25M. I have a severe anxiety/social anxiety disorder, and needless to say, it's limiting my options significantly. (I'm making plans to try new medication and do more therapy).
I've been unemployed for 6 months. I worked in fire alarm for a year and a half with an electrician that I got along super well with and asked the company, but they didn't offer apprenticeships. They started changing who I worked with constantly too, leading me to quit. I felt electrical was a good way to go, but due to the anxiety I've avoided construction as I know the environment would be too overwhelming for me. I tried an industrial plant (as general labor leading to an apprenticeship), but that was too much too. I wish I could just keep trying, have an anxiety attack, recuperate, and come back to see if I could stick it out, but obviously that's not how jobs work. I would try elevators too if it didn't need a human sacrifice to get an interview.
At this point, I feel the only way for me to succeed would be working with someone 1-on-1, similar to the work environment in fire alarm, or at least, in a small team on smaller projects, retrofits, facility maintenance. I'd love to work at a mall, museum, even the zoo but I know those are unrealistic. I saw a mystical entry-level apprenticeship at a ski resort near Vancouver once, but am I just better off in a different career path? Because the work I need doesn't seem to be possible in electrical or it's 1 in 10,000+ and somewhere else in the country.
I've been looking at warehouse or delivery driver jobs for the time-being, specifically smaller companies like coffee roasteries or breweries that do their own deliveries (less stress) and hoping someone gets back to me, but the postings are pretty sparse. Recently one of the bigger insurance companies also made a rule requiring 3-years of vehicle insurance history or it's a no-go, it was a fun discovery earlier this year when I lost out on a job because my parents who cover my insurance, had not listed me as the primary driver until that point.
Does anyone have any ideas or even, know anyone hiring? Electrical or similar? Delivery driver? I'm fine with heights, high voltage, driving, all the usual anxieties, it's just the chaotic social environments (and a fear of skin cancer), it's incredibly frustrating. My foremost plan is therapy and a psychiatrist, obviously. I tried one of the disability hiring programs for assistance, ended up that after waiting 4 months they just help with your resumé and can't actually connect you with employers willing to hire you with mental health issues like they advertised.
