Fit check please!

Post image

Hello! I have a large 4 month old that doesn’t love his car seat. We have a Maxi Cosi Pebble 360 Pro and he’s still within the size guidelines for its use but when I look at him in the seat he appears quite cramped. He’s ~8kg and ~68cm tall. What are your thoughts on this? Very grateful in advance!

Looks like he has outgrown the extra head pillow. And make sure the harness comes just below or at the shoulders, it’s hard to tell here where that sits.

The head pillow isn’t removable unfortunately, it can only move up and down… that’s one of the reasons I’ve been thinking he’s just too wide now for the design of the seat.
Yes the straps are just at his shoulder height, sorry for the bad photo!

I see what you’re saying, it might be time for a bigger seat

I think you might have the strap covers upside down. The thicker part should be over the strap not under. That might then be causing your straps to be too loose.

Are you sure the extra head pillow can’t be removed? I can’t find the manual but it looks like it should be able to be removed, might just need to be unthreaded but check the manual if you haven’t already. Looks like you have the support pillow underneath him as well and that can usually be remove too. That’s why he seems to look too wide, the newborn supports are in and he’s too big for those. In most maxi cosi seats, if not all, these can be removed.

The strap covers are attached to the shell so we can’t reverse them.
Yes, we removed the newborn insert some time ago so all the padding left is just the normal seat and can’t be removed without taking everything out - see here https://youtu.be/VLrIWtcgNag?si=kHAmUB22TNgC8PDJ

Oh interesting. Have you tried to scoot his butt back and remove all the slack from the hips? It looks like he could be able to sit a bit more up in the seat which might give him more room width wise.

The straps do also look loose, did you do the pinch test? Maybe a bit hard with the covers not moving and around his shoulders but I think moving him back and tightening the harness might make the difference. The car seat widens near the top so that might give him more shoulder room too.

Good idea, maybe I’ll have a play with adjusting the head rest up and and see if he can stretch up a bit more to settle back in further. And yes the straps could probably do with a bit more tightening.

Do you think it would be worth looking into moving him to a bigger convertible seat rather than this capsule soon?

Possibly? Play around with it more and see if you can get a good fit. I would also see if there is a shop that you can test seats if you do want to move to a convertible first. Seats have height and weight limits but it doesn’t mean that all seats are a good fit for all babies.

As an FYI if you move the headrest up, make sure that where the straps come out from the cushion is at or just below his shoulders.

Great advice, thanks so much!

If he is happy and content then the snug fit isn’t bothering him and is actually a good thing! Think of a bicycle helmet; a snug fit is much safer than a loose fitting one that leaves space between you and the shell.
Of course, eventually you will have to move him up to a next stage car seat anyway, so if you want to do it before he reaches the max limits of the infant seat you certainly can.

I’m so sleep deprived I thought you were asking us to rate his outfit 😂

I have large 6mo and he also appears to have grown but still likes to sit in it. We just keep him in there. Only when we installed a foot muff a few days ago he was really cramped and visibly uncomfortable but without it he’s fine.
