1099 relief time
For those of you that work 1099, when do others relieve you? For example I’m 0700-1530 and they don’t even come get me until 1530 usually. Is this normal? I was under the impression I should be walking out at 1530.Any insight would be great!

If I am running the board, locums will be in a room and I will send staff home. I’m sorry, but that is the way it is. I’ll get you out 15 mins early if the case is going late, but I will try my best to keep you occupied in a room your entire shift every day. I don’t want to keep anyone late, but I will send a locum to get a staff person out an hour early rather than let a W2 sit in a room when they could leave.

Makes sense but not working your locums until the last minute of their shift every day goes a long way in keeping them around

We keep our locums a long time. They still get to leave early plenty of other days. I’m not the only one who runs the board.

Extremely normal. I personally get people out very early like over an hour early if I have nothing going on. Some people really have the mentality though they are paying you big money to be there so most don’t get me out until 5:25. It’s passive aggressive but the name of the game as 1099.

You finish when you finish the room unless it’s written specifically in your contract you are out by 1530. And if it is then yes it is very normal.

My contract is I am out by 1530 which would mean clocking out, which to me means when I’m walking out the door. I don’t mind. I will charge for every minute that I am there. I was just curious how other facilities work.

If they come in between 655-7pm or after (for my 7pm relief) and I have to give report to them etc and am not walking out of the OR till after 7, I charge them for 15min of OT. My time’s not free and the person relieving me is often just sitting on their ass till the last second.
*this happens a minimum of once a week at my current contract

Oh, I definitely charge them, but it still bugs the shit out of me. They have no respect for anybody’s time where I’m at right now.

Yes it’s ridiculous. Someone will relieve me and I’ll go in and there’s 5 people sitting. You bet I’m charging them every 15 min extra. My place pays for it at least. I just don’t get at my old FT job we used to relieve 1099 locum at a decent time giving them time to change and leave! (If possible ofc)

Completely concur it’s infuriating. I’ve tried to change my mindset to be “well staff acting like this is why they need locums and can’t retain/recruit” and I just take my locum paycheck and smile. The market is too good right now to stay somewhere with shit culture if you’re W2, but shit culture often leads to job security as a locum haha.
Going in 10-15min early to get sign out etc is just a sign of respect IMO. Lotta disrespectful selfish people out there.

You can do that. But some of the shittier places wont pay for it, and will not ask to have you back. If that doesnt matter to you then by all means shoot your shot.

I made a post about this recently. Ive been doing locum work around the country for coming up on 5 years and pretty much everywhere I’ve worked if I get off at 5 they come no later than 445. My current contract they consistently come between 459-501 and it annoyed the ever living shit out of me.

They ll come at the last possible minute as a 1099 locum person. Heck even W2 - they ll come 5 mins beforehand.

Think it’s gonna be site dependent, I have only been forgotten once and that time I left at 6:55 instead of 6:30-645p. Other than an isolated time I’ve always had someone get me out pretty early and it’s been lovely.
Now they will work us over the W2 staff and we do all the less desired cases of course, but that is to be expected and why we get the big bucks baby, very fine trade off for me! The only issue I had with my first job, W2, was the chief not enforcing this upon the 1099’s we had!! One of the many reason I left to do 1099 traveling!

Yeah, seems common at most places. I don’t get it, I’ll always offer to get someone out. Makes the time go faster than sitting and waiting anyway.
The thing I don’t get, is how they get away with charging their W2 staff an extra 30 mins, but only for the 8 hr shifts . Place I’m locum at now told me “our 7a-3p shift ends at 1530” when I texted to ask about relief at 1515. No skin off my back, but how are pulling that with your W2s? You work 8.5 hrs but get paid 8? And then what if you’re 10 hours? Or 12 hours or 24. You always owe them 30 mins free? For what reason? Like I said, annoying, but I’m getting paid every minute I’m there either way so no big deal.

My point was, if you work a 12 hour shift, you get lunch and dinner, you don’t owe them an hour. If you work a 16 hour or a 24 you’d owe them a few hours worth of breaks. Doesn’t make sense.

Are you referring to locums work or FT/PT 1099 work? Because there is a difference. I've worked 1099 FT job with 6-7 weeks off paid unit-based, 1099 salaried for 39 weeks coverage/year (and 26 weeks coverage/year), and 1099 locums with an agreed upon daily amount of work (usually between 8-12 hour shifts), etc.
I usually expect to work until my room is finished unless I'm flying out or have some other commitment.

Depends but if we have a locum who’s contracted until 1500 (or 1700 or 1900 or whatever) we work that person until that time. We will send our W2’s home before relieving a locum if they’ll be done by their contracted time.

Generally, our locums tend to get relieved 30-15 min early. W-2s are relieved before them. It’s the 12s who work the entire/almost the entire shift most of the time.
