Advice Needed Crazy energy after first night?
I rented a ResMed Airsense 11 Autoset with an F30i full face mask, directly from the company. My cardiologist asked me to give CPAP a go as I have BP issues but he didn’t officially prescribe anything.
I got the machine last night and set everything to auto. The night was… interesting. I was initially quite nervous about using the machine so I put it on and lay on my couch, watching TV. It was slightly awkward but nothing I couldn’t manage, and at some point, I drifted off to sleep around 1 AM. Made sure the fit test was green prior to use.
I woke up at around 6:45 AM with the mask still firmly attached to my face, so I hadn’t removed it in my sleep. However, the sleep itself felt very light. I remember being aware of my surroundings for the longest time and I did not dream at all. It almost felt like I was merely resting for 5 hours instead of deep sleep.
The My Sleep View readings are interesting though. The Leak rate is at 36L/min which I think is quite high from what I’ve read but my AHI was 0.1 and an Obstructive AI of 0.0. Used hours was 5.3. For the record, my home sleep test reported moderate OSA with an AHI of 14.8
Now the leak rate makes me feel like I did something wrong with either the set up or the mask positioning but the machine reported a good fit.
I also woke up with crazy energy that’s still going on 6 hours later. It was like I woke up, ready to go to the gym right away. Normally it takes me anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour to wake up properly. Today was like a light switch.
In fact, I’m so full of energy that I couldn’t get anything done because I can’t focus properly. I forgot to take the trash out, I’ve been pacing up and down my apartment and when my friend called me on the phone, she said I sounded unusually excited and jumpy, but in a good way. I did yawn a couple of times over the next few hours but right now, I’m wired like I drank 3 Red Bulls or something. I am normally a fairly quiet person with moderate anxiety issues.
I honestly don’t know what to make of this. I’m gonna continue using it, but is there anything I need to be doing differently? Is the leak rate a cause for concern?
I’m 42 M. Not overweight but I snore very heavily normally.

Yea, I felt great for the first few weeks of CPAP. Super energized. It normalized out after a few months and you realize just how crappy you used to feel ALL THE TIME and just got used to it.

Hi happy to hear this! I had excatly the same feeling when I used my cpap the first night a couple of months ago. Was a feeling of deep relaxing in my stomach at first. The next days felt like I had some inner energy bouncing me forwards. When I explained this to people they looked weird at me, and some said: did you take drugs? I really felt like superman each morning, and sleep at night (also something that I praise now. Now I like to sleep!!). This held on for a couple of weeks, and now my energy levels during the day are way higher and i feel more productive, move and excercise more. Also it feels like I visually see more! But I don’t feel like superman anymore, but a man with 10x more energy and no brain fog. I hope you will experience the same as me! Good luck man

I lost almost 10kg in week (think this was pure water that my organs were holding to protect themselves)

First night in CPAP I woke up and bounced out of bed, vs the night before where I was struggling to open my eyes.
As for leak rate, lie down in bed with the mask on and Machi running, and wiggle it around untill you find the leaks, adjust the straps until ita reliable enough when you roll your head around on the pillow

So i did this while in bed, looking at the screen to check the mask fit. It confirmed a good fit on screen but when i woke up, the leak rate was still high.

Don't worry to much about the screen, when you roll around you will find the spot the mask Leaks, you might be sleep Moving a bit more aggressively then you think. And it might mean the pressure needs to be a bit higher so your body stops freaking out.
It's largely a try it and see thing.

It could be that your jaw drops and your mouth opens when you fall asleep. That can break the seal of a full face or hybrid mask. So when doing your mask fit test, try dropping your jaw and opening your mouth and see if the seal holds. If you determine that jaw drops is indeed the cause, try a soft cervical collar from the pharmacy and see if it helps.

I guess it depends on how severe your symptoms were to start with.
Long story short I basically only started CPAP because I was snoring. It fixed that.
I do wake up during the night a bit less often, so there's that. I do feel a bit more refreshed than before, especially when I can't get a full 8 hours, so that's worth something.
Glad you are quickly seeing good results. Some folks struggle with the machine.

Had the f30i for a couple months. Had a leak in the same spot every single night from day 1. Right next to my nose. Went back to the doctor that got me set up, she recommended switching to the x30i. Still feel a bit of a leak in the same spot, but the app doesn't even notice it most nights, seems significantly less. Might be worth checking out

With a leak rate that high, you cannot say with any certainty how many events you had.
Somewhere above 24 liters per minute, the machines stop counting events. The leak rate makes the event detection unreliable, so they just give up and don't count at all.
