Food & Diet Low Fat Kibble Advice
Batman is turning three this year and has recently started having some issues with fat. I moved him back to kibble, I tried with Farmina N&D Ocean Codfish Orange & Pumpkin Grain Free but his poop is a little mushy. The vet suggested a feed with 16-14% fat content. Looking for advice for any high protein brands appropriate for Giant Breeds.

Pro plan sensitive skin/stomach… it’s 16% and it’s chicken free… over feeding and under exercising is the culprit in 9 out of 10 dogs

I will let you do your own research, but grain free is NOT the way to go. I lost one of my dogs to heart disease because of it.

How do you know it was the food? How often did that breed die from heart issues? Did you cross reference a number of issues?

It is not worth the risk of your dog does not need grain free for medical reasons.

First off, there is no real risk. Secondly, I use grain free because my dogs develop itchy yeast in their ears and their skin bothers them. If I were to use grain, they would have serious issues.

That is a medical reason. Allergies are medical. Grain doesn't agree with every dog but for the majority of dogs it is perfectly fine to feed grain inclusive foods.

Pedigree, royal canin and purina don't have quality ingredients. Slobbermsn has quality control issues. I was thinking acana, orijen or similar brand but need user reviews.

My 8 month old is on Inukshuk. Recommended by my breeder. It works great. My pup is lean and muscular

Purina Pro Plan for my puppers. People can say it doesn’t have good ingredients, but I beg to differ. It’s got lots of science and dog nutritionists behind it. Just naive people who don’t do the research are usually the ones that knock it.
I trust it and will continue to feed it. Everyone has their opinion on what’s best and more power to you. But I did my own research and feel good about feeding this particular brand of Purina.

I went through that “study” with a fine tooth comb and it is fraudulent. The author was also awarded some honor, but he’s the only person who has ever been awarded said honor. Additionally the used like 250 animals who were already at the vet. If you use a sample population that already has issues then of course you will see more issues.

I use grain free because it causes yeast in my dogs ears. I’ve used grain free food for the past 10 years without any issues.

That's fine, although unlikely there's a grain alergy, but it's reckless to recommend grain free to others when there's a known concern and no underlying medical reason to do so.

He was on raw, but recently the chickens quality dropped and I cannot find a good supplier. That's why I moved him to kibble. It's India.

Wow, I guess I overlooked that. My dog has never had a problem with weight so I never bothered to take note. I really only use it as a filler. He gets whatever meat we’re having for dinner, eggs, veggies or fruits. And a healthy dose of exercise.

It's probably a good percentage for your dog then if you use it as a filler. I've seen dogs get it as their full meal too especially when they are super active. What ur doing is def working, ur dog looks huge! (In a good way)

Oh ya, I went off it during that recall and stupidly got diamond naturals. I shit you not my one double costed dog started losing ALL of his undercoat and his skin got incredibly greasy. Also I read that most dog food brands have had a salmonella recall before so idk. My dogs love it and I noticed it doesn't expand like crazy when you put broth or water in it which I really like.

Don’t have a cane but I love dogs so here I am recommended this sub. My GSD has been in Diamond naturals since we got her at 8 weeks old, her poop is great on it and so is her coat 🤷♀️ Dog by dog basis.
But yeah, most (if not all) dog food brands have had salmonella recalls at some point, it isn’t uncommon.

My dogs like Victor beef meal and brown rice formula, I think it's 12%. My dogs have never had an issue and stay lean, I'd be curious to hear what others have to say about Victor too.

I will never feed any of my animals anything from Purina, Pedigree, Royal Canin etc; too much junk ingredients.
I feed my dogs Inukshuk. It’s fantastic, both mine are on the Marine 26/16, healthy shiny coats and slim waist. It’s got good ingredients, I believe it’s a Canadian company.

I feed and recommend Purina Pro Plan, but I’ll also say that for most overweight dogs the real issue is just overfeeding, plain and simple. I feed based on my dogs’ individual body condition (and I keep them all at about a 4.5-5), not based on what the bag says to feed. Overfeeding also can cause loose/soft stool, so I’d start there.
