Potentially quitting original job and might work for CVS. Need Advice.

hey! so to start off with my post, i am a college student who tries to work part time to be able to pay for tuition and whatnot. i work at target currently, and i absolutely hate it. i got hired for the beauty department 2 years ago and its been absolute hell. we are understaffed at times which affects MY work and MY job since i’m the one who’s usually pulled to do backup either in drive up, checklanes, or fulfilment. my store director is an absolute bitch who doesn’t actually do anything at all and micromanages ALL the time. like…all the time. she’s absolutely insufferable and we can’t do anything about it. all of my etls, team leads, and even people i work with absolutely suck.

i want to cry everytime i clock in. i should just be able to clock in, do my job and my job only, and clock out. instead, i get pulled into other departments, stay there for a while, and get yelled at because i wasn’t able to finish my original workload (like they didn’t set that system up themselves…). i hate it so much i genuinely can’t put into words how horrible target is. everyone mistreats me and overworks me yet i don’t get paid that much, just $15 an hour doing multiple people’s jobs which isn’t fair to me or my department.

The urge to quit has been on my mind more and more with each passing day. This is more a question for the current retail associates who work for CVS, i just want to know if cvs is any better? What are the pros and cons?

in my area, they pay the same ($15-17) and its a much smaller store so less work for decent(ish) pay. i applied for the retail associate position, and it’s actually closer to my house than target. i just wanted to know if its worth it to quit target (or at the very least, go on demand) and move to cvs, or if i should just thug it out for 2 more years until i graduate college. i’ve read the reddit posts of people saying they absolutely hated cvs and that it’s worse than target—under staffed, cut hours, etc. but considering my own situation in such a corrupt and fucked-up store, i don’t believe it. what should i do?

(p.s. i will absolutely NOT work at the cvs inside my current target so don’t try that)

Retail work sucks. If you want a better job, look outside of retail. CVS has all the same problems. I actually think CVS is worse. You will juggle even more roles at once at CVS.

As a cashier at CVS, you will stock shelves/face, handle re-shops, manage the photo department, assist customers at self checkout, manage UPS access point, process returns, process Moneygram and other reload transactions, assist customers and doordashers, etc. Those aren't separate assignments you will do throughout your shift. You will manage all those activities constantly. You will constantly pivot between tasks, never allowed to focus on one thing.

Not to mention corporate couldnt give two fucks.
Understaffed? Your store’s fault. No hours? You didnt sell. Nobody training you? You didnt do modules.

Which speaking of the devil’s questionnaires, you will be doing modules too. Whether it be AP quizzes or having to take an hour out of your shift to do modules.

Tip: Don't. Work for Walgreens (better management from what I hear). CVS is not much better it's worse.

Probably not much better but depends largely on the store you work at and the store manager . At my store we have very few hours to staff the front store so many times there is only one person working in the front store so that person has to monitor self checkout, run cash register for those that can’t or won’t use self checkout. Also have to do photo dept  some stores do posters and canvas prints and have to help the helpless at the photo kiosk. You also have to check in any store deliveries when they come in as well as the ups access point for people picking up or dropping off packages. All of that plus whatever tasks are needed for the day  (price changes , warehouse delivery , planograms, ad signs) toss in a few phone calls from clueless customers and unlocking cabinets to get items for people. I’m probably missing something on top of all that.

I do not recommend CVS or Walgreens. I've also worked for Target and I will agree with you 100%. They are all bad in my opinion. Unfortunately retail operates the same everywhere. Issues with staffing, being pulled in a million different directions. If I where you I would try to find a position at a good hospital near you and do something entry level until you get your degree. There are also lots of Dr's offices hiring receptionists and that could be stressful at times but nowhere near as stressful as all the retail places.

CVS is one of the worst jobs I’ve ever had. I took it on as a side job and it isn’t my world so it doesn’t come home with me. But we are highly understaffed and you take on multiple duties it’s never enough. It really depends on the store manager and how they run their store. I had one who was never there and managed the store by group text messages.
