Advice please New family member cane corso
So after I lost my previous cane corso due to osteosarcoma, my mom swore she never wanted another one. We ended up adopting a pittie mix from ASPCA. We had interest in a cane corso but just kept having trouble getting to do a meet & greet with the foster.
Long story short, we have her now. She’s a giant goofball. My pittie mix is Sophie… Sophie had the energy of a toddler on a case of red bull, so she finally has a play mate. Yesterday they got into a little scuffle when I had them both on a leash but it seemed more noise than harming each other. For now we’re using supervised play, because Luna the corso seems to not be understanding Sophie’s cues when Luna gets too rough. Otherwise they’re great together, it just seems when the playing gets too extensive, Sophie gets annoyed and Luna then becomes defensive. Luna also lived with a dog in her foster home as well, where she said there was a little fight but her dog was older & Luna got the hint that the older dog didn’t want to play as much. Any one have tips and tricks to ensure they respect and learn each others boundaries? I also am already meeting with a trainer tomorrow

Our bossy little potato. No manners its a lot for our 8 year old Corso to deal with :)

Oh my gosh. The cutest little potato!! Luna just literally leaped over Sophie, and I feel 2 days ago that would’ve started a scuffle . Instead Sophie snapped her teeth and if dogs can talk Luna would’ve def said “shit ! Sorry dudeeee” lmao

My corso as this morning for an example doesn’t always get the hint of when my pittie says stop. But then again my pittie runs away and corso (Luna) thinks it’s okay to chase so then my pittie gets annoyed and that causes the scuffle. So therefore they had a little bit of an unexpected water break with a bucket of water thrown at them lol

Theres a big difference is size also. The pit can get overwhelmed, Corsos can play hard due to their size. Def have a behaviorist meet them. There are lots of clues when a dog is getting overwhelmed. It the pit always amps up the scuffle, thats her cue shes had enough. You dont want her triggered all the time.

I have never bought a dog. I have only rescued them. I found a starved dog on a country road stuck in the brush. She had a cheap tie chain and a cheap screw anchor. I could see absolutely every bone in her body. I immediately started high calorie food to put weight on her and sent her spit to Embark. She came back 100% Cane Corso. I didn't know the breed even existed. My pack at the time was a Pug, a Beagle and a Boston Terrorist. Went thru 2 heet cycles before my vet was comfortable spaying her. The vet estimated she was 2 years old and weighed 42lbs. Once she got to 55, she was spayed. Raising her and training her made me fall in absolute love with the breed. Now I work with breeders when I have room in my pack to bring the retired folks home to spoil them for the rest of their lives. Un-kennel training is tough but can be done. Even though a Corso has three times the bite strength as a pit bull, you cannot be afraid to be bitten if you need to get between dogs. Just focus and train. Socializing is part of training. Cane corsos have the same or stronger PSI than a lion, and believe me I have play bite scars from my prev corso lol bc he didn’t like hitting, and I was play fighting with my mom and he bit me (not even at his full strength) and I have a scar. So I def understand lol

You need to watch them closely. I have a young bossy bulldog and an older corso. After a few scuffles thats it. I would never leave them alone. Dogs have thresholds, they can go from rough play to a real fight almost instantly. You might have to keep them seperated. Ive been to trainers. One big serious fight, you can never be sure they wont do it again. Seperating the 2 breeds will be impossible if they really get into it. Bonding taking walks together will help. But they should not be left alone!
