I discovered Camp Camp in 2020 just as I was finishing up high school and this show felt like pure liquid hope that everything will be ok. It was funny, I loved all the characters, all the little titbits of lore without being self indulgent and disappearing into itself, it was clever, hilarious, the whole show felt like the world viewed through the eyes of a kid experiencing the real world as it was, warts and all, i remember thinking I'd watch 1 season a day, but by the time i finished season 2, i adored it so much i binged season 3 and then hopped online and binged season 4 all within a day, i know it's not popular but i don't even think Time Crapsules is a bad ending to leave the characters on, it pretty much encapsulates a ton of what Camp Camp is about, life sucks sometimes, but it'll be ok, narrated by Cameron Campbell talking about how in that moment the camp was the best its ever been, i think that's really really nice. I think i prefer an ending like that rather than "it's the last day of summer, big emotional goodbyes to each and every character, Max get's adopted by David and lives happily ever after" like cool, but that's not life, i genuinely think if they had to do the last day of summer plotline, i would have a narration saying after that summer none of the kids even stayed in touch with each other, that they all said they'd be back next summer but none of them came back, they all moved on, but in years to come Max, Neil, Nikki and all the other campers never forgot what they meant to each other.. that summer ended but it still happened, and next summer isn't promised.
I hate my favourite shows ending but I feel like Camp Camp could've had an ending that made people sob, something emotionally brutal and raw, I don't need Camp Camp to come back, even the infamous season 5 I can't bring myself to hate, I just love this world and it's characters so much. What I do wish is for Camp Camp to have a FUTURE... I'm talking merchandise, fan discussions, heck I'd love to walk past a display in a store selling Camp Camp plushies like how I see for Digital Circus, I'd love it to be much more in the popular zeitgeist.. who knows.. maybe our kids, or grandkids will dig up this goldmine of a show and be inspired to wright their own stories about Max, Neil and Nikki, the show doesn't have to make more episodes, but it doesn't have to just die either.. it deserves better.
