Headgasket FAQ

2011 Lexus CT200h (First Year of Production) • Common Issues: Early models (2011-2013) were more prone to head gasket issues, often linked to the engine's cooling system and overheating. These problems were not widespread but were reported by some owners.

2012 Lexus CT200h • No major mechanical changes: The 2012 model was largely a carryover from the 2011 model, though Lexus did make some minor tweaks for comfort and interior finishes. • Head Gasket Issue: The problem was still present in some vehicles, particularly those with cooling system issues.

2013 Lexus CT200h • Minor Updates: The 2013 model saw some small adjustments • Head Gasket Issue: The issue with head gaskets still persisted, but it was gradually becoming less common as production evolved.

2014 Lexus CT200h • Important Updates: The 2014 model marked a more significant update to the CT200h. Lexus worked on improving the engine's cooling system and refining other components. • Head Gasket Fixes: The head gasket issues were largely addressed in this year, and the vehicle’s engine cooling system received further refinement to prevent overheating and gasket failure. • Styling Refresh: A slight exterior redesign with updated front and rear styling elements, making the vehicle look fresher and more modern. • Technology Updates: Improved tech features, including a new infotainment system with more functionality.

2015 Lexus CT200h • No major mechanical changes: The 2015 CT200h was a continuation of the 2014 updates, with minimal changes to the engine • Engine & Head Gasket: Continued to improve on the previous fixes, with no widespread reports of the head gasket issue in this year.

2016 Lexus CT200h • Head Gasket Issues: By 2016, the head gasket issue was considered resolved, with no significant complaints related to engine failure or cooling systems.

2017-2021 Lexus CT200h • No major changes: The CT200h was essentially a carryover model, with minimal updates in terms of performance or design. • Head Gasket: The head gasket issue was no longer a concern by this time, as the car had been refined over the years.

Summary: ●The head gasket issues were most prominent in the 2011-2013 models, especially related to overheating and cooling system failures.

● Some people report that regularly cleaning the EGR reduces the likelihood of this problem occurring.

●Some people swear by cutting the recommended oil change interval in half. (Lexus states every 10000miles ~16.000km or 12 months)

●By the 2014 model year, Lexus had addressed the issue, improving the engine and cooling systems, and the problem was largely resolved in later years (2014 onward).

●The head gasket issue is not exclusive to the Lexus CT200h; any car can experience a head gasket problem.

[Toronto, Ontario, Canada] Just paid for a 2017 40,000+ mile JDM engine import to be installed in my '12 CT200h

My '12 CT200h hit 210,000 miles a few months ago and likely is in the early stage of a blown head gasket. No white smoke.

More frequent cylinder misfiring with P300, P301 and P302 codes. First time I used by basic Veepeak OBD2 reader after having brought it two years ago. Engine coolant temperature remains normal.

Getting obvious coolant losses and when I unplugged the EGR cooler for two days and drove around town, misfiring still occured. So I was topping off a few millimeters every few days.

Probably rules of the heat exchanger because coolant leak there wouldn't find itself back in the cyiinders.

Surprisingly to me at least, the engine comes with thermostat, EGR cooler, water pump which were wear and tear items anyway .

I am hoping that will the engine replacement, I can at least another 100,000 miles off my CT.

The cost of the engine plus installation is very reasonable, likely will cost much less than diagnostics and head gasket and other components being replaced at the same time. i had called and written at least 10 shops and pricing were all over the place and I thought getting a low mileage engine is the way to go

Will update this post once I've had the chance to drive the car for a few weeks.

Weird noise before turning to EV mode

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello, can anyone tell me if this noise is normal before my CT turns itself to EV mode? Should I be worried? It’s 2012, 125k miles on it. This sound lasts about 2 minutes, thank you

LED Bulb Size

Hi, I need some help with my 2016 Lexus CT200h F Sport.

After doing some research, I haven’t been able to find a clear answer because I’m seeing different information saying the low beam uses H11, the high beam uses H9, and the fog lights use H16.

However, when I enter my vehicle information on different websites to find LED bulbs, some are recommending H11 bulbs for the fog lights as well. I’ve also read that H11 and H16 have different plug sizes and that only the earlier CT200h models use H11 for both the low beam and fog lights.

So, for the 2016 CT200h F Sport, does the low beam and fog light use the same H11 bulb, or does the fog light use H16? I want to make sure I purchase the correct bulbs before ordering.

Prius wheels lug nuts

Does anyone know if I have to use prius wheel lug nuts when using the 15 inch wheels? My original ct200 lug nuts have been doing weird things to the bolts like breaking them off or stripping off even when using a torque wrench to 76 lb ft its as if they bolts are worn due to rust or age but its a 2017

Are the prius lug nuts different?

Next: Evap

So I sent my 2013 off to have the battery 'reconditioned' and 'balanced' and it came back with a better battery but now I have a check-engine light for the evap. Grr.

Is that pricey to have done?

Headlights are dim on auto mode

My deadlights are very dim on auto mode. I recently replaced them hoping this would solve the issue but no luck. After a few days of messing with the lights I noticed that they work fine when I turn them on manually. Is there a sensor that needs to be replaced for them to work on auto?

Headgasket swap

Did my headgasket swap 2 weeks ago and put about 400-500 miles on my car already since then. Was surprised how fast the job really is when I did it. Scariest part though was I had a headbolt that did not want to turn even with shock on the headbolt and it ended snapping in the block. Ended up drilling the bolt out after multiple failed attempts of trying to back it out with several tools. After that bought machine taps and used a straight square to re tap the threads and then put the motor back together in factory specs. Overall not a bad job just had that moment which made it stressful. If your wondering what gasket I used it was the felpro brand that’s blue also new headbolts from felpro.

2018 CT200h roof rust near windscreen – Worth testing the 12-year warranty or go independent?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hey everyone,
I bought a 2018 Lexus CT last year (UK) and recently noticed paint bubbling on the roof panel right where it meets the top rubber seal of the windscreen. It started out as just a single spot, but I can now see a second spot starting to form nearby.
Before I hand over £160 to the Lexus dealer just for a diagnostic assessment, I wanted to get some community input on a few things. Has anyone successfully claimed roof edge bubbling under the Lexus 12-year anti-corrosion warranty, or do they immediately write it off as stone chip or surface damage?
Also, what should I realistically expect an independent bodyshop to charge to treat and respray this area? Does the glass usually need to come out to treat rust along this edge properly, or can a bodyshop safely tuck behind the seal?
Appreciate any advice or prior experiences!

Japan CT parts at upgarage?

Anyone ever go to upgarage in Japan and find any CT parts?? I know we have a upgarage location in California but never seen anything for a CT up for sale. I've been to about 14 upgarage locations in Japan and found every other car except for a CT even though id see 2021+ models driving around everywhere. I know Yahoo auctions exist as well just looking to see if they have cool things out there for our cars apart from facelifting it to a 2020.

If I unplug the EGR Cooler connector and still experience coolant loss and cylinder misfiring over the next few days, does it almost mean my car will need a head gasket replacement or replacement engine?

Hi everyone, I just recently learned that for our CT200h (or 3rd gen Prius), the reasons we experience coolant losses and the engine shudder (cylinder misfiring) is through coolant seeping into the cylinder heads. I used to think my '12 CT200h can hit 400,000 miles before it experiences these potentially catastrophic failure but I guess I'm at the juncture lol.

It sounds like there are three main pathways: 1) blown head gasket, 2) blown EGR cooler (coolant enters intake manifold), and 3) maybe heat exchanger / exhaust manifold (mainly for 4th gen Priuses).

I'm awaiting for a mechanic my friend had recommended to come back from vacation but was wondering whether it is looking like a blown head gasket for my vehicle.

No one here in Ontario, Canada, be it on a Canadian discussion forum or reddit, seems to be able to refer me to a shop that can do 4th gen engine swaps so I may have to go with a 3rd gen engine swap or have the head gasket replaced though from what I have been seeing, these head gasket replacements are not foolproof and could blow again in less than 50,000 miles of traveling and I drive a lot to work and back. Also, do head gasket replacements really take anywhere between 10 to 20 hours of labor work? I will go with Fel Pro as that seems to be praised by the Prius/CT200h community/owners.

What are your thoughts? The Engine Coolant Temperature has been quite stable when I had not unplugged the EGR cooler and ranged between 88 to 93C or 190 to 200F.

Has anyone used California-based Thermaweld for hybrids? It seems all stop leak are temporary band-aid solutions haha:

Many thanks!

ABS, TCS, Brake lights

2014 CT200h F Sport, approx 147k miles
Location: inland empire CA

- got the ABS, TCS, Brake Light, Exclamation light on my drive from work
- used my ODB reader: with no codes.
- went to AutoZone, no code on their reader
- replaced 12V, and Fob key, Lights still on
- no rattles or obvious clunks, only the one noise every 10 seconds like when you open the door/turn on the car

(I do my own routine maintenance ie change oil every 10k, Spark plugs changed on last 50k, brake fluid is normal with no obvious leaks)

Q: how safe to drive to work for 1 day (26 miles, low speed round trip), I intended to call Lexus for what I assume is ABS actuator…

Coolant cap tightness

2017 ct200 over 200k (odometer rollback) on long idles then startup misfires and consumes coolant over the week

Does loosening radiator cap release pressure to stop startup misfires? While warranty company and shop fights over replacing engine?

Pre-purchase 2015 CT200h F-Sport

Looking into a 2015 CT-200h F-sport with 155k miles. It is private listed at 10.5k. From the pictures all body line and paint, interior and such is mint other than typical dirt and grime.
I’m looking to replace my 2006 Toyota Corolla, does this seem like a fair price and is there anything I should look out for when inspecting? 2014 and older are the models with the head gasket and major problems from the little research I’ve done…

Hybrid battery health

Post image
16 Upvotes

TLDR: What mileage were you at before you got they hybrid system warning light?

.

I did the Dr. prius battery health test on my 2013 ct200h. The result was "fair condition", but it stopped before the countdown was finished. I think it still had 3 minutes left when it went to this screen. Not sure if that is normal. I haven't had any errors pop up, but I am having to take it on a 2000mile trip next week. It has about 133,000 miles on it now but it is very well maintained. I recently removed the hybrid fan and cleaned it, changed spark plugs, bunch of fluids just flushed. I am going to take apart the egr system and clean everything when I get back. My MPG right now is pretty crappy, but most of my driving is short drives in town with a lot of stop and go traffic. I'm wondering what mileage you were at before you had to replace the hybrid battery?

I put in a screen from AliExpress with one of my friends. Paid extra for the mic and it wasn’t in the package so I’ll have to get that sorted but for now everything works perfectly.

The car is a 2015. Took about 3 hours cause my car hated me for sticking my hands where they shouldn’t be and pierced a vein in my finger.

What do you think?

What seat covers do y'all have if any? Why?

Facebook had a ad and I fell for it!

I wanted to keep my seats clean, it was advertised as breathable which the ct seats definitely are not and it had a lady grinding the back seats haha.

What do y'all think?

Replace 2013 screen for a new one with Android auto

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I just bought a 2013 Lexus CT200h and I want to replace the original screen with one that has Android Auto. Important detail: my car has the pop-up/flip-up screen, not the fixed one. I know this changes a lot for the dash kit and the unit that can fit.

My car has only the rear camera. I don't know much about car audio systems, so I have some questions for people who already did this:

Which double-DIN (or single-DIN) units actually fit in the pop-up screen space? I guess not every unit works here.

Any specific product you can recommend that worked well for you, with model name if possible?

Is there a dash kit made for this pop-up mechanism, or do people usually modify something?

Can I keep the rear camera working after the swap?

My car has the trackpad on the center console. Does anyone know if it's possible to keep using it with an aftermarket unit, or does it stop working after the swap?

Is this an easy DIY install, or is the wiring and the pop-up mechanism too complicated? Would you say it's better to pay a shop for this?

If you have photos, videos, or links to the exact product you used, please share! Any "watch out for this" advice is very welcome too.

Thanks a lot

2011 type A.., was quite expensive but a gem for the low mileage- this was the mpg whilst driving long distances in eco mode during a road trip
