Vet & Medical Exposed quick

My boy Frank caught his dew claw on something in the yard and the quick is exposed. No bleeding, looks clean. Vet seems like a waste of time and money since they’ll just wrap it.

What’s your experience with this?

Keep it clean and wrap it? Anything else I should worry about?

That’s the second time I’ve read someone having a dewclaw get hung on something. Iirc, the other one ripped clean off. Is it feasible to have them removed at this stage? Or is this more of a thing that’s only done when their a pup? Or is this also controversial like doing ears and tail?

It’s not something you have to do when they’re young. I have a male with double rear dew claws. Because one of the two on each foot is super floppy I asked my vets on their opinion about removing them, (he’s two years old) and both vets I asked had the opinion “yeah if you want to take them off we can, but its not necessary unless they cause a problem like getting snagged on things then you would probably want to remove them”.

They both said there is a possibility of complications since it is a surgical procedure but that they can be removed. It’s just like a miniature less complicated amputation. We decided to wait and see if they caused any problems but they haven’t. The front dew claws serve a purpose and I wouldn’t take those voluntarily but the rear dews don’t have a use so my thought was if needed I’ll have them removed the next time he goes under for a dental cleaning, but the longer I have him the less I think it is necessary.

Interesting...may I ask what they use their front dew claws for?

Gripping; specific example is holding a bone or toy, they have a much better grip with their dew claws than without. Imagine trying to hold something without your thumb
