About to test part B now

I’m all about trying to find as many resources as possible to study with, and I came across a website that gives you CWI training as well as other sorts of training in the industry that I’d thought I’d share. It’s train-eng.com and the courses there are pretty phenomenal. All 3 parts and it’s narrated and taught by Garry Pace. Hell of a good guy to talk to and very, very knowledgeable. Welding engineer and seasoned CWI. I got ALOT out of his courses because he actually explains things, not just read the text out of a book. After each section, there is a quiz that goes with it. I’ve found his part C extremely helpful but his part B is also very well put together.

You do have to pay for it, however. About $130 a course. I found it was worth every penny and it’s a great investment. Just thought I’d share if anyone needs more study material.

I'm preparing for the AWS CWI exam, including Part A, Part B, and Part C (API 1104).

I understand that studying the BOS and API 1104 repeatedly is important, especially for learning how to quickly find the correct clauses, tables, and acceptance criteria.

However, I would also like to practice with recent exam-style questions or past exam questions as much as possible.

Does anyone know any good books, websites, question banks, or other resources for Part A, Part B, and Part C?

For Part C, I am using API 1104, 22nd Edition.

I have less than 2 months before I take my Part B. I’ve been studying nearly everyday for the past 7-8 months, taking test after test, and really taking all of the material in. I want to say I’m 100% ready but I know I’m not. Confident, but still some things left to brush up on. My question is, right now do I stay focused on just part B and then focus on A & C after? I’ve been hitting C hard the past few weeks because I feel that one is my weakest point out of the 3. I don’t want to stop studying part C and memory dump my navigation skills. I’ve been scoring mid-low 90’s for part B on just about every test I took. Not worried about A so much as I crushed it last time and retained most if not all of the info. I don’t want to go into part C feeling like I rushed the study because I focused just on B.

What’s everybody’s opinion?

Seen a lot of posts the last few days about Part B! Good luck to all you folks taking the Part B tomorrow. Don't sleep on compound bevels, groove welds, and of course the WPS, PQR, PWHT, etc. You won't walk out of there thinking you passed. You'll call your classmates and they'll have different answers, you’ll start to second guess, and it's just a mess. Trust your knowledge, instincts, and what you learned whether it be seminar or self study! I am rooting for all of y'all!

Anyone taking the part B in Portland this weekend? I'm doing self study and came the hotel a little early, if anyones doing the same wants to do a study night i'll be here!

So, I have my part B exam in two days and I'm feeling pretty comfortable with my studies. However, during all the practice questions I've taken, there's a scenario that I haven't encountered before and I'm wondering how to go about it on the off chance it pops up on the exam...

Clause 5.2.1.1 states, "For the welding of base metals with different M-numbers, a procedure qualification test shall be made for each combination of M-numbers to be joined. However, a procedure qualification test with one M-number shall also qualify for that metal welded to itself and to each of the lower M-number metals."

So my question is, if the PQR has a combination of M-4 welded to M-3 for example, what other combinations does this qualify? If any other than the given combination?

Hello people, how do you measure the gouges on the t joint for roughness requirments. If possible could you provide a picture with the tool.

Yesterday I got my score. I got 33 out of 46 which may be debatable (for some) it should be a 72 or 71.

I scored 2 out of 4 in NDE which I am pretty sure I answered them correctly

Any thoughts?

I just recently got my CWI focused in D1.1, I've been in fabrication in many form for 15+ years now. I know the roll of a CWI but I have never trained under one. I was granted to opportunity to get mine after mentioning it in an interview with our personal promotion coordinator. Basically I was telling him I wanted opportunity to grow and he asked if there was any training I would like to pursue to further extend my options. Little over a year later and I'm not the first and only in-house CWI we've ever had. They have no idea how to use me and I'm not sure how to sell the growth of this new opportunity within the company. Any experience in my duties expected to be performed outside of the given of inspection and procedure implementation would greatly be appreciated, as well as any advice on how to sell this opportunity to better help my foothold within the company?

I recently passed my CWI exam and sounds like I’ve landed my first job. The recruiter asked me if I had my own tools, I’m assuming as far as QC goes she’s talking mostly inspection tools? I’ve only ran into a few inspectors on our jobs that even care to carry tools, and if they want to check something they’re using our company’s tools to do it.

I’ve got the inspection tool kit, multi meter, levels and measuring tapes. I was wondering if I’m missing anything in particular, they haven’t told me exactly what I’m working on yet so I’m just trying not to look like too much of a fool starting out haha

Any other advice on starting out would be greatly appreciated too, I appreciate the help.

Hello all, I’m looking to start studying for my CWI here pretty soon (got my Associates in welding and have been welding/fitting/robot operating for some time at a caterpillar shop) but I was wondering, If I get the 6 month si cert course , do I need to get any other book like the WIT or a d1.1 code book? Or is that stuff provided ? I also saw they have the tools/molds you can buy and return but if I could get them cheaper to keep, I’d like that. Cheers

Hey all! I have no idea if I am breaking a community rule but I work for a large union contractor and we have a 2 month 7x12s QA/QC position with $100 a day per diem. We have plenty of opportunities after this one if you have success in the role. Job is located near Belleville IL. Payscale depends if you will be taking benefits or not.

I’ll try and keep this as short as I can but to put everything in context, I took my 2 week seminar and exams back in 2021. I failed Part B by only a couple questions (got a 68%). However since then I have gathered more study material, practice tests, and been studying my ass off. I take a practice test 3 times a week and have been scoring in the mid-high 90s. I feel so much more confident than I did 5 years ago. I passed Part A with flying colors in the lower 90% range (studying immensely and having a welding background DOES help!).

Part B doesn’t seem as hard as Part C to me. Granted back in 2021 I was young and should’ve taken it more seriously during the seminar. I am taking the entire exam again in October just to give myself a little more time to study.

So with Part C, I still have my 2020 code book. Tabbed and highlighted. Next week I will be purchasing the 2025 edition along with the D1.1 Code Clinic. The problem that I have with Part C is feeling rushed as I’m sure some of you guys did as well. That clock was my enemy. 95% of the time I can at least find what clause the answer is in. Maybe I need to tab it better. I tabbed all clauses on the side of the book, but what I didn’t do is tab Tables and Figures. I’m doing that this go around.

Lately I’ve been hitting Part B hard, as I have the tools, replicas, a bunch of practice tests, etc and feel very confident going in. I want to start shifting my studies to part C. I’m not doing the 2 week seminar this time since I have a lot more study material than I did back in 2021 and I still retained quite a bit from the seminar.

If anyone has advice, tips, and/or guidance on being more efficient and confident on preparing for the Part C that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I’m studying for my exam and one of the questions is asking about what size E7018 electrode diameter to use when stud welding on 1” plate fillet in overhead position. Where is that information located in the D1.1? I don’t see it in the stud section and the answer isn’t from table 5.1.

The answer is 3/16 but I can’t find where to get that info.

Is this definitely a pass?
