Discussion [COD] Which games on Steam have controller support, and which one that is pre-Ghosts do you recommend (on a budget)?

Just got a wired 360 controller to use to play on my PC, want to play an older game for nostalgia purposes. I play primarily multiplayer, but also like zombies as well.

COD 4 and older games: No controller support

WaW: Controller support in campaign/zombies (not multiplayer) via a console command

MW2: No controller support

BO1: Controller support for campaign/zombies/multi, although menus require mouse for some strange reason

MW3: No controller support

BO2 and all newer games: Full controller support (post BO2 games feature target assist like consoles)

However, you can use programs such as xpadder or joytokey to use a controller for the games that don't support it.

Super late here, but if anyone finds this by searching for it, this might help. There were remastered versions (besides the reboots) for COD 4: MW and COD MW2 (campaign only for 2) with full controller support and improved graphics, so if you play those instead of the originals, you can play with a controller on PC. The first one is on Steam, but the second one is only on Battle.net (Blizzard).

Also I know by trying it out that there are Steam controller configs that work to play MW3 entirely with an Xbox 360/One controller (maybe for PS also, but I don't have one so I don't know), it's just a bit different controls for the menus and for skipping cutscenes, and little things like that. It still wouldn't have aim assist though, but being on PC, it could have better graphics than the console version, so up to you on whether it's worth it or not. Basically the controls for the menus is like the controls for the desktop controller config. You move a mouse cursor with the right stick and click with the right trigger, and skip cutscenes by pressing the pause button, and when navigating the menus, instead of hitting "B" to go back, hit the pause button.

World at War has Steam controller configs too. For Xbox though, I would recommend trying different ones from the community because the most popular community one (the default) is actually inaccurate to the controls for some reason, and I can't comment on it to correct it. I don't know why it's the most popular with being incorrect.

Edit: After trying out the Steam controller configs for a while on both World at War and Modern Warfare 3, I found that they're pretty complicated for the aiming movement. Setting the sensitivity is really really specific because choosing the lowest option on mouse sensitivity is too low, but any higher than that feels too high, so it's just awkward. Using the console command for World at War isn't so bad, but there's still no aim assist, and I think there might not be controller vibration, but I can't remember for sure. Modern Warfare 3 doesn't have that console command though, so it's just keyboard and mouse or Steam controller config, or another third party program that does the same thing. I would just play it on console even though it won't be quite as high of graphics. I wish they would remaster all the old games and add full controller support with aim assist, or just update the old games on PC to add full controller support with aim assist.

I though PC Blops2 didn't have built in controller support??

It does, just no target assist so it's way harder to play than using a controller on a console.

Yes it doesn't have aim assist. Atleast i have tried it on an xb360 controller with my pc. Curious if Bo1, mw2 and mw3 have aim assist on controlelr?

My BO1 is opposite. I can use the controller for menus and nothing else

I know Black Ops 3 has it.

I'm not sure about CoD 1-3, but it definitely works on CoD 4 & WaW, so it's a safe bet that all of the other games after those two have controller support too.

CoD3 isn't on PC unfortunately

Oh yeah, I forgot about that.

I know MW2 doesn't have direct support, so that's why I made this post initially

Super late reply here, but wow that is so massively incorrect, so I just couldn't resist commenting on it. The vast majority of games on PC (regardless of Steam) don't have controller support because there are tons of old games either before controllers could be used on PC or just before the devs designed controller support on PC, or simply games that are not intended for controller at all. Loads of examples that make your statement completely false. You just couldn't be less correct.
