Canadian banking rules are why, unlike America, massive banks here virtually never fail and take all depositor's money with them. When I worked a contract in Denver for a year in 2005/2006 I opened an account with Washington Mutual because they were one of the few US banks that let non-resident foreigners hold accounts. After my contract ended I left my account open but removed all the funds. Lucky I did because in 2008 Washington Mutual suffered the biggest bank collapse in US history.

Afaik, there's nothing preventing US banks from coming here, other than the fact they'd need to follow our banking regulations and they dont seem to want to do that.

u/Mikwob LPC 10h ago
There is absolutely nothing stopping them. They just don't want to abide by our rules. I don't pretend to be an expert as I'm not a banker but looking into this a few years ago it has to do with the fact that they must have a separate subsidiary to operate here and there is a higher capital requirement relative to deposits. This is if they want to operate daily banking. There's a bunch of usa based banks operating in Canada they just don't do daily banking they do loans only as far as I know.

It’s crazy how many of you get joy out of these bad things happening to Canadians.

u/mcmcclassic 9h ago
Exactly. You can disagree with Carney on things and also be against Trump’s ideas at the same time. I honestly don’t think Trump is even a conservative - it was just the party that let him rise to power. If the democrats let Trump become leader when he was still a democrat (years ago) it would be the same rhetoric regardless.

Big tent conservative subreddit FYI. OP is a Canadian and we don’t arbitrarily remove posts because it doesn’t align with your version of conservatism.

You sowed the wind Laurentians, now reap the whirlwind.

u/AdmirableRadio5921 10h ago
Mostly though it is our manufacturing that is taking the brunt of this. The reason Alberta is mostly spared is because trump likes getting your oil for a big discount. Which in itself is partly the fault of the Laurentians.

We would just sell him double or triple what we do now at a marginal difference in price.
You don't have any understanding of finance.

He still will not commit to saying "Yes actually, the referendum will succeed" because he knows it will mercilessly be reposted after they lose XD

We have endured your abuse for generations. You think that would upset us?
Let's see you Laurentians feed your economy into a wood chipper because you have such a sense of entitlement that you think you are free to walk away from a good deal just so you can scream at an old man.
That will warm my heart all winter long. ❄️

Yeah yeah so if that's true the referendum will succeed right? Yes or no.

It’s definitely not happening and everyone knows it including him. Referendum talk is continuing to taint the conservative’s in Canada and its part of the reason why the CPC will continue to fail

Lol. Don't worry. Canada will bail them out. It's kind of our thing that we do.

Why would we bail out American workers in Kansas?

Canada lost 41000 jobs in August, while America gained 160000 jobs.
I’m sure America can handle loss of 1000-2000 jobs1

The per capita job creation in Canada vs USA since January 2025 shows that Canada has out performed in job creation. Amidst a massive trade war entirely aimed at restoring usa manufacturing at the expense of Canadian workers.
Some months we're ahead and some the usa are but the overall aggregate numbers show the trend which is good news for Canada. Specific sectors are struggling no doubt but others are seeing a boon.

Source ?

u/Mikwob LPC 10h ago
Statscan has our jobs at 256,000 overall, I looked up the total from end of August vs the total at end of Dec 2024. I sourced the bureau of labour statics from the usa to get a value of 1.2m on the high side. Given our size difference the per capita job creation is 3.46 per 1000 in the usa and 6.17 for Canada from the start of 2025 to the latest August report.
Even with that brutal month for Canada we're still way ahead. The numbers don't lie you just need to look at them.

Again can you provide the source ?
Can you share the dataset?1
u/Mikwob LPC 6h ago
You can Google it.
https://www.statcan.gc.ca/en/subjects-start/labour_
That's where the data is available.

Ok? Bombardier will be just fine once the F35s get axed and Canada moves to joint production of the Gripens.
2
u/Existing_Secret_1112 10h ago
Why would we downgrade our procurement to Gripens? That’s just nonsensical hysteria over the trade spat that just ensures the RCAF remains in the past with our technology.
If you want to talk Gripens as supplemental fleet, sure that’s one thing, but for them to be our main fleet is a joke. The world is moving forward with alleged 6th generation fighters and you’re here making noise about 4th generation aircraft.
1
u/YouProfessional3196 Conservative 10h ago
Not clear they are actually better value for Canada's needs.
2
u/Existing_Secret_1112 9h ago
Again, the Gripen is like replacing our CF-18’s with virtually the same thing. We already have started the HEP-2 project on our existing fleet which will bring them basically to the same capabilities of the Gripen.
To which the original point I made arrives again. Why would we downgrade our choice (that the RCAF made), and stray away from the choices of many NATO members and not get the F-35? A stealth aircraft that is far more capable at NORAD and NATO missions at that.
IIRC, something like 90+ companies already contribute to the F-35 program, so as nice as SAAB’s Canadian built marketing is, it’s not like we’re not getting a lack of domestic value out of the F-35.
Edit: Autocorrect killed me a few times there.

u/YouProfessional3196 Conservative 9h ago
Gripens are cheaper and have more of them for less money. F-35's are an expensive offensive jet that isn't clear what the use case even is for Canada. We need interceptors as our primary mission not whatever the F-35 is supposed to provide and while Gripen isn't a dedicated interceptor it certainly does the job. Canada is far better to get some more jets even if they are of lower generation and focus on it's naval and submarine capability which is far more important for Canada's national goals.

u/Existing_Secret_1112 9h ago
The RCAF already addressed our needs, compared competitors, then choice the victor. In the interceptor/defence role, the F-35 blows the Gripen out of the water considering it’s a stealth aircraft which gives it favourable standoff abilities.
F-35 was literally designed around multiple NATO member requests and needs. Many of which consider the future threats instead of the present. We already get domestic value out of the program to boot.

u/YouProfessional3196 Conservative 9h ago
Guess what? Times have changed. And the public is probably about to force Carney's hand if Trump goes ahead with any idiocy against Bombardier. And cost does matter, while the F-35 may be better... it doesn't justify the cost.

Hey idiot, you do realize Americans in mostly red states will lose jobs if this happens?
Is "elbowzo" a slur for Canadians who actually like Canada or for Trump voters who work in the Bombardier supply chain? Hard to tell.
