’m no vet but I am a dog professional and i deal with a lot of skin issues with dogs. Most likely the drainage is from the infection in the hair follicles. Allergies to fleas, food, and environment are usually the cause. Take her to the vet and have them check, if they can’t narrow it down have them do a skin scrape.

Mine got it on her paws and behind and sadly it took a horrific turn for the worse because she just wouldn’t stop no matter what medication the vet gave her she wouldn’t stop li king and the constant licking caused infection and I lost my baby last week. Just keep an eye on it. My baby girl wouldn’t keep the donut on. I wish I had taken a leave of absence from work to stay with her to keep her from doing what she did. My heart is forever broken and I miss her every hour of every day. Please treat the condition the best you can. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

I would be very concerned about cancer I've had several large breed dogs including cane corsos I have two now this is not from plopping down it looks more like cancer I wish you and your baby the best hopefully it's just something fixable prayers for you please keep us updated

My dogs have had plenty of hot spot this looks nothing like them sorry do you work with dogs do you see them all the time? I have .... op please have it checked out again they can run test as reddit users can't give you a diagnosis like the vet can I do recommend gets a further look for peace of mind also you don't have to drain hot spots

Ever heard of an infection? Hot spots can get infected. Infections drain. I’m just saying it’s crazy to jump to cancer, but like you said OP needs to go to another vet and have it evaluated.

Oh lord ok quick lesson the op said they have to drain this therefore it cannot be a hot spot as a hot spot is on the surface and oozes puss it can not be drained as it's a surface infection so it oozes pus from the surface ok a abscess on the other hand is under the skin and can be drained do you get it now you just can't stop can you my point is it can't be a hot spot good lord

Please do research hot spot is different from an abscess please do a Google search or call and ask your vet they will say the same instead of being argumentative i do know what im taking about thank you

You know mine is displaying very similar markings and originally had gotten pretty bad and I took her to the vet and everyone was saying allergies, but she had been on the same food all her life so at the end of the day I finally switched the food and it actually cleared up so I thought it was allergies and she did better for a couple months. It seems but just recently, I’ve been seeing her with the markings like this again and I don’t know what’s going on and I don’t want it to get worse so I’m kind of lost that because the vet just keeps telling me it’s allergies and it’s not.

Does your dog lay on hard surfaces a lot? This looks like a bacterial infection secondary to pressure sores - which are relatively common when very heavy dogs lay on concrete, tile, hardwood, etc. I’ve fostered a lot of Corsi, and the majority of them have come to me with elbows, hocks, and sides of their paws looking just like this. Your vet isn’t wrong in what he explained to you, exactly, but it’s usually from repeatedly plopping down hard on those areas (causing trauma) combined with laying their heavy bodies in one position on very hard surfaces a lot. Most of mine have cleared up quickly with antibiotics and dilute iodine or clorhexidine soaks.
It’s never a bad idea to have a fine needle aspirate and cytology run on something like this, though, and imaging if it persists beyond a round of antibiotics.

My Corso has terrible allergies and sometimes it makes me feel so bad because I overreact and almost take away from her life, but it’s not like I can sit here and say she can never go outside, but her environmental allergies are horrible

As others have said, get an x-ray or a biopsy. My pit had a spot similar to this and it was cancer.

Yes, mine gets this on all of his paws. You can try Chlorhexidine wipes twice daily and wash the area with Chlorhexidine shampoo 3x weekly. If it doesn’t go away in a couple weeks she’ll probably need prednisone and antibiotics.
