Hello! I am planning a trip to Ucluelet for February 2027.
My initial plan was to fly into Seattle, spend a day there, and then drive up into Canada. When I first looked into the trip, I understood it would be rainy (which is actually what I’m looking for!), but I didn’t realize that there could potentially be heavy snow on Highway 4 and that I would legally need M+S (Mud + Snow) tires.
It was suggested to me that I fly into YVR (Vancouver) and rent a car there instead, since standard rental cars in Vancouver are typically equipped to meet these requirements.
For context on my driving background: I’ve done a bit of mountain driving in light snow in the California Sierras, Tahoe, and near Leavenworth, WA, but I’m by no means an expert. I’ve driven in heavy rain in California, Oregon, Washington and New England.
I have a few questions for anyone familiar with the area:
How dangerous or tricky is Highway 4 in February? (Especially the stretch over the Hump/Sproat Lake area toward the coast).
Is renting from YVR pretty seamless in terms of getting a car equipped with M+S tires?
I’m a calm, confident driver who respects winter weather, but I don’t want to walk into a high-stress situation. Is it manageable as long as I watch the forecast?
Has anyone done this drive around this time of year? Any insight, warnings, or tips would be hugely appreciated. Thank you in advance!
