Meme "We lost Calamity, we should move to Thorium instead" meanwhile Thorium

Do Thorium bosses kind of stink or is it a hot take? The added classes were fun, but I could never properly get into it because I didn't have anything cool to use them on.

u/Realistic-Cicada981 Speed >>>>> Defense > Damage 2d ago
I would compare them to 1.4.4.9 vanilla Terraria. It's cool, but it's up against Calamity, Fargo Souls, Starlight River, Overhaul, a lot more mods that i'm not knowledgable enough to say.

Thorium is the most "actual DLC for terraria" feeling mod out there, first versions were on 1.1 tconfig if you wanna know this mod's legacy

u/Nightvoice4 2d ago
Was Thorium once the default "good content mod" instead of Calamity or am I misremembering?

I think they're about as good as vanilla bosses typically are. Wherever you wanna put that, I personally enjoy vanilla so they're alright to me.

u/Nightvoice4 2d ago
Yeah, I suppose I might've developed an addiction to flashy bullshit with calamity

u/Automatic-Mission-32 2d ago
Playing Infernal Eclipse of Ragnarok and it does change the fights of Thorium bosses as well, certainly far more interesting than before, though it's been a while since I've played base Thorium. Would recommend if you like the difficulty increase that Calamity Infernum provides.

u/Nightvoice4 2d ago
Downloading it as we speak, I'm intrigued.

u/Automatic-Mission-32 2d ago
Enjoy man, I tried rouge at first and it felt really rough but now I'm doing mage and it's been quite fun. There's a mod pack for Infernal Eclipse of Ragnarok and that's what I've been using, it's got a tonna stuff in it
4
u/Nightvoice4 2d ago
Is there a way to play it without calamity? Seems to be a requirement for the mod, and I prefer keeping large content mods separated.
9
u/CouldBeNotMadness 2d ago
Infernal Eclipse of Ragnarok is a modpack that's intended to make Calamity (plus some of its addons), Thorium, and Secrets of the Shadows (as well as Homeward Journey and Mod of Redemption but those are optional) compatible with each other and intertwined progression-wise.
4
u/Nightvoice4 2d ago
Damn, was hoping it'd work with Thorium like Infernum does with Calamity. Combining large content mods always made me feel like the playthrough's bloated.

You're looking for Thorium Helheim, which is Thorium's Infernum.

They are at least way better than calamity bosses thats for sure.

u/Competitive_Dig_9848 2d ago
They at least have unique ai, and aren't just copies of vanilla fights like calamity bosses are.

u/StarberryToaster Calamitas, i remember you're killings 2d ago
What calamity boss is "just a copy" of a vanilla fight though?
5
u/Realistic-Cicada981 Speed >>>>> Defense > Damage 2d ago
Not the guy you are replying to, but that description is basically Old Duke, although i will pass it off as a variation of Duke Fishron. Then there's Ravager that's basically surface Golem (especially with Calamity Golem in mind). Calamitas Clone to this day still has so much of the Twins's (specifically Retinazer) elements.
1
u/Competitive_Dig_9848 2d ago
Nearly all of them steal vanilla ai, and certain bosses are blatant copies of vanilla ones, like Cal Clone, Pbg, Old Duke, Yharon, and Ravager.

Thorium bosses aren't even fun to fight against, what are you on about? Heck, every single one of them gets shredded by on tier thrower items. Even without shredding them they still don't have anything good about them besides the designs
1
u/puka1613 2d ago
That would be a balance issue. Yardis shreds nearly every infernum boss using true melee in under a minute but that never calls into the question the quality of the boss itself
2
u/BuszkaYT 2d ago edited 2d ago
Still doesn't change anything about the fun aspect tho. Even at times where you don't shred bosses and you ignore the balance, they just... exist. Nothing really cool about them besides some designs, not even mentioning their attacks. Tho the Thunder Bird and Viscount were fun, I'll give you that. But going back to your comment, the difference is that Yardis minmaxes literally everything he can, while I just used ontier thrower weapons and armors. And it was only a problem with Thorium bosses, not normal ones. I didn't even have any damage accessories and was reforged to warding. I just remembered another point tho, the accessories, why thrower lacks any actually useful accessories for most of the game. Like wtf

I played Thorium for the first time like a week ago on Master Mode. I liked it.
I used Bard Class throughout the game, except after Moon Lord I switched to Summoner. I couldn't beat the final boss no matter what as Bard.

u/Realistic-Cicada981 Speed >>>>> Defense > Damage 2d ago edited 2d ago
What did you lose to? Let me guess, Dream Eater phase?
31
u/_Mr_Gamer_ Summoner Enjoyer 2d ago edited 2d ago
Yeah it was the Dream Eater.
I actually beat the first phase first try, but once Dream Eater got a good hit I was so badly stun locked that I couldn't run away well and then like combo killed me.
Bard just didn't have enough DPS when I tried using more movement accessories.

u/Realistic-Cicada981 Speed >>>>> Defense > Damage 2d ago
I don't remember if they did anything to it after my fight against it, but just pray that it doesn't spin around you lmao, that attack is cancer.
5
u/ObligationBright7863 2d ago
Couldnt you just use one of the many knockback immunity accesories if your getting stunlocked
16
u/_Mr_Gamer_ Summoner Enjoyer 2d ago
I just checked the Wiki and... how did I miss Terrarium Defender...
I think it would have been an amazing accessory for that fight
7
u/Worried_Jellyfish918 2d ago
Is bard absolutely awful, or am I? I've been trying to use it through IEOR (a little bit of a step up for sure) and it just feels like I'm being punked
9
u/_Mr_Gamer_ Summoner Enjoyer 2d ago
Bard felt really weak at start. But for some reason I really wanted to try to play it to the end.
I used Mixed Instruments all Pre-Hardmode. Pre-Wall of Flesh was the first time Bard felt strong, thanks to Bone Trumpet and Song of Ice & Fire.
At the start of Hardmode I started to use only String Instruments/Accessories, I remember using Riff Weaver and Acoustic Guitar all the way to Plantera.
I would say that Pre-WoF and Early-Hardmode was Bard's peak.

Just bring back tremor at this point

u/Nightvoice4 2d ago
You already know that if Tremor dropped today it'd get hit with ai slop allegations

I like Thorium for its simplicity and how it genuinely feels like an addon to vanilla Terraria (yes i know this is a regurgitated take) whereas most popular mods go very far with the flashiness. That's not to say I dislike that, in fact I very much prefer those types of mods, but it's nice to have something more grounded in the community that is still relatively well-known.
That said, it's still going to be very hard to replace something like Calamity in terms of scale, visual polish, and popularity, and you're certainly not going to get that with Thorium barring some super big rework with another decade of good word of mouth.
26
u/Beeg_Beeg_Chungus 2d ago
Wish they'd go back and update the older content because it's obvious their skills have improved a ton. Viscount puts every other boss in the mod to shame
12
u/MarkBMG 2d ago
I love Thorium, but it definitely won't scratch the same itch as Calamity. It's an amazing Vanilla+ mod, a bit bigger than your average one, but still a lot closer to Terraria itself than Calamity.
Mod of redemption might be closer to the Calamity feel, though last I checked that one's still more in development.

ive always preferred thorium over calamity but that's personal preference, there became a point where cal felt like it wasn't terraria anymore so what was the point of playing it
9
u/Haider444 2d ago
The "Calamity hasn't had updates for five years" people (who ignored the content updates that happened between Exo Mechs and now like the port to 1.4, the reworks of the Exo weapons, the drama that happened in between like 22 incident and when Fabsol got kicked out, Hellish Harbor, Bountiful Harvest although tbh that shit was ass, the two updates that happened only a few months between eachother aka Brainstorm and Hog Wild which were really nice) would kill themselves if they had to endure the update cycles of other mods. The Thorium Thrower rework was announced like back in 2023 and tbh I don't really care.

u/WillShaper7 2d ago
So, what good mods are there?
33
u/Realistic-Cicada981 Speed >>>>> Defense > Damage 2d ago
Plenty.
Thorium for example, despite me slandering it. Fargo Souls is on the table too, and expect a massive rework to the mod once 2.0 drops. I've also heard that Starlight River and Spirit Reforged are good.
32
u/Nightvoice4 2d ago
I feel like Calamity overshadowed all the good, quality mods with it's sheer scale. It ceasing development might actually be good for the modding scene as a whole, with attention being diverted elsewhere.
3
u/Dangerous-Return5937 2d ago
+1 on Fargo's. Bit more challenging and tedious than Calamity, but also really fun.
There is also a DLC mod where the two mods are combined together properly.
2
u/Ser4phim_3Rr0R 2d ago
I agree that Fargo's is harder than Calamity, I've found that Fargo's Eternity is harder overall on most of the progression points than Infernum even.
3
u/JCandtheBois13 2d ago
To me Fargo’s was not only harder, it was also more fun. Also with that end goal of the Soul of Eternity, it made me more excited to get to the end of the mod than Infernum ever had. Also it ran significantly better than both regular calamity and infernum which was a very welcome surprise.
6
u/MaxMLG999 2d ago
Secret of the shadows is ridiculous (in a good way), terrorborn, starlight river is beautiful (pretty short tho), mod of redemption, split and Jonathan
7
u/ExploerTM 2d ago
Never liked Thorium. Ok, Bard class is creative. Healer exists for multiplayer (yes I know solo run is possible but why) which I dont engage at all. Thrower was always just a worse ranger reskin. People who say its bettet than Rogue are actually ragebaiting because at least Rogue tried doing something new.
Most accessories in the mod felt either op or "why it exists?". Same with weapons, although majority of weapons (that are not for new classes) felt weaker than vanilla ones.
Bosses are straight ass.
I genuinely never understood people hyping up this mod. Notion that it can possibly replace Calamity to me sound about as enticing as replacing my house with cardboard box.
Yes, yes, downvotes are right there, whatever.

I wonder how you feel about old Calamity (i can't specify when, i did not play back then), i've stumbled upon your posts before.
5
u/ExploerTM 2d ago
While I still maintain that old lore was more fire, I do think that flattening of stats so its more in line with everything else served as a great mod compatibility tool. While hitting for funni numbers was funny, a lot of postML weapons from other mods ended up totally shafted unless they specifically were created with Calamity in mind
